Aristoteles ist angebl. Verfasser. Nach R. Walzer (in Encycl. of Islam, Bd. 1, S. 633): "based on a probably Greek paraphrase of sections of Plotinus". Nach G. Graf (Gesch. der christlichen arabischen Literatur, Bd. 2, S. 228, teilw. in Anlehnung an Paul Henry) geht das vorliegende Werk als Vorlesungsmitschrift auf einen Schüler Plotins, möglicherweise Amelius, zurück und deckt sich teilweise mit Gedankengut des in der Einleitung der Übersetzung genannten Porphyrius. Es wurde dann zu unbekannter Zeit ins Syrische, aus dem Syrischen von ʿAbd-al-Masīḥ Ibn-ʿAbdallāh Ibn-Nāʿima al-Ḥimṣī ins Arabische übersetzt, von Yaʿqūb Ibn-Isḥāq al-Kindī überarbeitet und dann fälschlich Aristoteles zugeschrieben.
