Christine Viertmann leistet eine interdisziplinäre Analyse des Sündenbock-Phänomens im Kontext der Medienberichterstattung über die ehemaligen CEOs Josef Ackermann (Deutsche Bank), Werner Seifert (Deutsche Börse) und Hartmut Mehdorn (Deutsche Bahn). Die Untersuchung zeigt, wie und warum Vorstandsvorsitzende nationaler Traditionsunternehmen zu Projektionsflächen gesellschaftlicher Konflikte werden können. Der Sündenbock-Mechanismus ist eine unumgängliche, komplexitätsreduzierende Lösungsstrategie für gesellschaftliche Problemstellungen. Anhand der drei Fallstudien werden Medientexte und -bilder auf Elemente einer Sündenbock-Erzählung hin untersucht. Darüber hinaus wird in Experteninterviews mit Journalisten und Unternehmensvertretern über die Bedeutung des Sündenbocks in der öffentlichen Kommunikation diskutiert. Das Ergebnis: Wirtschaftsjournalismus ist mythisch. Topmanagern werden nicht selten Eigenschaften zugeschrieben, die archaischen Opfermerkmalen entsprechen.
