Content: Historical gardens listed as cultural monuments are valuable evidence of our civilization. How can they be preserved under changing climatic conditions? On the basis of four historical gardens, this project analyzes the natural, cultural and social framework in which the "images" of the garden are inscribed. Yet, what courses of action are possible if plants or trees are no longer adapted to the local conditions? Representatives from the natural and social sciences, the humanities, and historical garden conservation present their first joint solution strategies for the preservation of historical gardens as complete works of art facing climate change

Content: This is a must-read how-to guide if you are planning to embark on a scholarly digitisation project. Tailored to the specifications of the British Library’s EAP (Endangered Archives Programme) projects, it is full of sound, practical advice about planning and carrying out a successful digitisation project in potentially challenging conditions. From establishing the scope of the project, via practical considerations about equipment, work routines, staffing, and negotiating local politics, to backing up your data and successfully completing your work, Remote Capture walks you through every stage. Bursting with helpful hints, advice and experiences from people who have completed projects everywhere around the globe from Latin America to Africa to Asia, this book offers a taste of the challenges you might encounter and the best ways to find solutions. With a particular focus on the process of digitisation, whether using a camera or a scanner, Remote Capture is invaluable reading for anybody considering such a project. It will be particularly useful to those who apply for an EAP grant, but the advice in these pages is necessary for anyone wondering how to go about digitising an archive

Content: How does the experience of turning a door handle, opening a door from one space to lead into another, affect us? This book aims to understand how these everyday acts are influenced by architectural form, a concept that is vital for all architects to grasp if our buildings are to be anything more than a commercial or aesthetic enterprise. It considers how specific built elements and volumes can sustain or deny our powers of decision. Each chapter focuses on a different aspect of our daily interactions with architecture, looking at stairs, floors and paths, moving interior spaces, perception and perspective, transparency and the relationship between a building and its setting. This book is not just for architects and designers engaged in the production of space, but for all those who seek a richer understanding of their place in the built world

Content: For the past 150 years, architecture has been a significant tool in the hands of city planners and leaders. In Creating Cities/Building Cities, Peter Karl Kresl and Daniele Ietri illustrate how these planners and leaders have utilized architecture to achieve a variety of aims, influencing the situation, perception and competitiveness of their cities. Whether the objective is branding, re-vitalization of the economy, beautification, development of an economic and business center, status development, or seeking distinction with the tallest building, distinctive architecture has been an essential instrument for those who manage the course of a city's development. Since the 1870s, and the reconstruction of Chicago following the Great Fire, architecture has been affected powerfully by advances in design, technology and materials used in construction. The authors identify several key elements in such a strategic initiative and in the penultimate chapter examine several cases of cities that have ignored one or more of these elements and have failed in their attempt. A unique set of insights into this fascinating topic, this study will appeal to specialists in urban planning, economic geography and architecture. Readers interested in urban development will also find its coverage accessible and enlightening

Content: "Clothes make the man, and textiles define spaces. Interior design in 18th century royal residences was decisively influenced by textiles. Throughout Europe, woven, painted, or printed silk fabric and braid, as well as silver and gold trimmings, lace and tassels determined the effect of courtly representative and private spaces. This volume assembles essays on furnishing textiles of European courtly interiors. It encourages cross-border investigations into artistic relationships that developed in the field of textile interior design"--Page 4 of cover

Series Statement: Social and cultural geography Volume 26
Content: Over the last years, kollektiv orangotango has gathered more than 40 counter-cartographies from all over the world. As the first of its kind, this collection shows how maps are created and transformed as part of political struggles, for critical research, or in art and education: from indigenous struggles in the Amazon to the anti-eviction movement in San Francisco, from defending commons in Mexico to mapping refugee camps with balloons in Lebanon, from slums in Nairobi to squats in Berlin, from supporting communities in the Philippines to accusing sexual harassment in Cairo. This Is Not an Atlas seeks to inspire, to document the underrepresented, and to be a useful companion for those seeking to become counter-cartographers themselves.

Content: "City Riffs traces the changing perspectives of urban design within an ever-changing global context. Moving between sixteen cities, the book also considers trans-disciplinary aspects of urbanism; formal and informal growth in Kumasi and Caracas, post-colonial structures in New Delhi and Prague, post-urban phenomena in Detroit and Brussels; cultural transitions in Antwerp and Salzburg; the changing nature of place in Seoul and Mostar; and new ecological realities in New York and Rome. Urbanism is viewed as the production of space-integrating aspects of design, ecology, and engineering, as well as other influences on urban cognition such as social, economical, and psychological interactions. As it covers a wide range of places and methods, this book will be an asset to anyone who works on, lives in, or thinks about cities. "--

Content: This book discusses the architectural influence that Japan and the West have had on each other during the last 150 years. While the recent histories of Western and Japanese architecture have been well recorded, they have rarely been interwoven. Based on extensive research, this book provides a synthetic overview that brings together the main themes of Japanese and Western architecture since 1850 and shows that neither could exist in its present state without the other. It should be no surprise that the Bank of Japan in Tokyo is based upon the national banks in Brussels and London, or that Le Corbusier's cabanon at Cap Martin in the south of France is based upon an eight mat tatami room. In considering these histories, this book demonstrates the mutual inter-dependence of both architectural cultures while, at the same time, acknowledging their differences
