In den frühen Morgenstunden des 13. August 1961, einem Sonntag, begannen bewaffnete Kräfte in Ost-Berlin damit, an der Grenze zu West-Berlin Stacheldrahtsperren aufzubauen und wenige Tage später inmitten Berlins eine erste Mauer zu errichten, die aus Betonplatten und Hohlblocksteinen bestand. Zugleich verstärkten die DDR-Verantwortlichen auf Weisung sowjetischer Militärs die Grenzsicherung an der Demarkationslinie (DL) zur Bundesrepublik und verlegten bald darauf die ersten Minenfelder. Bis zu diesem Sonntag im August 1961 hatten seit Gründung der DDR am 7. Oktober 1949 mehr als 2,5 Millionen Menschen das Land in Richtung Westen verlassen. Mit den Absperrmaßnahmen vom August 1961 und den Folgehandlungen sicherte die DDR ihr Überleben.
