Content: This is the third published volume of the proceedings of the Israel Seminar on Geometric Aspects of Functional Analysis. The large majority of the papers in this volume are original research papers. There was last year a strong emphasis on classical finite-dimensional convexity theory and its connection with Banach space theory. In recent years, it has become evident that the notions and results of the local theory of Banach spaces are useful in solving classical questions in convexity theory. The present volume contributes to clarifying this point. In addition this volume contains basic contributions to ergodic theory, invariant subspace theory and qualitative differential geometry.
Note: The invariant subspace problem on a class of nonreflexive Banach spaces, 1 -- Approximational complexity of functions -- Minkowski sums and symmetrizations -- On two theorems of lozanovskii concerning intermediate Banach lattices -- On Milman's inequality and random subspaces which escape through a mesh in ? n -- Isomorphic symmetrization and geometric inequalities -- Dimension, non-linear spectra and width -- Some useful facts about Banach spaces -- Homogeneous Banach spaces -- An approach to pointwise ergodic theorems -- Some remarks on the geometry of convex sets -- On finite dimensional homogeneous Banach spaces -- Vector-valued hausdorff-young inequalities and applications -- Projection bodies -- On a geometric inequality -- A few observations on the connections between local theory and some other fields.

Content: A small conference was held in September 1986 to discuss new applications of elliptic functions and modular forms in algebraic topology, which had led to the introduction of elliptic genera and elliptic cohomology. The resulting papers range, fom these topics through to quantum field theory, with considerable attention to formal groups, homology and cohomology theories, and circle actions on spin manifolds. Ed. Witten's rich article on the index of the Dirac operator in loop space presents a mathematical treatment of his interpretation of elliptic genera in terms of quantum field theory. A short introductory article gives an account of the growth of this area prior to the conference.
Note: Elliptic genera: An introductory overview -- Elliptic formal groups over ? and F p in applications to number theory, computer science and topology -- Elliptic cohomology and modular forms -- Supersingular elliptic curves and congruences for legendre polynomials -- Some weil group representations motivated by algebraic topology -- Genres elliptiques equivariants -- Complex cobordism theory for number theorists -- Dirichlet series and homology theory -- Constrained Hamiltonians an introduction to homological algebra in field theoretical physics -- The index of the dirac operator in loop space -- Jacobi quartics, legendre polynomials and formal groups -- Note on the Landweber-Stong elliptic genus.

Content: The main theme of the meeting was to illustrate the use of stochastic processes in the study of topological problems in quantum physics and statistical mechanics. Much discussion of current problems was generated and there was a considerable amount of interaction between mathematicians and physicists. The papers presented in the proceedings are essentially of a research nature but some (Lewis, Hudson) are introductions or surveys.

Content: The objective of the meeting was to have together leading specialists in the field of Holomorphic Dynamical Systems in order to present their current reseach in the field. The scope was to cover iteration theory of holomorphic mappings (i.e. rational maps), holomorphic differential equations and foliations. Many of the conferences and articles included in the volume contain open problems of current interest. The volume contains only research articles.

Content: This textbook is an introduction to non-standard analysis and to its many applications. Non standard analysis (NSA) is a subject of great research interest both in its own right and as a tool for answering questions in subjects such as functional analysis, probability, mathematical physics and topology. The book arises from a conference held in July 1986 at the University of Hull which was designed to provide both an introduction to the subject through introductory lectures, and surveys of the state of research. The first part of the book is devoted to the introductory lectures and the second part consists of presentations of applications of NSA to dynamical systems, topology, automata and orderings on words, the non- linear Boltzmann equation and integration on non-standard hulls of vector lattices. One of the book's attractions is that a standard notation is used throughout so the underlying theory is easily applied in a number of different settings. Consequently this book will be ideal for graduate students and research mathematicians coming to the subject for the first time and it will provide an attractive and stimulating account of the subject.

Content: This monograph provides a sample of relevant new results on dynamical nonlinear statistical modeling and estimation which forms a basis for more effective signal processing, decision and control. While the research literature is rich in linear Gaussian methodologies, new contributions to the most relevant area of nonlinear and non-Gaussian processes have been scarce. Among the significant areas of application for which such methodologies are needed are: economics, biology, immunology, underwater acoustics, electric power generation, chemical process control, and variable structure systems in general. The latter include adaptive, intelligent, and decomposing mathematical structures or processes. The volume includes ten research papers on theory, computational methods, and applications. Topics include filtering with application to inertial navigation, structural-change detection, bilinear time-series models, bispectral estimation, threshold models, catastrophic models and a generalized eigenstructure method
