Content: Gesellschaftliche Emanzipation prägte als gemeinsames Anliegen in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts die Arbeiterbewegung und das europäische Judentum. Die emanzipatorischen Bestrebungen jüdischer Intellektueller und politischer Aktivistinnen und Aktivisten gegen gesellschaftliche Diskriminierung auf der einen und der Arbeiterbewegung für eine Veränderung der sozialen Verhältnisse auf der anderen Seite gerieten mitunter in Konflikt. Mit den Zäsuren des 20. Jahrhunderts – dem Ersten Weltkrieg, der Oktoberrevolution, dem Scheitern der Weimarer Republik, dem Volksfrontansatz sowie der antisemitischen Vernichtungspolitik des nationalsozialistischen Deutschlands – musste nicht nur das Verhältnis von Judentum und Arbeiterbewegung zueinander, sondern damit einhergehend auch die Spannungs- sowie die gemeinsamen Aktionsfelder neu ausgehandelt werden. Das Streben nach Emanzipation unterlag dementsprechend einem permanenten historischen Wandel und benötigte jeweils neue Strategien. Die internationale Tagung beinhaltet folgende Fragenkomplexe: - Wurde das Streben nach Emanzipation als ein gemeinsames Anliegen verstanden, das Juden und Jüdinnen mit der Arbeiterbewegung verband? - Dominierten Identitätskonstruktionen und Selbstbilder, die zu einer Entscheidung zwangen, sich selbst primär als Juden bzw. Jüdinnen oder als Angehörige der internationalen Arbeiterbewegung zu verstehen? - Welche Rolle spielte Yiddishkayt in der Arbeiterbewegung? - Wie reagierte die Arbeiterbewegung auf den erstarkenden Antisemitismus? Eine Veranstaltung des Ludwig Rosenberg Kollegs und des gemeinsam vom Moses Mendelssohn Zentrum für europäisch-jüdische Studien und der Hans-Böckler-Stiftung eingerichteten Promotionskollegs, das sich den historischen Bezügen zwischen Judentum und Arbeiterbewegung in der Moderne widmet. In Kooperation mit der W. Michael Blumenthal Akademie des Jüdischen Museums Berlin, gefördert durch die Ernst-Reuter-Gesellschaft der Freien Universität Berlin und die Moses Mendelssohn Stiftung.
