Friedrich Weinbrenner is the prototype among German Neo-Classical architects, but also quite a controversial personality: state architect, founder of a modern school of architecture in Karlsruhe, idealised or scandalised by later generations.

They are from the pens of those who created Berlin as one of the world's great cities and those who observed this process: architects, city planners, sociologists, political theorists, historians, cultural critics, novelists, essayists, and journalists. Divided into nineteen sections, each prefaced by an introductory essay, the account unfolds chronologically, with the particular structural concerns of the moment addressed in sequence--be they department stores in 1900, housing in the 1920s, or parade grounds in 1940. Metropolis Berlin: 1880-1940 not only details the construction of Berlin, but explores homes and workplaces, public spaces, circulation, commerce, and leisure in the German metropolis as seen through the eyes of all social classes, from the humblest inhabitants of the city slums, to the great visionaries of the modern city, and the demented dictator resolved to remodel Berlin as Germania"-- Provided by publisher. -- "Metropolis Berlin 1880-1940 reconstitutes the built environment of Berlin during the period of its classical modernity using over two hundred contemporary texts, virtually all of which are published in English translation for the first time. Content: 〈p〉When talking about monuments, size undeniably matters - or does it? But how else can we measure monumentality? Bringing together researchers from various fields such as archaeology, museology, history, sociology, Mesoamerican studies, and art history, this book discusses terminological and methodological approaches in both theoretical contributions and various case studies. While focusing on architectural aspects, this volume also discusses the social meaning of monuments, the role of forced and free labour, as well as textual or inscriptual monumentality. The result is a modern interdisciplinary take on an important concept which is notoriously difficult to define.〈/p〉

Content: "An overview of over 100 pedoagogical experiments in the field of architecture over the years and throughout the world"--
Content: In the decades after World War II, new forms of learning transformed architectural education. These radical experiments sought to upend disciplinary foundations and conventional assumptions about the nature of architecture as much as they challenged modernist and colonial norms, decentered building, imagined new roles for the architect, and envisioned participatory forms of practice. Although many of the experimental programs were subsequently abandoned, terminated, or assimilated, they nevertheless helped shape and in some sense define architectural discourse and practice. This book explores and documents these radical pedagogies and efforts to defy architecture's status quo. The experiments include the adaptation of Bauhaus pedagogy as a means of "unlearning" under the conditions of decolonization in Africa; a movement to design for "every body," including the disabled, by architecture students and faculty at the University of California, Berkeley; the founding of a support network for women interested in the built environment, regardless of their academic backgrounds; and a design studio in the USSR that offered an alternative to the widespread functionalist approach in Soviet design. Viewed through their dissolution and afterlife as well as through their founding stories, these projects from the last century raise provocative questions about architecture's role in the new century.

Content: his book is about climate and architecture. Written by the Swiss architect Philippe Rahm, it is at the same time a monograph on the architectural, urbanistic and landscape work of the office "Philippe Rahm architectes", a manifesto for a climatic architecture to face global warming, and a theoretical and practical treatise on the art of building atmospheres. Architecture and urbanism were traditionally based on climate and health, as we can read in treatises of Vitruvius, Palladio or Alberti, where exposure to wind and sun, variations in temperature and humidity influenced the forms of cities and buildings. These fundamental causes of urban planning and buildings were ignored in the second half of the 20th century thanks to the enormous use of fossil energy by heating and air conditioning systems, pumps and refrigerators, that today cause the greenhouse effect and global warming. The fight against climate change forces the architects and urban designer to take back seriously the climatic issue in order to base their design on more consideration to the local climatic context and energy resources. Faced with the climatic challenge of the 21st century, we propose to reset our discipline on its intrinsic atmospheric qualities, where air, light, heat or humidity are recognized are real materials of building, convection, thermal conduction, evaporation, emissivity, or effusivity are becoming design tools for composing architecture and cities, and through materialism dialectic, are able to revolutionize esthetic and social values.
Note: Because the building sector is responsible for 39% of global CO2 emissions, global warming imposes on architecture a climatic purpose, which involves considering energy, thermal and aeraulic issues in the design and choice of architectural forms and materials, in order to initially reduce the consumption of fossil fuels and thus limit greenhouse gas emissions. If this purpose is new, because it appeared at the end of the twentieth century, motivated by the climate emergency, putting an end to the immoderate use of coal, gas and oil, which was done during the twentieth century, the climate issue is actually at the origin of the appearance of architecture, its fundamental cause. The raison d'être of architecture is climatic. The architect must draw climates rather than geometric forms. Architecture is a meteorological formalization. Architecture is the art of building climates.

