Content: "This is a comprehensive history of political violence during Europe's incredibly violent twentieth century. Leading scholars examine the causes and dynamics of war, revolution, counterrevolution, genocide, ethnic cleansing, terrorism and state repression. They locate these manifestations of political violence within their full transnational and comparative contexts and within broader trends in European history from the beginning of the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire in the late nineteenth-century, through the two world wars, to the Yugoslav Wars and the rise of fundamentalist terrorism. The book spans a 'greater Europe' stretching from Ireland and Iberia to the Baltic, the Caucasus, Turkey and the southern shores of the Mediterranean. It sheds new light on the extent to which political violence in twentieth-century Europe was inseparable from the generation of new forms of state power and their projection into other societies, be they distant territories of imperial conquest or ones much closer to home"--

Content: "The study of Renaissance drawings allows for an intensive exploration of how artists constructed their works and how they thought, often by revealing the artists' ideas through the examination of private images that were deemed inappropriate for more public viewing. Rethinking Renaissance Drawings presents new and original research from art historians and curators from leading universities and museums across North America and Europe. Previous studies on drawings tend to focus on the work of one artist or a small regional group of artists. The essays in this collection address larger issues of the forms and functions of drawing in the Renaissance by exploring a variety of perspectives, including discussions of the process of drawing, the often unorthodox imagery of Renaissance drawings, the collecting and copying of Renaissance drawings, and the works of artists such as Michelangelo, Raphael, Bosch, Parmigianino, Annibale Carracci, Guercino, and Rembrandt. Some of the drawings discussed are exciting new discoveries, published here for the first time, whereas others are familiar works, but shown in a new light. Collectively, these studies offer alternate views of Renaissance art and show more intimate aspects of a period that is often remembered for its paintings and large-scale public monuments."--

Content: A free open access ebook is available upon publication. Learn more at www.luminosoa.org. Situated at the disciplinary boundary between prehistory and history, this book presents a new synthesis of Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age Greece, from the rise and fall of Mycenaean civilization, through the "Dark Age," and up to the emergence of city-states in the Archaic period. This period saw the growth and decline of varied political systems and the development of networks that would eventually expand to nearly all shores of the Middle Sea. Alex R. Knodell argues that in order to understand how ancient Greece changed over time, one must analyze how Greek societies constituted and reconstituted themselves across multiple scales, from the local to the regional to the Mediterranean. Knodell employs innovative network and spatial analyses to understand the regional diversity and connectivity that drove the growth of early Greek polities. As a groundbreaking study of landscape, interaction, and sociopolitical change, Societies in Transition in Early Greece systematically bridges the divide between the Mycenaean period and the Archaic Greek world to shed new light on an often-overlooked period of world history

Content: Scope and content: "While Amundsen, Franklin, and Peary were first to explore the furthest geographical reaches of the Polar North, Knud Rasmussen was the first to explore its culture and its soul. Part Danish, part Inuit, the famed explorer anthropologist made an epic three year journey by dog sled from Greenland to Alaska recording not only the landscapes but also the songs and stories of the Eskimo people. In the ranks of the great explorer/writers who opened hitherto impenetrable cultures to the West--T.E. Lawrence in the Mideast, Wilfred Thesiger among the Bedouin, Richard Burton in Africa or among the Sufi--Rasmussen stars not only for his physical courage and ability to assimilate into the life of indigenous peoples, but also for the beauty of his writing. Across Arctic America and his collection of Eskimo songs and stories are classics of Polar literature. There has been no full-scale biography of Rasmussen in English, and Stephen Bown's splendidly received life of Roald Amundsen makes him the perfect writer to record the great journeys and fascinating life of the Inuit from Greenland through the Northwest Passage, to Alaska"
Note: "A Merloyd Lawrence book." , Includes bibliographical references and index , Prologue: "I must go and see the New People" -- Part One. New Sun -- On Greenland's Stony Shores -- The Temptations of Copenhagen -- The Danish Literary Expedition -- Part Two. Content: The multiauthored book accompanying the World on the Horizon exhibition organized by Krannert Art Museum is the first interdisciplinary study of Swahili visual arts and their historically deep and enduring connections to eastern and central Africa, the port towns of the western Indian Ocean, Europe, and the United States. At once exhibition catalogue and scholarly inquiry, the publication features eighteen essays in a mix of formats - personal reflections, object biographies, as well as more in-depth critical treatments - and includes never before published images of works from the National Museums of Kenya and Bait Al Zubair Museum in Oman. By approaching the east African coast as a vibrant arena of global cultural convergence, these essays offer compelling new perspectives on the situated yet mobile and deeply networked social lives of Swahili objects. Moving between the broader structural relations of political economic change to more intimate narratives through which such change is experienced, the essays throw light on the ways in which the material fabric of the arts structure Swahili people's sense of self and community in an ever-changing world of oceanic and terrestrial movement. Exhibition: Krannert Art Museum, Champaign, USA (31.08.2017-24.03.2018)
