Kurzfassung: The past three-quarters of a century has been a period of swift dissolving views, one passing in to the other so quickly that attention was usually fixed on the rapidity rather than on the magnitude of the changes. Occasionally, however, one takes a glance backward over a longer or shorter prospect, and then can realize how far the “hurrying years” have carried us. I hope that I may, without inducing the tedium which the ageing often inflict upon the younger by their reminiscences, be able to outline some of the academic movement which, during the last fifty years, I have observed more or less closely.

Kurzfassung: The official prophets of the New Germany have received more than their due share of attention In the foreign press. The sensational and, at times, fantastic notions of Herren Hitler, Goebbels, Rosenberg, and Streicher have diverted our attention from the many intellectuals who direct Germany's cultural institutions and write for the better class of journals. What is the attitude of these artists, writers, scholars, and scientists to the Third Reich? Do they welcome the National Socialist Weltanschauung, do they recoil from it in horror, or do they accept it because they are powerless to do anything else?

Kurzfassung: The Have-nots are clam.ouring that they are “peoples without space,” and are disturbing the world with their claims for expansion. Germany is arming; Italy is fighting; Japan, having done the immediately necessary fighting, is digesting her gains, and steadily, though less spectacularly, absorbing more. The Haves are counter-arming, with growing anxiety.

Kurzfassung: A Nomand Canadian the French called him, and such James Wilson Morrice was. A wanderer to the point of eccentricity, he lived for many years in a studio on the Quai des Grands Augustins, opposite the Ile de la Cité, in Paris, where a hallway filled with boxes and trunks testified that the owner was forever ready to depart at a moment's notice for Canada, Venice, North Africa, or the West Indies.

Kurzfassung: Sophoclean drama, like Shakespearean, is becoming more and more blurred by interpretations. Critics, in their natural desire to say something new, come to regard the object of their criticism as a field for the exercise of their own ingenuity, and flatteringly ascribe to their author the subtleties of which in the process they find themselves capable. For instance, it should be axiomatic that the profundity of a great dramatist is not achieved by the easy method of suppressing material facts, of setting his audience puzzles to solve with insufficient data; and yet it is often the gaps in the dramatist's argument that are seized upon as containing the fundamental meaning of a play. I think we should assume as a starting-point in all our interpretations, that, so far as the actual events of his story are concerned, the dramatist is to be taken at his plain word; also, and even more important, we should keep in mind that what we are contemplating is a play, not an incident of real life, in which motives may be veiled and unseen acts may be a matter of doubt and surmise. In a play unknown events, unknown motives do not occur (except in so far as the audience's knowledge may represent the unknown); the persons exist in their words and their acts—no more; and we have no right to use the dramatic difficulties and compromises, the necessary short-cuts and stretches of probability, for the purpose either of complicating the psychology or otherwise deepening the meaning of a play. What we are not told is done, is not done; beyond our ken there is no action, nothing happens; a dramatis persona does no more than is set down for him. In brief, it is a first principle that you cannot judge or interpret a play by what is not there. A dramatist's first purpose is to make what happens plain; he is not trying to hide his meaning.

Kurzfassung: Every great man has his lighter moments. Dr. Johnson composed the “great whale” periods of the Rambler, made a Dictionary (itself at times very good light reading), edited Shakespeare, and in his old age wrote comfortably mellow and acute Lives of the Poets. He was much concerned about politics and religion. Prodded judiciously at intervals by Boswell, he discoursed wisely and wittily on such diverse subjects as matrimony, methods of shaving, and the wretchedness of a sea-life. He noted, as a traveller with an inquiring mind, the treelessness of Scotland and the grossness of French manners. But he had his undress moments, when he was neither author nor sage nor observer, and some of them were spent in reading novels.

Kurzfassung: “He stretcheth out the north over empty space and hangeth the earth upon nothing.” Thus eloquently the Patriarch Job uttered his lofty panegyric on the works of the Almighty; and in one brief but majestic sentence, breathing limitless power and mystery, he comprehended the most significant astronomical knowledge of antiquity.
