Inhalt: Courses that study vectors and elementary matrix theory and introduce linear transformations have proliferated greatly in recent years. Most of these courses are taught at the undergraduate level as part of, or adjacent to, the second-year calculus sequence. Although many students will ultimately find the material in these courses more valuable than calculus, they often experience a class that consists mostly of learning to implement a series of computational algorithms. The objective of this text is to bring a different vision to this course, including many of the key elements called for in current mathematics-teaching reform efforts. Three of the main components of this current effort are the following: 1. Mathematical ideas should be introduced in meaningful contexts, with after a clear understanding formal definitions and procedures developed of practical situations has been achieved. 2. Every topic should be treated from different perspectives, including the numerical, geometric, and symbolic viewpoints. 3. The important ideas need to be visited repeatedly throughout the term, with students' understan9ing deepening each time. This text was written with these three objectives in mind. The first two chapters deal with situations requiring linear functions (at times, locally linear functions) or linear ideas in geometry for their understanding. These situations provide the context in which the formal mathematics is developed, and they are returned to with increasing sophistication throughout the text.

Inhalt: Having taught the theory of integration for several years at the University of Nancy I, then at the Ecole des Mines of the same city, I had followed the custom of the times of writing up de tailed solutions of exercises and problems, which I used to dis tribute to the students every week. Some colleagues who had had occasion to use these solutions have persuaded me that this work would be interesting to many students, teachers and researchers. The majority of these exercises are at the master's level; to them I have added a number directed to those who would wish to tackle greater difficulties or complete their knowledge on various points of the theory (third year students, diploma of education students, researchers, etc.). This book, I hope, will render to students the services that this kind of book brings them in general, with the reservation that can always be made in this case: that certain of them will be tempted to look at the solution to the exercises which are put to them without any personal effort. There is hardly any need to emphasize that such a use of this book would be no benefit. On the other hand, the student who after having worked seriously upon a problem, seeks some pointers from the solution, or compares it with his own, will be using this work in the optimal way.

Serie: Signal Processing and Digital Filtering
Inhalt: This book is based on several courses taught during the last five years at the City College of the City University of New York and at Fudan University, Shanghai, China in the Summer, 1986. It was originally our intention to present to a mixed audience of electrical engineers, mathematicians and computer scientists at the graduate level, a collection of algorithms which would serve to represent the vast array of algorithms designed over the last twenty years for com puting the finite Fourier transform (FFT) and finite convolution. However, it was soon apparent that the scope of the course had to be greatly expanded. For researchers interested in the design of new algorithms, a deeper understanding of the basic mathematical con cepts underlying algorithm design was essential. At the same time, a large gap remained between the statement of an algorithm and the implementation of the algorithm. The main goal of this text is to describe tools which can serve both of these needs. In fact, it is our belief that certain mathematical ideas provide a natural lan guage and culture for understanding, unifying and implementing a wide range of digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms. This belief is reenforced by the complex and time-consumming effort required to write code for recently available parallel and vector machines. A significant part of this text is devoted to establishing rules and precedures which reduce and at times automate this task. In Chapter 1, a survey is given of basic algebra

Anmerkung: From the Preface: "The material in this book is based on notes for a course which I gave several times at Brown University. The target of the course was juniors and seniors majoring in applied mathematics, engineering and other sciences. My basic goal in the course was to teach standard methods, or what I regard as a basic "bag of tricks". In my opinion the material contained here, for the most part, does not depart widely from traditional subject matter. One such departure is the discussion of discrete linear systems. Besides being interesting in its own right, this topic is included because the treatment of such systems leads naturally to the use of discrete Fourier series, discrete Fourier transforms, and their extension, the Z-transform. On making the transition to continuous systems we derive their continuous analogues, viz., Fourier series, Fourier transforms, Fourier integrals and Laplace transforms. A main advantage to the approach taken is that a wide variety of techniques are seen to result from one or two very simple but central ideas. Above all, this course is intended as being one which gives the student a "can-do" frame of mind about mathematics. Students should be given confidence in using mathematics and not be made fearful of it. I have, therefore, forgone the theorem-proof format for a more informal style. Finally, a concerted effort was made to present an assortment of examples from diverse applications with the hope of attracting the interest of the student, and an equally dedicated effort was made to be kind to the reader."
