Und dies ist kein Zufall: Offensichtlich wird uns - angesichts von Umweltzerstörung, individuell-existentieller Krisenerfahrung etc. - jenes An­ dere, Kreatürlich-Animalische, nur scheinbar Verläßliche des menschlichen Selbst wieder bewußt, das zu verstehen dem westeuropäischen Menschen mit fortschreitender Zivilisation, gesellschaftlicher Verunsicherung und rapidem sozialem Wandel sukzessive abhanden gekommen ist. In diesem Sinne ist beispielsweise Günter Grass' kritischer Blick auf die Konsequenzen der Aufklärung zu verstehen, dessen Bestandsaufnahme in den achtziger Jahren unserem Jahrhundert nur mehr Fortschrittswahn attestiert und der Rückbesinnung des Menschen auf Natur und Kreatur, jener anderen Seite der Vernunft, in zahlreichen Essays, politischen Reden und schließlich mit seinem apokalyptischen Buch Die Rättin (1986) entschieden das Wort redet. Auf die schwindende Zukunftsgewißheit der Menschheit thematisch wie ästhetisch zu reagieren, so konstatierte Grass bereits 1982 in seiner Rede zur Verleihung des Internationalen Antonio-Feltrinelli-Preises in Rom, sei nicht zuletzt Aufgabe der Schriftsteller: Doch weiß ich, daß jenes Buch, das zu schreiben ich vorhabe, nicht mehr so tun kann, als sei ihm Zukunft sicher. Der Abschied von den beschädigten Dingen, von der verletzten Kreatur, von uns und unseren Köpfen, die sich alles und auch das Ende all dessen ausgedacht haben, müßte mitgeschrieben werden.
