    ISBN: 1474226191 , 9781474226189 , 9781474226196
Inhalt: This book offers the first in-depth analysis of the relationship between art and design, which led to the creation of 'pop'. Challenging accepted boundaries and definitions, the authors seek out various commonalities and points of connection between these two exciting areas.Confronting the all-pervasive 'high art / low culture' divide, "Pop Art and Design" brings a fresh understanding of visual culture during the vibrant 1950's and 60's. This was an era when commercial art became graphic design, illustration was superseded by photography and high fashion became street fashion, all against the backdrop of a rapidly-evolving economic and political landscape, a glamorous youth scene and an effervescent popular culture. The book's central argument is that pop art relied on and drew inspiration from pop design, and vice versa. Massey and Seago assert that this relationship was articulated through the artwork, design, publications and exhibitions of a network of key practitioners. "Pop Art and Design "provides a case study in the broader inter-relationship between art and design, and constitutes the first interdisciplinary publication on the subject

-- "Bruno Taut (1880-1938) is considered the most important settlement architect of the modern age. With no fewer than 10,000 apartments, he decisively shaped the housing construction of his time by working with the latest architectural knowledge and at the same time making people the basis of his work. This updated and expanded new edition is a tribute to one of the most important personalities of the 20th century. It presents a comprehensive overview of Bruno Taut's work, including the famous 'horseshoe settlement' in Britz, the 'ink box settlement' called Garden City Falkenberg and the forest settlement 'Onkel Toms Hütte'. Each project is presented using texts, plans as well as historical and contemporary photographs. Proven connoisseurs guide the reader through Bruno Taut's work and show in numerous introductory essays that he was not just an urban planner, designer and social reformer, but above all an artist - and deserves it deeply for this, as the 'master of colored building' in this book to be recognized."
Inhalt: "Bruno Taut (1880-1938) is generally considered the leading housing estate architect of the modern era. Utilizing the latest architectural techniques and concentrating on the needs of the people who were to inhabit his buildings, he made a lasting impression on the housing construction of his time - which is not simply reflected by the 10,000 flats built by him. This revised and extended edition presents the extensive catalogue of Bruno Taut's works. Each project is portrayed by means of texts, plans as well as historic and contemporary photos. Proven experts lead the reader through the creative work and life of Bruno Taut in several introductory essays that show him not only as a city planner, designer and social reformer but above all as an artist who therefore truly deserves to be honored as the master of colourful architecture in Berlin."

Inhalt: "When the Berlin Wall fell in 1989, artists, punks, anarchists, squatters, visionaries, and oddballs discovered the no-man's-land behind it a practically lawless zone in the heart of the city. Unbridled creativity was unleashed in the free spaces among the crumbling façades of old buildings. A variety of clubs, bars, techno parties, galleries, uprisings, and exhibitions sprung up, among them the well-known institutions Tacheles and Schokoladen. These new spaces became a magnet for young people from around the world, who flocked to the burgeoning scene. These wild years may seem long past, but their effect is still palpable and has made Berlin into what it is today. The city's well-established reputation as a creative hotspot is partially grounded in the myths of the riotous 1990s. In its more than 200 photographs, Berlin Wonderland brings this unique time of upheaval, resistance, and rearrangement back to life. Looking at the sleek shops and buildings of Berlin's Mitte district today, it seems practically impossible that these photos were taken only 20 years ago. Yet that part of the city has indeed undergone radical change since then on streets where ruins and piles of rubble once stood, tourists now stroll in droves. Twenty-five years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, it is time to tell the visual story of an extraordinary time in the Mitte district's history that only few experienced. The striking photography in Berlin Wonderland is supplemented by interviews and quotes from those who shaped its subculture. Musician and photographer Chris Keller has lived in Berlin since 1990. He is a founding member of the Elektronauten and has lived and worked in spaces including Tacheles, IM Eimer, Synlabor, and Schokoladen. Today, he works on the music projects Resident Kafka and Elekronauten and puts on the Oddlab series held at the Club der polnischen Versager. Anke Fesel has also lived in Berlin since 1990. She managed a variety of events including Laut + Luise, a concert series for new music at spaces including Tacheles, IM Eimer, and Schokoladen. She started her career as a designer for the city newspaper scheinschlag. Today, she is the director of the graphic design studio capa. In 2007, Keller and Fesel founded the photo agency bobsairport. They now represent more than 80 photographers, most of whom are based in Berlin."

