Hillman (2003), 'Board Composition from Adolescence to Maturity: A Multitheoretic View', Academy of Management Review, 28 (3), July, 416-31 , The analysis of corporate governance in small and medium-sized firms has been a much-neglected aspect of study in the field of corporate governance. This essential research review provides an authoritative overview of research in this topical field by successfully linking classical papers on corporate governance to the specific aspects in SMEs. The purpose of this book is not only to provide a review of the literature on governance in SMEs, but also from other social sciences and management perspectives. This title will be of great interest not only to lecturers and students interested in corporate governance but also to managers and policy makers

The chapters are well-chosen and are written by respected authors with international profiles. The book will be highly valued as a reference work, by research economists and practitioners, as well as by postgraduate students and professors at universities where distributional measurement theory and application is dealt with at the PhD level.'--Peter Lambert, University of Oregon, US. The very meaning of economic inequality is fundamental for understanding today's policy debates over issues such as interpreting changes in income inequality over time, across countries, or between groups within a society, as well as determining whether or not society is becoming more polarized with a shrinking middle class. Professor Becker has selected seminal papers covering topics including foundations of income inequality measurement, the social welfare view of inequality and directions for future research on economic inequality. Along with a new and original introduction, this essential single volume is an indispensable tool for scholars and practitioners alike

Series Statement: Studies in musical performance as creative practice volume 5
Content: Until recently, ideas of creativity in music revolved around composers in garrets and the lone genius. But the last decade has witnessed a sea change: musical creativity is now overwhelmingly thought of in terms of collaboration and real-time performance. Music as Creative Practice is a first attempt to synthesize both perspectives. It begins by developing the idea that creativity arises out of social interaction-of which making music together is perhaps the clearest possible illustration-and then shows how the same thinking can be applied to the ostensively solitary practices of composition. The book also emphasizes the contextual dimensions of musical creativity, ranging from the prodigy phenomenon, long-term collaborative relationships within and beyond the family, and creative learning to the copyright system that is supposed to incentivize creativity but is widely seen as inhibiting it. Music as Creative Practice encompasses the classical tradition, jazz and popular music, and music emerges as an arena in which changing concepts of creativity-from the old myths about genius to present-day sociocultural theory-can be traced with particular clarity. The perspective of creativity tells us much about music, but the reverse is also true, and this fifth and last instalment of the Studies in Musical Performance as Creative Practice series offers an approach to musical creativity that is attuned to the practices of both music and everyday life. - Nicholas Cook is Emeritus Professor of Music at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of the British Academy. His book Music: A Very Short Introduction (1998) has been translated into seventeen languages, and his The Schenker Project (2007) won the Society for Music Theory's Wallace Berry Award. His most recent monograph is Beyond the Score: Music as Performance (2013).

Content: "This highly theoretical work of ethnomusicology is a reclamation of Indigenous ceremonial and artistic practice arguing that the inclusion and appropriation of Indigenous performers in classical music traditions only enriches the settler nation-state. Robinson gives shape to Western musical and aesthetic practices as well as to Indigenous listening practices in order to eschew traditional (Western) forms of musical analysis. Instead, the work argues that new modes of listening and studying reception, emerging out of critical Indigenous studies, are essential to understanding Indigenous musical expression in ways that do not reify the power of the settler state"--

Content: Structures are defined by laws of composition, rules of generation, and relations. The objects on which these laws operate may be numbers, geometric objects like points and lines, or abstract symbols. Algebra is the study of mathematical laws, with a search for general principles that do not depend on what the objects are. Fundamental Structures of Algebra and Discrete Mathematics is an introduction to the twelve basic kinds of structures - sets, ordered sets, groups, rings, fields, vector spaces, graphs, lattices, matroids, topological spaces, universal algebras, and categories - that underlie algebra and discrete mathematics. Beginning with the most basic type of structure, sets, this unique reference provides a detailed look at the theoretical underpinning of each structure, shedding light on the significance of each structure as well as their interrelation
Content: Using a self-contained approach that requires little previous knowledge of mathematical definitions, results, or methods, the book examines selected key aspects of these structures, including closure systems, generators, substructures, homomorphisms and congruences, equational axioms, connections with basic set theory, finiteness conditions, combinatorial properties, and discrete algorithmic procedures. Several classical results are proved, including the Abel-Ruffini theorem on unsolvability by radicals, Helly's theorem on intersecting convex sets, and a simplified version of the Godel-Herbrand completeness theorem. Many of the results are relevant to current research. Highly interactive in approach, the book features numerous exercises and examples woven throughout the text that allow the reader to become fully acquainted with the character and function of each structure. Additional questions, designed to stretch the reader's analytical skills, appear at the end of each section
Content: Similar to a grammar book that explains the fundamental structures essential to mastering a language, Fundamental Structures of Algebra and Discrete Mathematics is a systematic examination of the basic algebraic structures needed to understand and manipulate advanced mathematical concepts. A cornerstone reference that is both a clear primer and rigorous study guide, Fundamental Structures of Algebra and Discrete Mathematics is indispensable to the student and professional seeking to learn or use the methods of modern algebra
