    Content: In What Is Called Thinking? Martin Heidegger wrote, "Man speaks by being silent." Berel Lang shows in this penetrating book how Heidegger's own silence on the "Jewish Question" - how (or if) the Jews were to live among the nations - constituted a deliberate and direct "speaking." The significance of the Jewish Question which gained currency in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries was radically altered by the Holocaust. Lang argues, however, that Heidegger's post-Holocaust silence had its grounds in his earlier silence on the Jewish Question - itself based on the conceptual and historical role Heidegger ascribed to the Volk, in particular to the German Volk. Heidegger's enduring silence, Lang concludes, was thus more than an expression of prejudice or of public rhetoric. As an element of his philosophical position, it remains a necessary consideration in understanding and assessing Heidegger as thinker. In this way, Heidegger's silence still speaks.

    Content: When the French Revolution promised the citizens of France liberty and equality, the Jews were not excluded. The Jews enjoyed full rights of citizenship in France long before they did in other countries, such as Germany or England. In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries there were Jews in the highest ranks of the French civil service and government, and in 1936 Leon Blum became prime minister. Such men as Blum and, later, Pierre Mendes France, were known as Juifs d'Etat ('state Jews'). But with their rise to power came a new form of anti-Semitism. To the traditional vilification of the Jew as a wanderer, a sexual deviant and a usurer, was added the myth of the double-dealing statesman--one who used political power and position to undermine the strength and strip away the wealth of the true France ('la vraie France eternelle'). Such views predated the Dreyfus case, became acute under the Vichy regime, and persist today, as recent incidents of political and social anti-Semitism in France show so clearly. Pierre Birnbaum here provides an account of the origins, history and effects of anti-Semitism. He refers to and quotes from original source material, much of it previously unknown, and uses press reports, interviews and scurrilous verses to illustrate his theme--that there is a cancer at the heart of French society which has not yet been fully excised.

    Content: For over a century, Jews have been identified with liberalism. Not only have they been a driving force behind the spread of liberal politics; they have also been steadfastly loyal to a doctrine that promised them both safety and political acceptance. Recent evidence suggests that their commitment has not waned. But while Jews continue to stand up for other groups and "vote their conscience," contends Ruth Wisse, the liberal commitment to the Jews is not nearly so strong. Whenever Jews have been attacked - from the trial of Captain Dreyfus to the sustained military and political war against Israel - liberals have been slow to defend Jewish rights and have preferred instead to hold the Jews responsible for the persistence of their enemies. The explanation for this liberal default, Wisse argues, is the survival and success of anti-Semitism
    Content: This irrational idea continues to flourish throughout the world, despite the destruction of the fascist and communist regimes that were its deadliest twentieth-century allies. Wisse points out that anti-Semitism's astonishing resilience has put liberals - including liberal Jews - in an impossible position. The only reasonable response to such a doctrine, Wisse insists, is not appeasement or avoidance, but steadfast confrontation and rejection. Yet such opposition is alien to liberal ideas of open-mindedness and strikes many as intolerant. Unwilling to suspend their optimistic view of man as a benevolent and rational being in order to combat a mortal enemy, most liberals - including many Jews - conclude that Jews themselves must be responsible for the continuing wars against them - thus implicitly condoning their sacrifice
    Content: Wisse's book, inspired by a friend's emigration to Israel, traces the Jewish romance with liberalism from its discovery by Jewish integrationists and Zionists to the acceptance today by many Jews of a moral equivalence between Zionism and the war against it. She also explores, among the many contradictions of modern Jewish politics, the ambiguous question of Jewish "chosenness," and the Jewish longing for acceptance in a larger human family; the successful Arab war of ideas against Israel; and the dilemma of Jewish writers and intellectuals who wish to transcend their parochializing siege. Above all, she shows how and why anti-Semitism became the twentieth century's most successful ideology and reveals what people in liberal democracies would have to do to prevent it from once again achieving its goal
