Series Statement: Progress in surgery Vol. 25
Content: This handy volume reviews the current approaches to acute appendicitis, appendectomy being the most commonly performed emergency surgical procedure in the western world. The benefits and costs of open versus laparoscopic appendectomy are discussed by international specialists in the field. Exact diagnosis on right iliac fossa pain is still difficult, especially in children, young females, older patients and during pregnancy. It is in these cases that the laparoscopic approach may be most beneficial, both in terms of diagnosis and surgery, whereas the open procedure is still the gold standard in patients with a clear diagnosis of appendicitis. However, laparoscopic surgery is at least as effective, although more expensive and complicated to perform. Furthermore, in terms of the wound infection rate, the laparoscopic method has proven to be more effective. This book is of interest for general and laparoscopic surgeons, as well as for emergency doctors, gastroenterologists, gynecologists and doctors with an interest in epidemiology

Series Statement: Advances in oto-rhino-laryngology Vol. 54
Content: This volume presents important new scientific data on hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy, a technique already in clinical use in the field of otolaryngology, head and neck surgery. As well as examining present-day applications, leading specialists look at possible future indications of this therapy and pay particular attention to otological complications caused by HBO therapy. Idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss, noise-induced hearing loss, and tinnitus are challenging problems for otologists because of the difficulties in finding the right treatment for many cases. The effectiveness of HBO therapy in treating these disorders is described in detail, in addition to its role in the management of bone-anchored reconstruction with titanium implants in irradiated head and neck cancer patients. Another new indication for HBO therapy in the field of otology, is facial palsy, which is closely examined in this book

Series Statement: Chemical immunology Vol. 66
Content: Just as the magnitude of the growth and developmental problems attributable to human helminthiasis are being fully realized, we are able for the first time to describe defined immune responses giving rise to the pathological lesions seen. On the basis of the different sets of cytokines produced by CD4+ T cells, these responses can be classified according to the Th1/Th2/Th0 paradigm. Deleterious inflammatory responses to metazoan parasites appear to be consistently associated with a highly polarized Th2 cytokine profile. Thus, host-parasite models involving specific enteric and tissue helminths have provided seminal data on immunoregulatory and immunopathogenetic responses that are more broadly generalizable to the entire Th1/Th2 paradigm. The first three articles in this volume present an overview of recent advances in the understanding of the induction of IgE, eosinophilic, and cytokine regulatory responses to helminthic infection. Subsequent articles comprehensively review immunopathogenetic aspects of schistosomiasis, hookworm infection, echinococcosis, lymphatic filariasis, onchocerciasis, toxocariasis, and cysticercosis, and, at the same time, emphasize key directions and priorities. Conclusions from animal models of infection are set in the context of human disease wherever possible. For all immunologists with an interest in cytokine biology and for those interested in the biology of tropical infectious diseases this volume is essential reading

Content: This book surveys experiences made with Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) dialysis membranes, ranging from a summary of the most recent experimental and clinical results to an overview of future potentials and new trends in research. Several articles treat the biophysical properties of the membrane, its chemical structure and manufacturing procedures aimed at obtaining hollow fibers suitable for medical purposes. Moreover, various experimental conditions are considered in order to identify the dialytic properties of the PMMA membrane and dialyzer series. In this context, particular emphasis is put on the last generation of PMMA membranes with higher porosity and ultrafiltration capacity. On the more practical side, an overview is given of various clinical conditions in which PMMA membranes are utilized at variable rates of ultrafiltration, blood and dialysate flows. The bio- or hemocompatibility of PMMA membranes is investigated, offering a summary of the blood-membrane interactions during hemodialysis. Furthermore, the importance of these aspects in relation to the chronic dialyzed and the acutely ill patients is highlighted, as well as long-term experiences made with different PMMA membranes. For those interested in the last developments and clinical results achieved with synthetic membranes, this book provides a substantial piece of information valuable either for further research or daily clinical practice

Content: Intracellular prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms cause some of the most intractable problems in the fields of human and animal infectious diseases. Such infections are characteristically long and chronic and accompanied by deleterious immunopathological changes. The nine chapters in this volume, all written by internationally acknowledged experts in their fields, explore the immunological features common to representative intracellular organisms and also the special features whereby particular species evade immune attack and how they are destroyed with special reference to experimental and human listeriosis, tuberculosis, leishmaniasis, toxoplasmosis, African and American trypanosomiasis, malaria, cryptosporidiosis and the cattle disease theileriosis. The emphasis is on the roles of lymphocytes, macrophages, NK cells, cytokines and the contrasting roles of Th1/Th2 cells in protective and counter-protective immune responses. The importance of understanding these phenomena for the development of vaccines, for strategies for ameliorating immunopathological responses and for explaining why some infections are important concomitants in AIDS while others are not is stressed. This volume brings together and establishes links between diverse studies concerning the immunological aspects of the host-parasite relationship otherwise scattered throughout the literature. Authoritative and up-to-date, it will be of particular interest to anyone working or teaching in the fields of immunology, parasitology, microbiology and infectious diseases

Content: A natural tension exists between the need of the eye for immune protection and the requirement that intraocular inflammation be avoided in order to prevent blindness. This tension results in immune responses to eye-derived antigens that are measured, selective, and appropriate, yet devoid of the capacity to promote inflammation or ocular cell death. In this book, the physiologic bases of ocular immune privilege and the distinctive systemic immune responses elicited by eye-derived antigens are described. Of course, inflammation does occur within the eye, and several chapters discuss the pathogeneses of these disorders which arise from infections, autoimmunity, and neoplasms. Finally, chapters devoted to corneal and retinal transplantation describe attempts to exploit ocular immune privilege to promote graft survival and thereby cure blindness. Ophthalmologists, both clinicians and physician scientists, general and tumor immunologists, transplantation biologists and anyone seeking to understand the immunopathogenic diseases that threaten vision will appreciate the up-to-date and authoritative information presented in this book
