Kulturellen, ethnischen und religiösen Hindernissen zum Trotz heirateten sie heimlich, flohen und wurden zu Idolen junger Afghanen, durch kurzzeitige Medienaufmerksamkeit im eigenen Land sowie die kontinuierliche Berichterstattung des Autors in der "New York Times". Daraus erwuchsen Geldspenden - Überlebensmittel in einer korrupten Gesellschaft. Selbst Analphabeten, ohne Internetkenntnis und nur eingeschränkt mit der Handynutzung vertraut, bemerkte das "junge und oft töricht agierende Liebespaar" aber wenig von seiner Bekanntheit. Nordland dokumentiert beider Geschichte, schildert beispielreich, sachlich und eindringlich afghanische Mentalität, kulturelle Normen und soziale Ordnung, die das Land zum "schlimmsten und gefährlichsten Ort der Welt für Frauen" machen (Hörbuch-Rezension: ID-A 25/16).     Content: US-Professor Strogatz hat für die "New York Times" eine Kolumne über Mathematik geschrieben, die nun - ergänzt und vermehrt - als Buch vorliegt. Der deutsche Verlag mochte sich die Anspielung auf "The Joy of Sex" nicht entgehen lassen und behielt den Originaltitel bei. Dem Verfasser gelingt es, seine profunden Kenntnisse auch unkundigen Lesern so zu vermitteln, dass sie Zusammenhänge mathematischer Formeln verstehen und begreifen, worum es z.B. in der Differenzial- und Integralrechnung eigentlich geht und wo sie in der Praxis benutzt wird. Das wird aber erst in späteren Kapiteln erläutert. Vorher geht es etwa um die geometrisch-bildhaft gezeigte Lösung einer quadratischen Gleichung, um Logarithmen, Exponentialfunktionen, Primzahlen und vieles andere. Strogatz fordert wenig vom Leser, nur gelegentlich hält er ein Ergebnis zurück, ermuntert ihn, selbst nachzudenken und weist auf den umfangreichen Anmerkungsteil hin, der dann weitere Hinweise und auch Quellenangaben enthält. Viele gut gewählte Zeichnungen sind ebenfalls hilfreich. - Ein angenehmer und erfreulicher Rundgang durch die Mathematik. (2 S)
    Content: Dem Leser werden in 30 kurzen Kapiteln Zusammenhänge mathematischer Formeln erläutert. Er erkennt, was es mit Pi, e oder i auf sich hat und worum es bei Themen wie Gruppentheorie oder Integralrechnung eigentlich geht und wo sie in der Praxis eingesetzt werden.
