Content: Albert O. Hirschman is renowned world-wide for theories that have been at the forefront of political economics during the last half century. In these twenty essays he casts his sharp analytical eye on his own ideas, questioning and qualifying some of his major propositions on social change and economic development. Hirschman's self-subversion, as well as the self-affirmation that is also present here, reveal the workings of a distinguished mind. They also bring us fresh perspective on the material in his twelve previous books and countless essays
Content: In the substantial essays that open this collection, Hirschman reappraises points he made in such books as Exit, Voice, and Loyalty, The Strategy of Economic Development, and the Rhetoric of Reaction. Subsequent essays fruitfully reexplore the themes of Latin American development and market society that have occupied him throughout his career. Hirschman also forays into new puzzles, such as the likely impact, negative or otherwise, of the Eastern European revolutions of 1989 on the Third World, the on-and-off connections between political and economic progress, and the role of conflict in enhancing community spirit in a liberal democracy

Content: ""A beautiful, fiercely honest, and nevertheless deeply empathetic look at those who police the border and the migrants who risk - and lose - their lives crossing it. In a time of often ill-informed or downright deceitful political rhetoric, this book is an invaluable corrective."...Phil Klay For Francisco Cantú the border is in the blood: his mother, a park ranger and daughter of a Mexican immigrant, raised him in the scrublands of the Southwest. Haunted by the landscape of his youth, Cantú joins the Border Patrol. He and his partners are posted to remote regions crisscrossed by drug routes and smuggling corridors, where they learn to track other humans under blistering sun and through frigid nights. They haul in the dead and deliver to detention those they find alive. Cantú tries not to think where the stories go from there. Plagued by nightmares, he abandons the Patrol for civilian life. But when an immigrant friend travels to Mexico to visit his dying mother and does not return, Cantú discovers that the border has migrated with him, and now he must know the whole story. Searing and unforgettable, The Line Becomes a River makes urgent and personal the violence our border wreaks on both sides of the line"...
Content: "A former Border Patrol agent's haunting experience of an unnatural divide and the lives caught on either side, struggling to cross or to defend it"...

Content: A self-appointed "genius," Salvador Dali (1904-1989) represents one of the most original, controversial and profoundly subversive phenomena in contemporary Western culture. This study focuses on the artist's autobiographical writings - particularly on The Secret Life of Salvador Dali (1942) - proposing that without a notion of fantasy and identification, we are unable either to understand Dali's own subjective movements in the memoirs or what he has come to represent for us
Content: The Apocryphal Subject is the first book to adopt a poststructuralist perspective for the study of Dali's writings, offering new insights on, for example, the artist's attachments to Federico G. Lorca and his wife Gala
Content: The book draws extensively upon current debates in deconstructive and psychoanalytic criticism (particularly on the themes of homosexuality, masochism, abjection and paranoia), showing how no writer demonstrates more forcefully than Dali the irreducible contradictions and plurality of desires which constitute our contemporary postmodern identities

-- Back cover
Content: The difference between this autobiography and others like El pez en el agua /A Fish in the Water is that this book's leading role is not necessarily the author's experiences, but rather the literature that shaped his way of thinking and his way of seeing the world in the last fifty years. The Peruvian Nobel laureate creates a roadmap of the liberal thinkers that helped him develop a new set of ideas after the great ideological disappointment that was, on the one hand, his disenchantment with the Cuban Revolution and, on the other, a distancing of sorts from an author who had greatly inspired him in his youth, Jean-Paul Sartre. The authors which he analyzes are Adam Smith, Jose Ortega y Gasset, Friedrich Hayek, Karl Popper, Raymond Aron, Isaiah Berlin and Jean-Fraçois Revel, who were of great help during those disconcerting years, showing him a new train of thought which gave the individual more power than the "tribe", the nation, the class or the party, and that defended freedom of expression as a fundamental value for democracy. -- Provided by publisher
