Content: The emergence of new paradigms for data management raises a variety of exciting challenges. An important goal of database theory is to answer these challenges by providing sound foundations for the development of the field. This volume contains the papers selected for the third International Conference on Database Theory, ICDT'90. The conferences in this series are held biannually in beautiful European cities, Rome in 1986 and Bruges in 1988 with proceedings published as volumes 234 and 326 in the same series. ICDT'90 was organized in Paris by the Institut National de Recherche en Informatique et Automatique. The conference features 2 invited presentations and 31 papers selected from 129 submissions. The papers describe original ideas and new results on the foundations of databases, knowledge bases, object-oriented databases, relational theory, transaction management, data structures and deductive databases. The volume offers a good overview of the state of the art and the current trends in database theory. It should be a valuable source of information for researchers interested in the field.

Content: Database technology is currently being pushed by the needs of new applications and pulled by the oppor- tunities of novel developments in hardware and systems architecture. The invited paper, two panel sessions and 27 papers in this volume report on how the technology is currently extending. One broad area covered is extended database semantics, including data models and data types, databases and logic, complex objects, and expert system approaches to databases. The other area covered is raw architectures and increased database systems support, including novel transaction models, data distribution and replication, database administration, and access efficiency.

Content: Database role in information systems: The evolution of database technology and its impact on enterprise information systems -- Future database technology: Driving forces and directions -- Management of Multimedia Complex Objects in the '90s -- Database language standards: Past, present, and future -- Language technology for post-relational data systems -- Human factors of database systems -- Evolution of data models -- Object-oriented database systems: Concepts and perspectives -- Deductive database rule languages: Analysis and case study -- Extensibility in the starburst experimental database system -- Logical foundation of data replication -- Trends in distributed and cooperative database management -- Performance and reliability issues in future DBMSs -- The impact of hardware on database systems.
Content: This volume contains 14 survey articles by reputed database researchers. They give an account of the state of the art, present research highlights and offer an outlook into the '90s regarding the most likely evolution of database technology-research, ad-tech, products and applications. The volume is structured into the following parts: - The evolution of database technology and its impact on enterprise information systems (keynote paper); - Demands on database systems in the '90s (office, engineering, science, multimedia, standardization); - User aspects (application programmers, ad hoc query users); - Database system and architecture concepts for novel applications (data models, object orientation, deductive DBMS, extensibility, data replication); - System and implementation aspects (performance and reliability, distributed and cooperative DBMS, hardware impact). The volume may serve as an orientation for all those who are interested in database systems and their impact on computer applications.
