    Content: How does migration become "illegal"? Illegality cannot be observed. The work deconstructs the notion of "illegal migration" or "illegal" migrants as factual circumstances by elaborating and analysing the underlying processes, thus highlighting the constructedness as such and its specific character. The analysis concentrates on the level of EU law and ranges from migration control instruments and the phenomenon of externalisation to the involvement of third parties, the right of residence and entry bans. It is supplemented by a comprehensive examination of terminological and methodological issues.

    Content: Dem Begriff "Transparenz" kam erst ab den 1970er-Jahren eine politische Bedeutung zu. Dennoch zeigt Sandra Zimmermann anhand von sechs Fallbeispielen, dass bereits seit dem Deutschen Kaiserreich über Transparenz diskutiert wurde. Sie wurde insbesondere als ein Gegenmittel zu Korruption begriffen und somit im Zusammenhang mit Korruptionsskandalen gefordert. Parlamentarische Untersuchungsausschüsse bzw. -kommissionen, die häufig zur Aufklärung solcher Skandale eingesetzt wurden, spielten dabei eine wichtige Rolle. In ihnen wurde Transparenz gefordert und über sie diskutiert. Die Ausschüsse sollten durch transparente Ermittlungen den Skandal untersuchen, das Parlament reinigen und die Bevölkerung beruhigen./p〉 The term "transparency" only gained political significance from the 1970s onwards. Nevertheless, Sandra Zimmermann shows, on the basis of six case studies, that transparency has been discussed since the German Empire (Kaiserreich). It was understood as an antidote to corruption and thus demanded in connection with corruption-scandals. Parliamentary committees of enquiry or commissions of enquiry, which were often set up to investigate such scandals, played an important role in this context. Transparency was demanded and discussed in them. The committees were supposed to investigate the scandal through transparent investigations, to cleanse parliament and to reassure the population after such a scandal

    Content: Which depictions of ‘distant others’ are widespread and have a strong appeal in the Global North and which are not? Who speaks on whose behalf? Who remains unrepresented? This sociological study analyses and discusses controversial debates surrounding epistemic, political and ethical aspects of representation in the context of knowledge production for humanitarian and academic purposes. It demonstrates how international NGOs are criticised for but also justified in using photographs that depict suffering to ask for donations, and highlights why research into, for or with marginalised individuals should be conducted in a politically and ethically responsible manner.

    Content: This book describes the transformative power of the European Union in the area of gender equality policy in Poland and Germany from 2004 until 2012. It gives the readers an insight into the process of implementing EU law and the major actors and variables which influence this process and its outcome. The book includes an analysis of national law from the perspective of the implementation of EU directives as well as interviews with experts in this area. It identifies the main actors that support or block the law’s implementation as well as the sociocultural conditioning of the process of implementation and its final outcome in both countries.     Content: Modern da‘wah (the “summons” or “invitation” to practise Islam) comprises a wide range of activities and manifests itself in various contexts.This study investigates Salafi da‘wah in Germany and the new social-religious movement behind it from its beginnings on a nationwide level to 2011. Based on an analysis of Salafi texts and lectures and fieldwork among Salafi lay activists, it explores Salafi definitions of da‘wah and “authentic Islam”, strategies, concepts and practices of Salafi preachers as well as recurrent motifs in their da‘wah. It also demonstrates which factors have shaped the different trends of the German Salafi movement and their calls to practise Islam during this period. The work reveals the complex and heterogeneous nature of Salafi da‘wah in Germany, and shows how Salafis – on a tightrope walk between dogmatism and strategic flexibility – constantly adapt their da‘wah to the changing sociopolitical environment, target groups and the assumed needs of da‘wah in Germany.

    Content: The logic of capitalism is that of dividing and sharing. Only that in capitalism, people do not share, but rather, they themselves are divided up. For this reason, the British historian E.P. Thompson claims that »it was always a problem to explain the commons with capitalist categories«. Whoever enters into the world of the commons encounters another logic, another language and other categories. In this volume, authors from all continents investigate the anthropological foundations of the commons, and propose them at the same time as concrete utopias (E. Bloch). They make it possible to understand that everything is, or can become, commons: through processes of shared responsibility, in laboratories for self-organization and through freedom in solidarity.
