Content: This study examines the relationship between Rousseau’s political thinking and the radical democracy connected with Claude Lefort. Using the history of ideas, it systematically reinterprets the common perception of this relationship as being irreconcilable in order to integrate Rousseau’s work into the context of radical democracy. It reconstructs the hegemonies of interpretation and discursive resistance which have been responsible for radical democracy remaining silent on Rousseau’s significance in order to fill this gap in research and to stimulate new ideas and further thinking on radical democracy. By doing so, this book does not present Rousseau as merely a forerunner of contemporary radical democratic thinking, but recognises his philosophy and criticism of culture as interventions that are genuinely related to radical democracy. It therefore refutes the common perception of Rousseau as a liberal or proto-totalitarian thinker.

Content: In this challenging work, Christopher Lasch makes his most accessible critique yet of what is wrong with the values and beliefs of America's professional and managerial elites. The distinguished historian argues that democracy today is threatened not by the masses, as Jose Ortega y Gasset (The Revolt of the Masses) had said, but by the elites. These elites - mobile and increasingly global in outlook - refuse to accept limits or ties to nation and place. Lasch contends that, as they isolate themselves in their networks and enclaves, they abandon the middle class, divide the nation, and betray the idea of a democracy for all America's citizens. The book is historical writing at its best, using the past to reveal the roots of our current dilemma. The author traces how meritocracy - selective elevation into the elite - gradually replaced the original American democratic ideal of competence and respect for every man. Among other cultural trends, he trenchantly criticizes the vogue for self-esteem over achievement as a false remedy for deeper social problems, and attacks the superior pseudoradicalism of the academic left. Brilliantly he reveals why it is no wonder that Americans are apathetic about their common culture and see no point in arguing politics or voting. In a powerful final section Lasch traces the spiritual crisis of democracy. The elites, having jettisoned the moral and ethical guidelines provided by religion, cling to the belief that through science they can master their fates and escape mortal limits. In pursuit of this illusion they have become infatuated with the global economy. Their revolt, the author warns, is diminishing what is worthwhile about American life. This volume, completed just before the author's death, continues in his tradition of vigorous and original thought and should stir soul-searching among readers concerned about the future of America and its democracy.

Content: The empowerment of right-wing movements in immigration countries creates increased tension in the society that is reflected in polarization and growing ambivalences: On the one side, these societies are based on values of plural democracy, which aims at equality for all citizens; on the other side, these trends that question this promise of equality enjoy growing popularity. Naika Foroutan shows that the line of conflict only seems to run along the positioning for or against migration. This is less about migration per se than about the processes of negotiation that occur after migration has become a political reality and hegemonic positions have been questioned

Content: The Human Right to Democracy is the first major study to offer a comprehensive and up-to-date account of the debate. It reconstructs the relevant positions in that debate, identifies the key points of disagreement, and proposes an understanding of the human right to democracy that might form the basis of a wide consensus. The book rejects the idea of a comprehensive right to democratic institutions, and instead argues for a minimal “human right to democracy” which is best understood as an individual’s right to voice. The human right to voice is a right, enjoyed by any individual independently of his or her place of residence or nationality, to be heard and supported in cases of severe injustice that is tolerated or condoned by the political community or polity of which the individual is a member. By bringing together human rights discourse and democratic theory, as well as taking into account practical politics, this study broadens the scope of the debatefrom a sometimes overly-narrow focus. The book is of interest not only to political philosophers, but also to international lawyers, diplomats, representatives of civil society, human rights activists, and specialists in development economics

Content: Marginalized persons are often not able to assert appropriately their basic political interests in public decision making processes of modern democratic society. Their interests are ‹weak› because the stakeholders haven’t the necessary power to articulate, organize, mobilize and achieve their goals in opposition to competing interests of stronger actors having sufficient political power. This structural dissymmetry of power between so called ‹weak› and ‹strong› interests dominates the culture of civil society actors (e.g. New Social Movements) struggling for the interests of marginalized people. This situation represents a serious burden for republican democracy. Republican democracy implies the egalitarian and emancipatory promise to all members of society that they can represent themselves authentically in political decision making and thereby achieve political justice. Therefore everyone’s real participation (especially real participation of marginalized persons) in politics becomes a litmus test for every republican democracy. Community Organizing is a specific approach to political action to enhance political powerfulness by creating personal relationship between marginalized people and their supporters and establishing broad based community organizations with the intention to transform ‹weak› interests into ‹stronger› or at best into ‹strong› interests.
