Content: "Photographs play a hugely influential, but largely unexamined role in the practice of landscape architecture and design. Through a diverse set of essays and case studies, this seminal text unpacks the complex relationship between landscape architecture and photography. It explores the influence of photographic seeing on the design process, by presenting theoretical concepts from photography, philosophy and cultural theory through the lens of landscape architecture practice to create a rigorous, open discussion. Beautifully illustrated in full color throughout, with over 200 images, subjects covered include the diversity of everyday photographic practices for design decision making, the perception of landscape architecture through photography, transcending the objective and subjective with photography, and deploying multiplicity in photographic representation as a means to better represent the complexity of the discipline. Rather than solving problems and providing tidy solutions to the ubiquitous relationship between photography and landscape architecture, this book aims to invigorate a wider dialogue about how photography influences how landscapes are understood, valued and designed. Active photographic practices are presented throughout for professionals, academics, students and researchers"--

Content: "The museum sector has a moral obligation to use its collections and exhibitions and other events to explore some of the inequalities wrought by global warming. The book tackles the broad global issue of climate change through specific collections and in local places. It reflects the Pacific community at its core, but also embraces many other communities who will experience the adverse effects of climate change sooner or later. The book is rich with practical museum experience and detail, as well as critical, analytical and philosophical about where a museum can intervene to speak to this great conundrum of our times"...Provided by publisher

Content: "Nearly 80 million desks and bookshelves worldwide boast a member of the distinguished family of Webster's New World dictionaries. From the New York Times to the Los Angeles Times, most major newspapers have adopted the College Edition as their standard first-reference resource. So have the Associated Press and United Press International. The professionals know that when you need to get the words rights the first time, every time, you need Webster's New World Dictionary." "But this is much more than the most useful, readable, and accurate desk dictionary you can find. Ever since the first edition was published more than forty years ago, the Webster's New World staff has been dedicated to presenting the English language not merely as it is but also as it has evolved. In these pages you will find more up-to-date, in-depth etymologies than in any other American dictionary, tracing our current vocabulary back to its rich and varied sources. Definitions are presented in modified historical order, illuminating the process by which the language grows and changes. More than 11,000 Americanisms are clearly marked, illustrating the astonishing inventiveness of our diverse culture. Every entry offers new and fascinating perspectives on the language that we share, because the Webster's New World Dictionary has always sought to record the English language, not restrict it."
Content: "Webster's New World Dictionary is a precise reference tool carefully created to meet the needs of the most demanding user. Definitions are accurately written to convey the most up-to-date information in a user-friendly, easily understood style. Commonly used foreign expressions that should be italicized are clearly identified; and an innovative feature is a syllabification system that distinguishes between preferred word breaks for line-end hyphenation and possible but less desirable breaks. In this updated edition, new entries map the frontiers of English in an era of unparalleled diversity and rapid development, while more than 150,000 entries ensure that you'll find the word you're looking for...and a great deal more." "In today's information age, in which clarity of expression and understanding are at a premium, and the ability to communicate crisply and accurately becomes more important every day, a high-quality desk dictionary is absolutely essential. Webster's New World Dictionary, Third College Edition, is such a dictionary."--BOOK JACKET

Note: At the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg, South Africa, visitors confront the past upon arrival. They must decide whether to enter the museum through a door marked whites" or another marked non-whites." Inside, along with text, they encounter hanging nooses and other reminders of apartheid-era atrocities. In the United States, museum exhibitions about racial violence and segregation are mostly confined to black history museums, with national history museums sidelining such difficult material. Even the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture is dedicated not to violent histories of racial domination but to a more generalized narrative about black identity and culture. The scale at which violent racial pasts have been incorporated into South African national historical narratives is lacking in the U.S. Desegregating the Past considers why this is the case, tracking the production and display of historical representations of racial pasts at museums in both countries and what it reveals about underlying social anxieties, unsettled emotions, and aspirations surrounding contemporary social fault lines around race. Robyn Autry consults museum archives, conducts interviews with staff, and recounts the public and private battles fought over the creation and content of history museums. Despite vast differences in the development of South African and U.S. society, Autry finds a common set of ideological, political, economic, and institutional dilemmas arising out of the selective reconstruction of the past. Museums have played a major role in shaping public memory, at times recognizing and at other times blurring the ongoing influence of historical crimes. The narratives museums produce to engage with difficult, violent histories expose present anxieties concerning identity, (mis)recognition, and ongoing conflict
