Content: This is a renewal-theoretic analysis of a class of single-item (s, S) inventory systems. Included, in a unified exposition, are both con tinuous and periodic review systems under fairly general random de mand processes. The monograph is complete in the sense that it starts from the derivation of the time dependent and stationary dis tributions of basic stochastic processes related to these systems and concludes with the construction and testing of simple, distribution free approximations for optimal control policies. However, it is rather incomplete as an account of single-item inventory systems in that it narrowly focuses on systems with full backlogging of unfilled demand and constant lead times, through what has come to be known as stationary analysis. The level is intermediate, and the style is informal. Some prior knowledge of probability theory and inventory control is assumed on the part of the reader. Given these, the monograph is self-contained. Extensive use is made ofrenewal-theoretic concepts and results; these are reviewed in Chapter 2

Content: Analysis and Modeling of Manufacturing Systems is a set of papers on some of the newest research and applications of mathematical and computational techniques to manufacturing systems and supply chains. These papers deal with fundamental questions (how to predict factory performance: how to operate production systems) and explicitly treat the stochastic nature of failures, operation times, demand, and other important events. Analysis and Modeling of Manufacturing Systems will be of interest to readers with a strong background in operations research, including researchers and mathematically sophisticated practitioners

Content: This chapter is organized as follows. The economic problem on which this book focuses is motivated in Section 1. The two tools used to study this economic problem, which are real options theory and game theory, are discussed in Sections 2 and 3, respectively. Section 4 surveys the contents of this book. In Section 5 some promising extensions of the research presented in this book are listed. 1. TECHNOLOGY INVESTMENT Investment expenditures of companies govern economic growth. Es pecially investments in new and more efficient technologies are an impor tant determinant. In particular, in the last two decades an increasing part of the investment expenditures concerns investments in informa tion and communication technology. Kriebel, 1989 notes that (already) in 1989 roughly 50 percent of new corporate capital expenditures by major United States companies was in information and communication technology. Due to the rapid progress in these technologies, the tech nology investment decision of the individual firm has become a very complex matter. As an example of the very high pace of technological improvement consider the market for personal computers. IBM intro duced its Pentium personal computers in the early 1990s at the same price at which it introduced its 80286 personal computers in the 1980s. Therefore it took less than a decade to improve on the order of twenty times in terms of both speed and memory capacities, without increasing the cost (Yorukoglu, 1998)

Note: This monograph evolved over the past five years. It had its origin as a set of lecture notes prepared for the Ninth Summer School of Mathematical Physics held at Ravello, Italy, in 1984 and was further refined in seminars and lectures given primarily at the University of Colorado. The material presented is the product of a single mathematical question raised by Dave Kassoy over ten years ago. This question and its partial resolution led to a successful, exciting, almost unique interdisciplinary collaborative scientific effort. The mathematical models described are often times deceptively simple in appearance. But they exhibit a mathematical richness and beauty that belies that simplicity and affirms their physical significance. The mathematical tools required to resolve the various problems raised are diverse, and no systematic attempt is made to give the necessary mathematical background. The unifying theme of the monograph is the set of models themselves. This monograph would never have come to fruition without the enthusiasm and drive of Dave Eberly- a former student, now collaborator and coauthor- and without several significant breakthroughs in our understanding of the phenomena of blowup or thermal runaway which certain models discussed possess. A collaborator and former student who has made significant contributions throughout is Alberto Bressan. There are many other collaborators William Troy, Watson Fulks, Andrew Lacey, Klaus Schmitt- and former students- Paul Talaga and Richard Ely- who must be acknowledged and thanked