    Serie: Interior architecture series
Inhalt: "According to urban academic myth the first restaurants emerged in the wake of the French Revolution. From the very beginning in the elegant salons of the latter days of the Ancien Régime, the design of restaurants has been closely related to ideas of how food should be presented and how it may be consumed in public. The appearance and atmosphere created by restaurant owners reflects culturally embedded ideals of comfort, sociability and the good life. As a product of the modern metropolis, the restaurant encapsulates and illustrates the profound change in how its patrons viewed themselves as individuals, how they used their cities and how they met friends or business partners over a meal. The architectural design of environments for the consumption of food necessarily involves an exploration and a manipulation of the human experience of space. It reflects ideas about public and private behaviour for which the restaurant offers a stage. Famous architects were commissioned to provide designs for restaurants, in order to lure in an ever more demanding urban clientele. The interior designs of restaurants were often employed to present this particular aspect in consciously evoking an imagery of sophisticated modernity. This book presents the restaurant, its cultural and typological history as it evolved over time. In this unique combination it provides valuable knowledge for designers and students of design, and for everyone interested in the cultural history of the modern metropolis."

Inhalt: "At the close of the 20th century, this series of 10 volumes recording the century's most significant architectural achievements and covering all parts of the world will be published. Altogether 1000 buildings and urban complexes have been selected by noted architectural writers and critics. Within each volume, one hundred significant examples represent the political, economical, cultural and demographic evolution of the particular region over the century. The evident complexity of the enterprise cannot entirely exclude a few arbitrary choices. Not only does the selection procedure reflect individual choices, but also the division of the globe into transnational regions of vastly differing size and character evokes a specific appearance of World Architecture. Thus this architectural collection is to be understood as a critical mosaic representing as a whole the entire evolution of World Architecture from 1900 to 2000. -- Wilfried Wang."

Grouped into ten geographical regions and representing five twenty-year-periods, the buildings have been selected by over 75 internationally acknowledged architectural critics. Each volume features 100 buildings, each object accompanied by an analytical text as well as by drawings and photographs. Introductionary essays by the editors complete the survey. Inhalt: "The office is dead. Long live the office. Despite decades of predictions that the office is on the verge of extinction, it is surviving and thriving. Of course, things are changing. And changing fast. Digital technologies are transforming not only the work we do, but also the ways our workplaces are designed, built and operated. Automation and AI mean that some jobs will no longer exist whilst others will be created. But the very essence of the workplace -- human interaction and collaboration -- remains as necessary as ever. In fact, it is the human focus that is driving this new age, with four generations now in the workplace together for the first time. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, this book discusses the impacts of these changes on the future of work and workplace. The latest technologies are also explored from voice and digital twins, to new materials such as graphene and battery-powered buildings."

Inhalt: "The suburban, detached single-family home is a major legacy of the Fordist decades of the twentieth century. In 2011, two-thirds of German households occupied such single-family houses. These buildings have embodied the political support for a way of life and type of living arrangement since the 1950s, and continue to symbolize dreams of home, prosperity, and social status. West German suburbs today consist mainly of single-family homes built between the 1950s and 1980s. However, municipal administrations and politics at the local level are now faced with the emptying of single-family housing areas at the edges of villages and small towns. At the same time, young families in particular are calling for building plots in the countryside. Whilst remaining aware of critiques of the single-family home in urban planning and architecture, this interdisciplinary volume offers fresh insights into this type of dwellings-from its place in everyday life and popular culture, to changing welfare regimes and demographic change, and to the implementation of ecological frameworks in the construction industry."

Inhalt: "During the Covid-19 pandemic we have been forced to retreat into private shelters and to question the limits of residential typologies. The villa is an obvious example of such a shelter. It has re-emerged as an object of desire, because of the urge to escape the boundaries of our own four walls. Throughout history this typology has been rethought and reinvented by architectural greats who sought to break radically with the tradition of their times. But what does it mean to us to design a villa during a period of isolation and lockdown? The answer is not clear. The villa has always been both a dream home for clients and a means of expression for architects. It combines architecture's most primitive function -- to create a liveable shelter -- with an architect's endeavour to manifest their ideology in a single building. During an online design studio held at the Dessau School of Architecture, students from ten countries discussed the identities of the villa and their cultural context. The design of private shelters helped to overcome the paralysis of public life. This publication showcases some of the next generation's most promising ideas. Moreover, it aims to explore new methods for online teaching, which could serve as a reference for institutions in a post-COVID world."
