Inhalt: Made during the '68 crisis, this allegorical satire updates Swift (Gulliver's travels to Laputa and Balnibarbi) and Lewis Carroll, presenting an episodic account of the 35-year-old hero's nightmare journey to a world which he encounters on the other side of a road tunnel. No surprise to discover that it's very much like contemporary Czechoslovakia. Here is absurdity, transgression, jet-black comedy and the unexplained. Shot using graphic inserts, split images, slo-mo and fish-eye lenses, it recreates the mood of Kafka-esque paranoia that writer/director Jurácek had used more directly in his earlier "Joseph Kilián". Inhalt: Ende des 17. Jahrhunderts ruft eine Gräfin in Böhmen auf Veranlassung des Ortspfarrers einen Inquisitor, um vermeintliche Hexerei zu bekämpfen. Der eitle und besitzgierige Inquisitor weitet seine Herrschaft immer mehr aus und geht schließlich auch gegen jene vor, die ihn riefen. Verfilmung eines Romans über die letzten Hexenprozesse in den Jahren 1678-95 in Böhmen. Dem sehr sorgfältig gestalteten Film geht es mehr um die Schilderung der Zerstörung von Menschlichkeit als um Schock- und Thrillereffekte. Seine kritische Darstellung reflektiert darüber hinaus die jüngere Geschichte der CSSR (Stalins Säuberungen 1951, Slansky-Prozeß 1952). [Film-Dienst]
