Content: " Read John Berendt's Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil in Large Print. All Random House Large Print editions are published in a 16-point typeface Shots rang out in Savannah's grandest mansion in the misty, early morning hours of May 2, 1981. Was it murder or self-defense? For nearly a decade, the shooting and its aftermath reverberated throughout this hauntingly beautiful city of moss-hung oaks and shaded squares. John Berendt's sharply observed, suspenseful, and witty narrative reads like a thoroughly engrossing novel, and yet it is a work of nonfiction. Berendt skillfully interweaves a hugely entertaining first-person account of life in this isolated remnant of the Old South with the unpredictable twists and turns of a landmark murder case. It is a spellbinding story peopled by a gallery of remarkable characters: the well-bred society ladies of the Married Woman's Card Club, the turbulent young redneck gigolo, the hapless recluse who owns a bottle of poison so powerful it could kill every man, woman, and child in Savannah, the aging and profane Southern belle who is the soul of pampered self-absorption,the uproariously funny black drag queen, the acerbic and arrogant antiques dealer, the sweet-talking, piano-playing con artist, young blacks dancing the minuet at the black debutante ball, and Minerva, the voodoo priestess who works her magic in the graveyard at midnight. These and other Savannahians act as a Greek chorus, with Berendt revealing the alliances, hostilities, and intrigues that thrive in a town where everyone knows everyone else. Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil: A Savannah Story is a sublime and seductive reading experience. Brilliantly conceived and masterfully written, this enormously engaging portrait of a most beguiling Southern city is certain to become a modern classic. From the Trade Paperback edition. "
Content: Rezension(1): "The son of two writers, John Berendt grew up in Syracuse, New York. He earned a B.A. in English from Harvard University, where he worked on the staff of The Harvard Lampoon. After graduating in 1961, he moved to New York City to pursue a career in publishing. Berendt has written for David Frost and Dick Cavett, was editor of New York magazine from 1977 to 1979, and wrote a monthly column for Esquire from 1982 to 1994. Berendt first traveled to Savannah in the early 1980s, when he realized that he could fly there for a three-day weekend for the price of a paillard of veal served on a bed of wilted radicchio [p. 24] in one of New York's trendier restaurants. Over the ensuing eight years his visits became more frequent and extended, until he was spending more time in Savannah than in New York. Part of the appeal, Berendt says, lay in the city's penchant for morbid gossip: People in Savannah don't say, 'Before leaving the room, Mrs. Jones put on her coat.' Instead, they say, 'Before leaving the room, Mrs. Jones put on the coat that her third husband gave her before he shot himself in the head. ( Entertainment Weekly , 3/11/94, p. 52) Since the publication and unprecedented success of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil , Berendt has become a Savannah celebrity and was even presented with the key to the city. I took it down to City Hall one night to see if it would work, but it didn't. ( Syracuse Post Standard , 4/5/1994)" Rezension(2): " The New York Times Book Review : Elegant and wicked Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil might be the first true-crime book that makes the reader want to book a bed and breakfast for an extended weekend at the scene of the crime." Rezension(3): "〈a href=http://www.publishersweekly.com target=blank〉〈img src=https://images.contentreserve.com/pw_logo.png alt=Publisher's Weekly border=0 /〉〈/a〉: January 10, 1994 After discovering in the early 1980s that a super-saver fare to Savannah, Ga., cost the same as an entree in a nouvelle Manhattan restaurant, Esquire columnist Berendt spent the next eight years flitting between Savannah and New York City. The result is this collection of smart, sympathetic observations about his colorful Southern neighbors, including a jazz-playing real estate shark,a sexually adventurous art student, the Lady Chablis (` ``What was your name before that?',#39,I asked. ``Frank,',#39,she said.',',#39,,the gossipy Married Woman', Card Club, and an assortment of aging Southern belles. The book is also about the wealthy international antiques dealer Jim Williams, who played an active role in the historic city', restoration--and would