Content: An icon of performance art and the indie-music world, this is the first book on the artist's full career to date, as curated by the artist herself. Laurie Anderson is one of the most revered artists working today, and she is as prolific as she is inventive. She is a musician, performance artist, composer, fiction writer, and filmmaker (her most recent foray, Heart of a Dog, was lauded as an "experimental marvel" by the Los Angeles Times). Anderson moves seamlessly between the music world and the fine-art world while maintaining her stronghold in both. A true polymath, her interest in new media made her an early pioneer of harnessing technology for artistic purposes long before the technology boom of the last ten years. Regardless of the medium, however, it is exploration of language (and how it seeps into the image) and storytelling that is her métier. A few years ago, Anderson began poring through her extensive archive of nearly forty years of work, which includes scores of documentation, notebooks, and sketchbooks. In the process, she rediscovered important work and looked at well-known projects with a new lens. In this landmark volume, the artist brings together the most comprehensive collection of her artwork to date, some of which has never before been seen or published. Spanning drawing, multimedia installations, performance, and new projects using augmented reality, the extensive volume traverses four decades of her groundbreaking art. Each chapter includes commentary written by Anderson herself, offering an intimate understanding of her work through the artist's own words.--Amazon

Content: PRIDE' is a photography book capturing the parades and protests in the gay community, with publication set to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, which took place on June 28, 1969. On June 28, 1970, the first gay pride marches took place in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Chicago commemorating the anniversary of the riots. Similar marches were organized in other cities-acting as both a celebration of gay culture and an activist movement for equal rights under the law. 0The book will be an inspiring visual history documenting the resilience of a marginalized group and their fight for civil rights. As gay rights in both America and the world have evolved, the scenes capturing the parade have as well-through signs, dress, and expressions of freedom and love, this book also tells the story of the ever-changing culture of a people. It is a book about celebration, oppression, hope, recognition, and, above all, pride in being who you are

Content: Francis Bacon is considered one of the most important painters of the 20th century. A major exhibition of his paintings at the Royal Academy of Arts in 2020 explores the role of animals in his work - not least the human animal. Having often painted dogs and horses, in 1969 Bacon first depicted bullfights. In this powerful series of works, the interaction between man and beast is dangerous and cruel, but also disturbingly intimate. Both are contorted in their anguished struggle and the erotic lurks not far away: "Bullfighting is like boxing," Bacon once said. "A marvellous aperitif to sex." Twenty-two years later, a lone bull was to be the subject of his final painting. In this fascinating publication - a significant addition to the literature on Bacon - expert authors discuss Bacon's approach to animals and identify his varied sources of inspiration, which included surrealist literature and the photographs of Eadweard Muybridge. They contend that, by depicting animals in states of vulnerability, anger and unease, Bacon sought to delve into the human condition. Exhibition: Royal Academy of Arts, London, UK (22.01-12.04.2021)

Content: "Recalling a charcoal she made in 1916, Georgia O'Keeffe later wrote, "I have made this drawing several times--never remembering that I had made it before--and not knowing where the idea came from." These drawings, and the majority of O'Keeffe's works in charcoal, watercolor, pastel and graphite, belong to series in which she develops and transforms motifs that lie between observation and abstraction. In the formative years of 1915 to 1918, she made as many works on paper as she would in the next 40 years, producing sequences in watercolor of abstract lines, organic landscapes and nudes, along with charcoal drawings she would group according to the designation "specials." While her practice turned increasingly toward canvas in subsequent decades, important series on paper reappeared--including charcoal flowers of the 1930s, portraits of the 1940s and aerial views of the 1950s."--Harvard Bookstore website (viewed on April 12, 2023)

Organized by the family of Basquiat, the exhibition and accompanying catalogue feature over 200 never before and rarely seen paintings, drawings, ephemera, and artifacts. The artist's contributions to the history of art and his exploration into our multi-faceted culture--incorporating music, the Black experience, pop culture, African American sports figures, literature, and other sources--are showcased alongside personal reminiscences and firsthand accounts providing unique insight into Basquiat's creative life and his singular voice that propelled the social and cultural narrative that continues to this day. Structured around key periods in his life, from his childhood and formative years, his meteoric rise in the art world and beyond, to his untimely death, the book features in-depth interviews with his surviving family members."

Content: "The world is in crisis: antisemitism, the "longest hatred," is rearing its ugliest heads, again. Although much has been written about the subject, very little has been done to educate the public specifically about antisemitism—existing curricula are either outdated or not comprehensive, and none are designed to be engaging, especially to the younger audiences that need to learn this subject most. A Brief and Visual History of Antisemitism aims to fill that glaring gap, not merely as a history textbook but as an epidemiological study that analyzes the pathology of the antisemitism virus from ancient to modern times: when, where, and how did antisemitism first emerge? How did the disease of Jew-hatred spread so far and wide? Why has the hateful virus proven so resilient over time? The goal of this highly visual book is thus not merely to inform of what has already transpired, but to empower individuals to make sense of the avalanche of anti-Jewish invective in real-time. As an added feature, Augmented Reality technology allows readers to use their phones (and a free app) to scan highlighted areas and reveal a trove of bonus contents such as archival footage, animations, official documents, and 3D objects that offer immersive perspectives on historical landmarks."

Content: "At the intersection of science and art, documentary and fantasy, the beautiful and the grotesque lies the work of Alexis Rockman, whose meticulously rendered paintings fascinate, amuse, and alarm us - often simultaneously - as they explore the relationship between man and nature." "A native New Yorker who frequented the American Museum of Natural History as a boy, Rockman is inspired by botanical and zoological illustrations, as well as early-twentieth-century murals and dioramas. Yet his work goes beyond those genres to portray, with dark humor, a variety of mutated and mutant animals (such as square cows and featherless chickens), interspecies couplings, and macabre visions of a future world defined by man's interventions that are the result of genetic engineering, pollution, and a loss of biodiversity
Content: Sometimes nature strikes back: in The Ecotourist, for instance, the artist wryly depicts his own decaying corpse lying in the rain forest as an array of exotic creatures come to feed on him." "This illustrated volume is the first to offer a comprehensive overview of Rockman's oeuvre, from his early works, such as the fascinating yet disquieting Aviary, in which birds perch against a blood red sky, to his more recent Expedition series, inspired by the artist's field studies in the rain forests of Brazil and Guyana. Rockman's intense palette is captured in full-color images - over 225 in all. Important large-scale works, such as A Recent History of the World (58 x 255 3/4 inches) and Evolution (96 x 288 inches), are reproduced here with foldout pages that convey the scope and detail of his paintings
Content: Ancillary illustrations - everything from Albrecht Durer's Young Hare to production drawings from Willis O'Brien's King Kong (1933) - point up the eclectic influences that invigorate Rockman's art and thinking: science-fiction iconography, Dutch still lifes, special effects in film, and ideas about the sublime." "Complementing the visual documentation of Rockman's work is commentary by the artist himself, culled from interviews conducted especially for this volume. Three incisive essays further elucidate the scientific and artistic influences on Rockman's art; at the same time, the authors describe how Rockman has broken with those traditions to create a unique, powerful, and at times haunting vision of the collision between man and the natural world."--BOOK JACKET
