Dieses Buch ist im Laufe von 20 Jahren höchst erfreulich gewachsen, ohne aufgedunsen zu wirken - vom Taschenbuch (BA 5/89) zu einem in doppelter Hinsicht gewichtigen Großband von 1.127 Seiten. Stark erweitert und aktualisiert (nur ein Drittel des Textes blieb unverändert), bietet die sachkundige, kritische und materialreiche, dabei gut lesbare Darstellung umfassende Informationen zur Entwicklung und Typologie des Kriminalroman. Behandelt werden auch Polit- und Verschwörungsthriller, und obwohl die angelsächsische Szene, vor allem mit den "hartgesottenen Amerikanern" den Schwerpunkt bildet, gibt es Kapitel wie "abseits der angelsächsischen Hauptstraße" und "aus deutschen Landen" ("eine erstaunliche Blüte"). Ausführliche Literaturhinweise; Namensregister sowie Register der Original- und Übersetzungstitel machen das Werk, dessen "kleiner" Vorläufer zu ersetzen ist, auch für Auskunftsbestände unentbehrlich.
