Series Statement: Transformations: thinking through feminism
Content: Strange encounters examining the relationship between strangers, embodiment and community, Strange Encounters challenges the assumptions that the stranger is simply anybody we do not recognize and instead proposes that he or she is socially constructued as somebody we already know. Using feminist and postcolonial theory this book examines the impact of multiculturalism and globalization on embodiment and community whilst considering the ethical and political implication of its critique for post-colonial feminism. A diverse range of texts are analyzed which produce the figure of 'the stranger', showing that it has alternatively been expelled as the origin of danger - such as in neighbourhood watch, or celebrated as the origin of difference - as in multiculturalism. The author argues that both of these standpoints are problematic as they involve 'stranger fetishism'; they assume that the stranger 'has a life of its own'. While the time coverage is vast (from 800 B.C. to the 1980s) and there is good historical depth, the focus is primarily on rural Greek society in the latter half of the 20th century, particularly in the mainland regions of Boeotia, Piraeus, Kokinia, Zagor, Epiros, and central Macedonia and the major Aegean or Greek islands of Crete, Rhodes, Lesbos, and the Cyclades (Tinos, Anafi). Also included are comprehensive studies on the Sarakatsani nomads of the Zagori, Epirus, Thessaly, and central Greece regions. Several documents deal with the city of Athens

Content: "This new analysis explores the social history and politics of 'mega-events' from the late nineteenth century to the present. Through case studies of mega-events such as the 1851 Crystal Palace expo, the 1936 Berlin Olympics and the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, Maurice Roche investigates the impact expos and Olympics have had on national identities, on the marking of public time and space, and on versions of national citizenship and international society in modern times." "Roche argues that mega-events provide power elites with 'flagships' and catalysts to promote their visions of society and of the future, but that they also provide ordinary people with opportunities to connect with and affirm or contest collective identities."--BOOK JACKET.

Content: The Mentawaians live on the Mentawai archipelago that forms part of a chain of non-volcanic islands running parallel to Sumatra, Indonesia. There are four large islands in the group: Siberut, Sipora, and North and South Pagai. This file consists of 14 documents, 13 in English and one in German. These works deal with the ethnography of the inhabitants of the North and South Pagai Islands, the Sakalagan or "people of the village", as well as the Sakalelegan or Sakoban of Sipora, and the Sakkudei (Sakuddei) people of Siberut. Loeb, Nooy-Palm, Wallace, and Crisp all focus their ethnographic works on the Pagai Islands and Sipora, while Schefold concentrates his studies on Siberut Island and the Sakkudei (Sakuddei) people
