Content: "Common sense suggests that it is always preferable to have more options than fewer, and better to have more knowledge than less. This provocative book argues that, very often, common sense fails. Sometimes it is simply the case that less is more; people may benefit from being constrained in their options or from being ignorant." "The three long essays that constitute this book revise and expand the ideas developed in Jon Elster's classic study Ulysses and the Sirens. It is not simply a new edition of the earlier book, though; many of the issues merely touched on before are explored here in much more detail." "The book will interest professionals and students in philosophy, political science, psychology, and economics."--BOOK JACKET.

Series Statement: Cambridge studies in contentious politics
Content: "Over the past two decades the study of social movements, revolution, democratization and other non-routine politics has flourished. And yet research on the topic remains highly fragmented, reflecting the influence of at least three traditional divisions. The first of these reflects the view that various forms of contention are distinct and should be studied independent of others. Separate literatures have developed around the study of social movements, revolutions and industrial conflict. A second approach to the study of political contention denies the possibility of general theory in deference to a grounding in the temporal and spatial particulars of any given episode of contention. The study of contentious politics are left to 'area specialists' and/or historians with a thorough knowledge of the time and place in question. Finally, overlaid on these two divisions are stylized theoretical traditions - structuralist, culturalist, and rationalist - that have developed largely in isolation from one another." http://www.loc.gov/catdir/description/cam021/2001016172.html.

Content: "'Does your job make a meaningful contribution to the world?' David Graeber asked this question in a playful, provocative online essay titled On the Phenomenon of Bullshit Jobs. He defined a bullshit job as 'a form of paid employment that is so completely pointless, unnecessary, or pernicious that even the employee cannot justify its existence, even though as part of the conditions of employment, the employee feels obliged to pretend that this is not the case.' After a million views in seventeen different languages, people all over the world are still debating the answer. ... Graeber, in his singularly searing and illuminating style, identifies the five types of bullshit jobs and argues that when 1 percent of the population controls most of a society's wealth, they control what jobs are 'useful' and 'important.' ... Graeber illustrates how nurses, bus drivers, musicians, and landscape gardeners provide true value, and what it says about us as a society when we look down upon them. Using arguments from some of the most revered political thinkers, philosophers, and scientists of our time, Graeber articulates the societal and political consequences of these bullshit jobs. Depression, anxiety, and a warped sense of our values are all dire concerns. He provides a blueprint to undergo a shift in values, placing creative and caring work at the center of our culture, providing the meaning and satisfaction we all crave."--Jacket

    Uniform Title: Generation Greta
Content: Introduction: We are young we are here, we want a future without fear! -- The climate crisis is just the beginning : who are youth protesters and what do they want? -- Greta's generation : the face of Gen Z? -- Solidarity versus intergenerational conflict : how Gen Z are engaging society -- Climate protest or populism : understanding Gen Z's political orientation -- No interest in party politics : why do Gen Z feel alienated? -- The digital virtuosos : the power of media for communication and organisation -- Interactive education : demand for more digitalisation at school/demand to be put at the centre of teaching -- What schools lack : developing knowledge and skills for life -- Who falls through the cracks? The experiences of disadvantaged youth -- Jobs in transition : navigating a shifting labour market -- The private lives of generation Greta : gender, sexuality and relationships -- Stuck between the climate crisis and the coronavirus pandemic
Content: "Gen Z is a vital, thought-provoking portrait of an astonishing generation. Drawing on firsthand interviews and empirical evidence, it offers insight into the boom in political activism amongst those born post-2000, exploring its roots and wide implications for the future of our society. As environmental disaster threatens the fundamental existence and livelihoods of Generation Z, this book considers how the fact that they have taken up the fight is likely to be one of the best things that could have happened to them. Focusing on the school climate change strikes and Greta Thunberg as initiator and icon of the Fridays for Future movement, it reveals the evolving world of Gen Z at school, at work, at home and online. It documents the development of their politicization, the challenges they and their activism face in light of the global pandemic and considers how the experience of those on the margins can differ from their peers. Gen Z is a compelling study of how fighting the climate crisis is only the beginning for these young people. It offers insight for all those interested in the study of adolescence and emerging adulthood, as well as teachers, youth workers, civil society activists, policymakers, politicians and parents who want to understand young people's aspirations for the future"--

Content: "Belonging - with peers, in the classroom, or on campus - is a critical dimension of success at college. It can affect a student's degree of academic adjustment, achievement, aspirations, or even whether a student stays in school. This book explores how belonging differs based on students' social identities, such as race, gender, sexual orientation, or the conditions they encounter on campus. The second edition of College Students' Sense of Belonging explores student sub-populations and campus environments, offering readers updated information about sense of belonging, how it develops for students, and a conceptual model for helping students belong and thrive. Underpinned by theory and research and offering practical guidelines for improving educational environments and policies, this book is an important resource for higher education and student affairs professionals, scholars, and graduate students interested in students' success"--Provided by publisher

All over the world, public officials are using the behavioral sciences to protect the environment, promote employment and economic growth, reduce poverty, and increase national security. In this book, Cass R. Sunstein, the eminent legal scholar and best-selling co-author of Nudge, breaks new ground with a deep yet highly readable investigation into the ethical issues surrounding nudges, choice architecture, and mandates, addressing such issues as welfare, autonomy, self-government, dignity, manipulation, and the constraints and responsibilities of an ethical state. Complementing the ethical discussion, The Ethics of Influence: Government in the Age of Behavioral Science contains a wealth of new data on people's attitudes towards a broad range of nudges, choice architecture, and mandates."

Content: "The first edition of this book was published in 1999. Since then, several theoretical and empirical advances have occurred for dissonance theory. This second edition highlights those advances. For example, chapter four presents a new extension of dissonance theory, referred to as the action-based model. Chapter six considers the connections between dissonance processes and other motivational processes. Chapter five illustrates how dissonance processes play a fundamental role in a broad array of information processes and how the theory then contributes valuable insights into a wide range of phenomena. Chapter ten discusses a new mathematical model of dissonance processes, chapter eleven presents evidence on the neural correlates of dissonance processes. In addition, other chapters that already presented important advances in the first edition have been updated with coverage of more recent research supporting these original advances. Finally, some chapters were reproduced verbatim from the first edition; this occurred for chapters written by authors who are deceased or who have retired. The chapters included in the second edition have been grouped into three parts, organized on the basis of themes shared by the chapters. Part one, consists of chapters discussing work that uses the original version of dissonance theory. Part two, comprises chapters that discuss the revisions of cognitive dissonance theory that use the self as a crucial factor in dissonance processes. Part three, includes a chapter that reviews several mathematical models of dissonance processes and then presents a novel one."--Preface. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2019 APA, all rights reserved).
