Content: Social workers will inevitably encounter ethical dilemmas in their work. Ethical dilemmas can impact on social workers positively or negatively, at a number of levels, and in a range of ways. This paper outlines findings from a study in which Australian social workers detailed their experiences of ethical dilemmas, and discussed the short and long-term impacts and consequences resulting from these experiences. Recommendations are made for improved education and training for social workers in ethical decision-making, and the importance of professional support and supervision.

Content: This paper presents preliminary results of a research project focusing on implementation and evaluation of a 'Social Work Ethics Audit' risk management tool. The concept of the 'ethics audit' in Australia has not, as yet, been developed as a useful process or tool for front-line professional practice in human service organisations. The leader in the area of 'ethics audits' with specific reference to social work and human services is Frederic Reamer, a social work academic from the US who has developed the 'social work ethics audit' risk management tool. The "ethics audit"is described as an easy to use, practical risk management tool to assess and identify pertinent ethical issues, assess current practices, design strategies to stop ethics complaints, prevent lawsuits and monitor quality assurance. Reamer has outlined the concept of social work 'ethics audits' in detail and has proposed 17 areas of ethical risk that warrant consideration. As many of these areas are specific to the US context, and to social work as a licenced profession in the US, this research was developed to ascertain how the "ethics audit" could be modified for adaptation to the Australian context. The instructions for conduct of an ethics audit outlined by Reamer have been followed to "pilot test" the ethics audit process in 11 selected government and non-government human service organisations located in Queensland. Preliminary results presented in this paper demonstrate the process that agencies have engaged in to implement the ethics audit, and the areas of ethical risk that have been assessed as relevant and important. The research aims to explore the usefulness of the ethics audit to human service agencies and front-line staff, and its complementarity with existing quality assurance or accreditation processes.

Content: The decreasing number of Catholic priests seeking ordination has led to a variety of creative solutions to meet parishioners’ needs. While there are distinct similarities between the Catholic Social Teachings and the Canadian Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics there is little literature pertaining to the role or practice of social work within the Catholic Church. This exploratory study employing key informant interviews examined if there was a place for social work directly within the Church. Individuals presently providing social assistance within the Church did not typically have formal counselling preparation. As well, distinct gaps in service provision exist ranging from bereavement support to youth programming. Respondents stated that social workers would be a worthwhile addition to any pastoral team and that the provision of professional psychosocial supports should no longer occur at arms length from parishioners but should be incorporated directly into the ministry of the Catholic Church.

Content: This paper is an exploration of the ethical dilemmas in open-ended interview research with people with learning difficulties. We address the possibility that research which gives voice to the experience of abuse, from the viewpoint of the victim, can itself be abusive. Such research is justified in terms of empowering, illuminating and disseminating the meaning that participants give to their lives. Yet every stage of the process raises complex ethical issues when research participants are drawn from vulnerable and powerless groups in society, and the focus for investigation can be deemed private. As a vehicle for our exploration, we reflect on our ethical dilemmas in researching the story of a young woman who has learning difficulties and has been the victim of various forms of abuse. We argue that ethical dilemmas cannot be overcome solely by Ethical Codes or even predetermined 'good practice'. They are integral to the whole research process and necessitate continuous explicit examination of decision making processes within research.
