Content: "In May of 1945, German forces surrendered to the Allied powers, effectively putting an end to World War II in Europe. But the aftershocks of this global military conflict did not cease with the signing of truces and peace treaties. Millions of lost and homeless POWs, slave laborers, political prisoners, and concentration camp survivors overwhelmed Germany, a country in complete disarray. British and American soldiers gathered the malnourished and desperate foreigners, and attempted to repatriate them to Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Ukraine, and the USSR. But after exhaustive efforts, there remained over a million displaced persons who either refused to go home or, in the case of many, had no home to which to return. They would spend the next three to five years in displaced persons camps, divided by nationalities, temporary homelands in exile, with their own police forces, churches, schools, newspapers, and medical facilities.
Content: The international community couldn't agree on the fate of the Last Million, and after a year of fruitless debate and inaction, an International Refugee Organization was created to resettle them in lands suffering from labor shortages. But no nations were willing to accept the 200,000 to 250,000 Jewish men, women, and children who remained trapped in Germany. In 1948, the United States, among the last countries to accept anyone for resettlement, finally passed a Displaced Persons Bill - but as Cold War fears supplanted memories of WWII atrocities, the bill only granted visas to those who were reliably anti-communist, including thousands of former Nazi collaborators, Waffen-SS members, and war criminals, while barring the Jews who were suspected of being Communist sympathizers or agents because they had been recent residents of Soviet-dominated Poland.
Content: Only after the passage of the controversial UN resolution for the partition of Palestine and Israel's declaration of independence were the remaining Jewish survivors finally able to leave their displaced persons camps in Germany."--

[et al.] , The number of central banks in the world is approaching 180, a tenfold increase since the beginning of the twentieth century. What lies behind the spread of this economic institution? What underlying process has brought central banks to hold such a key role in economic life today? This book examines from a transatlantic perspective how the central bank has become the bank of banks. Thirteen distinguished economists and central bankers have been brought together to evaluate how central banks work, arrive at their policies, choose their instruments and gauge their success in managing economies, both in times of crisis and periods of growth

The selection of articles in this collection reflects the skill and experience of Harold Mulherin, who has himself made several high quality contributions to this subject. I recommend the book to all who would like to know the best that has been written about mergers and acquisitions.'--Harold Demsetz, University of California, Los Angeles, US. This significant collection of articles comprises seminal works in recent empirical research on mergers and acquisitions. The papers provide a detailed analysis of fundamental questions such as the sources of gains in mergers and acquisitions, the role of activists in the takeover process, the existence of merger waves, the relevance of auction models in corporate takeovers and the measurement of bidder returns. This volume, with an original introduction by the editor, is an indispensible tool to scholars in finance, economics and industrial organization as well as policymakers in securities regulation, corporate law and antitrust

Conclusion / Jason Heyes and Ludek Rychly , The 2008 financial crisis marked the beginning of a prolonged and ongoing period of extreme economic turbulence that has created multiple challenges for both governments and national systems of labour administration. Difficult economic conditions are encouraging a reevaluation of established policies and institutions in the areas of labour, employment, social protection and industrial relations. This book analyses recent reforms in labour administration and national labour policies, charting their development and discussing the challenges and opportunities faced by governments, ministries of labour, labour inspectors, employer organisations and trade unions. The contributors draw upon new and original research to explore issues including labour law, public employment services, labour inspection and industrial relations. They evaluate the effectiveness of implementation, addressing questions relating to the structure and management of labour ministries, regulatory bodies and the resources that they have at their disposal. Future prospects for labour administration are also considered. This book will prove a thought-provoking read for academics, researchers and students of economics -- particularly labour economics, social policy and public administration. Policy-makers and practitioners involved with labour administration at any level will also find this book to be an invaluable reference tool

Content: In December 2012, Australia became the first nation in the world to require all tobacco products to be sold in standard plain packs under the leadership of the then Health Minister Nicola Roxon. Tobacco companies have had global apoplexy about the law. Humiliated in the Australian High Court with a 6-1 defeat, their hopes now rest with deterring other nations from following suit by pursuing international trade law action. With a combined 50 years of research and advocacy experience in tobacco control, the authors set out the evidence for the importance of plain packaging in striking at the heart of what remains of tobacco advertising. They examine the history of the idea, the tobacco industry's frantic efforts to derail it, and the early evidence for its impact. Most importantly, they give tools to policy makers in other countries wanting to make the best case for plain packaging and to defend it from the inevitable attacks that will follow.