Content: "Activism at Home offers a unique study of architects’ own dwellings purposely designed to express social, political, economic, and cultural critiques. Through thirty case studies by architectural scholars, this book highlights different forms of activism at home from the early twentieth century to today. The architect-led experiments in activist living discussed in this book include the dwellings of Ralph Erskine, Paulo Mendes Da Rocha, Charles Moore, Flora Ruchat-Roncati, and Kiyoshi Seike, as well as many others.
Offering candid appraisals of alternative living solutions that formulate a response to rising real estate prices, economic inequality, social alienation, and mounting environmental and cultural challenges, Activism at Home is more than a historical study; it is an appeal to architects to use the discipline’s tools to their full potential, and a plea to scholars to continue to bring into focus architecture’s activist practices—whether at home or elsewhere."

Content: Architecture has high cultural and socio-political relevance. As a visual and kinesthetic medium, it structures not only space, but also orders of knowledge and modes of perception. Yet how can this be scientifically described or investigated? This volume provides a comprehensive reflection on architecture from a transdisciplinary perspective. It brings together a number of recent approaches from philosophy, sociology, media, culture, art, film, literature, dance, and musicology, which address the cultural significance of architecture from the perspective of their own respective discipline

Content: This architectural guide brings together 100 of the most original structures built in New York City since 1999. Vladimir Belogolovsky pairs them with such nicknames as Guillotine, Peacock, Shark's Fin, Turtle Shell, and Woodpecker. The New York-based author's selection covers buildings realized by the world's most renowned architects during a period when their creations were celebrated as art and personal styles were encouraged by the media, critics and clients. The featured time span begins with the rise of the starchitect in the late 1990s, and ends in the present day. But the mission of the book is not only to document; it is also to celebrate New York's transformative energy. Many of the buildings were designed either by foreign architects or those who settled in the city and now call it home. Through witty, incisive commentary, catchy nicknames, quotes from the author's interviews with the architects, and detailed maps, this singular guide allows readers to see many of New York's contemporary icons in a new way.

Content: In 1960 and 1961, a group of young Indonesians completed their studies in Berlin and Hanover with a degree in architecture (Diplom-Ingenieur Architektur; in Indonesian: Dipl.-Ing. Arsitek). Most of these graduates returned to Indonesia. At that time, the country sought independent forms of built expression to represent a modern civil society with contemporary structures that would reflect the culture and accommodate the climate. During this highly dynamic period, those who returned soon became influential architects in their homeland. Around a third of the graduates remained in Europe, where they pursued successful architectural careers in Germany, Switzerland, or the Netherlands. Using the final diploma projects of ten of those students as a starting point, Dipl.-Ing. Arsitek: German-trained Indonesian Architects from the 1960s provides multifaceted insights into this little-known aspect of German-Indonesian relations. Many of the cited plans and documents come from the architects’ personal archives and are now available to the public for the first time. Fifteen exemplary buildings are documented in their current context in new photographs produced for this project, highlighting their unique characteristics and qualities.

Content: We take the built environment for granted; yet we create worlds of meaning through the buildings we construct. Architecture is a powerful medium for representing, ordering and classifying the world. For over a decade archaeologists have been using concepts of the symbolic use of space, but until now there has been no single study of this field, or its interaction with architecture and anthropology. Architecture and Order draws together the work of anthropologists, psychologists, social theorists, architects and archaeologists to explore people's relationships with their architecture. In many societies, houses and tombs have encoded cultural meanings and values which are invoked and recalled through the practices of daily and ritual life. Case studies include the early farming communities of Europe, from before the use of metals, to the Classical and medieval worlds of the Mediterranean and Europe. Studies of the recent past and present include an overview of hunter-gatherers' camp organisation, a reassessment of the use of space amongst the Dogon of West Africa and an examination of mental disorders relating to the use of space in Britain. The book goes beyond the implication that culture determines form to develop an approach which integrates meaning and practice. Architecture and Order is a new approach to the examination of archaeological evidence. It will be essential reading for students of archaeology, anthropology and cultural studies, and will also appeal to students of history and psychology.
