Content: As the frequency of hemodialysis sessions has always been a concern, it is not astonishing that interest in quotidian (daily) hemodialysis appears to be growing worldwide. The main reasons for more frequent dialysis are to maximize well-being and minimize both intra- and interdialytic symptoms, as well as to improve the treatment of patients with severe underlying medical problems, particularly cardiovascular disease. Moreover, studies also indicate overall potential cost savings as compared with current conventional hemodialysis. There are two options available, namely short daily and long nightly treatments. The main difference centers on the ability of the nightly regimen to remove greater amounts of phosphate and beta-2-microglobulin. Even so, there is no doubt that both treatments are highly preferable to conventional three times weekly dialysis. Further issues which are discussed include the requirements necessary to run dialysis programs, vascular access requirements, and the management of complications and risks such as calcium and phosphorus control. This is the first publication devoted solely to daily hemodialysis therapies: Concentrating on clinical and technical issues, it is an important contribution to the practical development of daily hemodialysis and is highly recommended to nephrologists, nurses, managers of renal programs and others involved in renal care
Note: a practical approach concentrating on clinical and technical issues

Content: The novel discipline of proteomics has experienced a rapid growth in the recent past and has a great potential for the future. Involving several fields, it offers various advantages: The study of proteins on a genomic scale allows to examine a large number of them simultaneously. Moreover, proteomic analysis provides information about post-translational modifications and functions of gene products or proteins that cannot be obtained by genomic analysis. The knowledge thus gained is also important for a better understanding of renal physiology and pathophysiology, to identify disease biomarkers, and to develop new target therapies. This book is the first one that applies the science of proteomics to nephrology: It sets out to give an overview of the discipline, providing detailed background information and outlining scope, advantages, and limitations of proteomics. The second section reviews principles of commonly used proteomic techniques, including sample preparation, two-dimensional gel electrophoresis, various types of mass spectrometry, expression proteomics, quantitative proteomics, practical bioinformatics, and clinical proteomics. In the last section, examples and perspectives are provided of how proteomics can be applied to various fields in nephrology, including nephrotoxicity, sodium transport, diabetic nephropathy, renal Fanconi syndrome, IgA nephropathy, physiology of podocytes and mesangial cells, hypertension, urological malignancies, and dialysis. The publication ends with a discussion of biomarker discovery in glomerular diseases and drug discovery.Written by acclaimed experts in both proteomics and nephrology, this truly remarkable book is essential reading for students, residents, fellows, scientists, and nephrologists who are interested in or devoted to research, as well as for general health professionals and clinicians

Series Statement: Pediatric and adolescent medicine Vol. 9
Content: Obesity in childhood and adolescence has reached epidemic proportions in all industrialized countries around the world. Its impact on individual lives as well as on health economics has to be recognized by physicians and the public alike. Among the most common consequences of obesity in the adolescent are hypertension, dyslipidemia, back pain and psychosocial problems. Therapeutic strategies include psychological and family therapy, lifestyle/behavior modification and nutrition education. The role of regular exercise and exercise programs is emphasized. Surgical procedures and drugs used in adult obesity are still not generally recommended for obese adolescents. This book aims to increase physicians' knowledge and understanding of obesity in childhood and adolescence as well as to further public awareness of the health burden and economic dimension of obesity at a young age. Several chapters deliver insights into the basic understanding of which factors contribute to or prevent the development of overweight and obesity in young people. Other contributions provide tools for the clinician to manage the care of the child and adolescent with overweight/obesity. In addition, knowledge from the latest scientific studies on the molecular biology of obesity is also presented

Content: Pheochromocytomas are rare, mostly benign tumors of the adrenal medulla whose symptoms are caused by a tumor-induced secretion of catecholamines. This book provides an overview of current knowledge on the clinical situation, diagnosis and therapy of the disease as well as an extensive discussion of novel aspects in the molecular basis of this disease such as the recognition of new tools in molecular biology. The endocrine diagnosis is based on precise knowledge of tumor metabolism of catecholamines and their metabolites and today comprises laboratory methods with a high sensitivity and specificity. As approximately one quarter of these tumors arise in the context of a familial disease, such as multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2, von Hippel-Lindau syndrome, neurofibromatosis type 1 or familial paragangliomas, the genetic diagnosis is becoming increasingly relevant. Equally indispensable are imaging methods such as 123I-MIBG scintigraphy or octreotide scintigraphy, which can be employed as a complementary approach in e.g. malignant tumors. The surgical therapy is clearly based on the nature of the disease; in sporadic unilateral as well as familial bilateral pheochromocytoma a lateral endoscopic approach is chosen. The treatment of malignant pheochromocytoma is mainly based on the use of nuclear medical techniques and selected chemotherapeutic approaches. This book is essential reading for clinicians and scientists in the fields of endocrinology as well as oncology, surgery and nuclear medicine

Content: Recent developments have spurred a renewed interest in novel solutions to access the patient circulation, mainly concentrating on vascular access for renal replacement therapies and on peritoneal dialysis access.Starting with the epidemiology, the focus then shifts to the evolution of new techniques and monitoring procedures with regard to hemodialysis, which are discussed and evaluated. Attention is also paid to the new biomaterials available, concentrating on their improved biocompatibility and surface characteristics. As developments in the field of peritoneal dialysis have taken a similar turn, new devices providing access to the peritoneal cavity which have recently been made available are introduced next. Last but not least, the management of complications and the continuous maintenance and care of the access with regard to both hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis are highlighted. This book provides a complete overview of the devices, catheters and methods currently available to ensure successful vascular and peritoneal access. Taking into account both the physiology of the extracorporeal circulation and the mechanisms of peritoneal dialysis with regard to the most adequate access techniques, this is a unique resource for clinicians, investigators and researchers in the field of renal replacement therapy