also be tried four times for the 1981 shooting death of 21-year-old Danny Handsford, his high-energy, self-destructive house helper. The Williams trials--he died in 1990 of a heart attack at age 59--are lively matches between dueling attorneys fought with shifting evidence, and they serve as both theme and anchor to Berendt', illuminating and captivating travelogue. Hopeless romantics will relish the euphoric agony of anticipation as they watch these fated lovers sort through their feelings. The wait for a return ticket to this exquisite kingdom is made bearable only by flipping to the front and repeating your first visit." [The] ending ensures a breathlessly awaited sequel." Rezension(9): "Publishers Weekly:In a heart-wrenching novel based in Islamic texts and Persian poem the Shahnameh, Mafi complements rich worldbuilding with lushly descriptive, sensorial prose that inspires the novel's mythological backdrop, against which plays out an emotional plot, and a tortured romance, layered with court intrigue. " Rezension(10): "〈a href=http://www.kirkusreviews.com target=blank〉〈img src=https://images.contentreserve.com/kirkus_logo.png alt=Kirkus border=0 /〉〈/a〉: December 1, 2021 Magic, political intrigue, and forbidden love collide in Mafi's tale inspired by Islamic tradition and the Persian epic poem the Shahnameh. Ever since the fall of Iblees, a Jinn and being of fire who rebelled against God's creation of humans, all Jinn-kind have been forsaken by a universe that bore witness to the fall of their civilization and humanity's inheritance of the world. Though the kingdom of Ardunia's Fire Accords established a tenuous peace between the two races, ingrained hatred for those associated with the devil resulted in the exploitation of Jinn and curtailing of their abilities. Alizeh, a Jinn working as a servant in a noble house, hopes for a reprieve from her state of destitution, grief over her parents' deaths, and flight from constant persecution. Because in addition to being Jinn, ice also runs through Alizeh's blood, marking her as the heir to a lost kingdom whose power will lead to the unification and liberation of her people. When Prince Kamran discovers Alizeh, he cannot deny his attraction to her, even as her very existence threatens his grandfather, the king, the continuity of Ardunia, and perhaps humanity itself. Alizeh agonizes over her own feelings for the prince and the implications of the prophecy while she navigates between those who see her as an enemy and those who wish to use her. Richly textured, descriptive prose coupled with agonizing romance combine in this fantastical epic. Gut-wrenchingly beautiful. Alizeh is an orphaned servant who keeps to the shadows and tries to avoid drawing attention to herself. She is a jinn, and even though there is a truce between the jinn and the clay, that doesn't mean that she is safe from violence. In the palace across the city lives Crown Prince Kamran, who spends his time dedicated to the empire and aspiring to be a ruler like his grandfather. When their worlds collide, both Alizeh and Kamran must accept truths that will affect their futures and that put them on opposing sides. Captivating readers from the very first chapter, this story features sympathetic characters who are just trying to meet expectations. Fans of slower-paced fantasies will appreciate Mafi's deliberate unfurling of the world and her characters, all leading to an explosive ending. A magnetic series opener that will delight fans of Mafi's previous series. COPYRIGHT(2021) Booklist, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. Though accords eventually put an end to eons of bloodshed between Jinn and humankind, the Jinn nevertheless continue to face constant persecution, and use of their fiery powers carries the death penalty. Against this backdrop, olive-skinned 18-year-old Alizeh toils as a servant at a duchess’s estate following her parent’s death. Soon, she encounters Kamran, Ardunia’s crown prince, also 18 and olive skinned. Though Alizeh’s blood carries the ice that marks her as heir to an ancient kingdom that could destroy his own, he finds that he cannot forget her—setting the stage for a violent upheaval of not just his life, but of the land itself. In a heart-wrenching novel based in Islamic texts and Persian poem the Shahnameh, Mafi ( An Emotion of Great Delight ) complements rich worldbuilding with lushly descriptive, sensorial prose that inspires the novel’s mythological backdrop, against which plays out an emotional plot, and a tortured romance, layered with court intrigue.
