Paris 1936. Pierrot ist 7 und Halbwaise, da sein deutscher Vater gezeichnet von traumatischen Weltkriegserfahrungen Selbstmord begangen hat. Als auch seine Mutter stirbt, kommt er für kurze Zeit in eine jüdische Familie und danach in ein Waisenheim, wo ihn die Schwester seines Vaters ausfindig macht und nach Deutschland holt. Seine neue Heimstatt ist der Berghof des Führers, der ihn "lieb gewinnt"und zum gewissenlosen Nazi "abrichtet". Er wird in den Jahren bis 1945 Zeuge historisch verbriefter Begegnungen und er wird zum Täter, als er seine Tante und deren Freund denunziert, die ein Attentat auf den Führer geplant haben. Nach deren Hinrichtung entwickelt sich "der Junge" zum bedingungslosen Vasallen, bar jeglicher Empathie. Boyne legt hier nach eigenem Bekunden eine Art Neufassung des "Jungen im gestreiften Pyjama" (ID-A 34/07) vor. In Anbetracht des aktuell grassierenden Rassismus hat er seinem neuen Helden jegliche Unschuld genommen und die Transformation zum Täter vollzogen. Eine Transformation, die jedoch literarisch m.E. hinter dem Erfolgsband zurückbleibt und erst mit dem Epilog aufgewertet wird.
