Content: Recueil de contributions d'histoire romaine en hommage à l'oeuvre de Jean-Michel Carrié par ses collègues, élèves et amis. 00During a career that led him from Paris X to the EHESS, Jean-Michel Carrié profoundly enriched our knowledge of Late Antiquity, to which he dedicated the largest part of his works. In his detailed articles as in his syntheses, he gave a documented and balanced appreciation of the Late Roman Empire, through a combined examination of various sources, particularly papyrus and imperial constitutions. His work shed new and fertile light on large parts of the structures of the Late Roman State: the administration and its tax system, with their impact on the Roman society, or the defence of the Empire, its methods and means, to mention only the main domains which he illustrated. With this volume, the editors wished to pay a due tribute to Jean-Michel Carrié's scientific and human 'libera curiositas': a "free curiosity" variously experienced by the forty contributors of these 'Mélanges', as colleagues, friends, readers or students. The studies collected in the volume cover the main fields explored by Jean-Michel Carrié, first of all the tax system and the Late Roman army, its foreign auxiliaries as its Egyptian garrisons. Secondly, the Roman frontier policy is studied through the questions of diplomatic exchanges, alliances and federates? recruitment. In the third part, the contributions dedicated to the regional societies and economies reflect the geographical extent of the scientific interests of Jean-Michel Carrié, from Britain to Syria, through Italy and Egypt. A tribute is also given to its method in the interpretation of the literary sources, such as the 'Latin Panegyrics', the 'Res Gestae' of Ammianus, the 'Historia Augusta', the speeches of Libanios and Procopius? 'Wars'. Finally, the last part of the volume is dedicated to the Christianisation of the Late Roman State and Society

Content: What was the function of representing deities and also humans in the ancient Near-East? Which were the different ways of making gods visible, and the specific functions of these representations? Might these material and visual representations help us to better understand official cults, as well as private cults? What was the role of images in the royal cult? Was the king the only “image” of the gods, or could all humans fulfill this role? Why were cult images forbidden? Does the biblical prohibition have any precedent or parallel in the ancient Near-East, or elsewhere? And how do the ways of representing gods and humans change in the absence of cultic images? The conference Representing Gods and Humans in the Ancient Near-East and in the Bible, held at the Collège de France, Paris, on May 5-6 2015, sought to shed light on these questions surrounding the image, a critical issue for our understanding of ancient as well as modern religions

Content: Scholarly investigation of devotional images from the medieval period has never explored, in a European context, the question of Marian paintings functioning as portable relics. The model of the picture-reliquary ? : a single, diptych, or triptych panel comprising the portrait of the ?Virgin and Child? painted on wood (or, more rarely, on gilded glass, ?verreéglomisé?) set in a large framework encrusted with relics (occasionally with precious stones) was particularly widespread in the territory of Little Poland from c. 1420. Polish reliquaries, known until the beginning of the sixteenth century, should be considered as an adaptation of iconic types and forms of Byzantine provenance, which were reinterpreted in the painting of the Italian ?Trecento?. Of particular note is the Siennese model of the portable Marian altar piece made popular from the 1330s-40s. From the comparative study of the works, concerning their similarities and their antiquity, one envisages the advent of such a formal concept in Poland either directly from Italy, or by the intermediary of Bohemia

Content: Even before the First World War, Paris attracted artists from throughout Europe: Russian, Polish, Hungarian, Czech, or German artists, who came to study at the Academies of painting or of music. Several waves of migration brought Jewish artists who were fleeing persecution, and these artists formed networks of friendship with French artists in Paris: channels that operated during the Occupation and the Vichy regime to protect the victims of that regime. The intervention by Sacha Guitry and Arletty on behalf of Tristan Bernard is well known, but Limore Yagil reveals many others as well. At the intersection of cultural and political history, Yagil traces these networks of solidarity from their origins, reconstructing a geography of mutual cooperation, and investigating the significance that should be given to these acts of civil disobedience

Content: "The Karnak Cachette, excavated by Georges Legrain between 1903 and 1907, is one of the most fascinating discoveries of Egyptian archaeology. The first reason lies in the very high number of objects found in it (statues, stelae, furniture of various kinds), some of them still unpublished, all of which are documents of major importance for the religious life of Karnak, but also more generally for the history and art of Pharaonic Egypt between the Middle Kingdom and the Ptolemaic period. Content: The French Renaissance celebrates Petrarch but ignores Occitan troubadours. We owe their rediscovery to the Vies of the most famous and ancient Provençal Poets of Provençal Jean de Nostredame, published in 1575 in Lyon in French and, the same year, in Italian. The influence of this founding work is considerable in France and in Europe during the next two centuries. In France, Nostradamus theories about medieval literary history are taken by scholars of the late XVIth and beginning of the XVIIth century, such as Claude Fauchet and Etienne Pasquier in whom we can see the founders of French literary historiography. In their turn, the ideas of these scholars are integrated in the reflections carried out from the 1640s in Languedoc by authors such as Pierre de Caseneuve or Pierre Borel. Content: Contempler un tableau ou un paysage, écouter une pièce de musique, s'immerger dans un univers sonore, lire un poème, voir un film : telle est l'expérience esthétique. Or, dans chaque culture humaine, elle est de toutes les expériences communément vécues à la fois la plus banale et la plus singulière. Singulière car elle a pour condition qu'on s'y adonne sans autre but immédiat que cette activité elle-même ; banale, car elle n'en demeure pas moins de part en part une des modalités de base de l'expérience commune du monde. Elle exploite le répertoire de l'attention, de l'émotion et du plaisir mais elle leur donne une inflexion particulière, voire paradoxale. Il s'agit donc, démontre Jean-Marie Schaeffer, de comprendre non pas l'expérience des ouvres d'art dans sa spécificité, mais l'expérience esthétique dans son caractère générique, c'est-à-dire indépendamment de son objet.
