"Prägen Menschen Institutionen oder Institutionen den Menschen? Diese Frage hat eine starke politische Dimension, wie wir derzeit in den USA erleben. Doch nicht nur in der großen Politik, sondern auch im Kleinen kommt es auf die Haltung der Personen an, die einer Einrichtung ihre politische Ausrichtung verleihen. Zwei Personen, die zwei wichtige Institutionen und damit den Architekturdiskurs der letzten Jahrzehnte jede auf ihre Weise geprägt haben, bilden den inhaltlichen Hintergrund dieser Ausgabe: Dietmar Steiner, der von 1993 bis 2016 das Architekturzentrum Wien leitete, und Nikolaus Kuhnert, der seit 45 Jahren die ARCH+ als Redakteur und Mitherausgeber geprägt hat. Beide haben Architekturpolitik betrieben, aus der tiefen Überzeugung heraus, dass Architektur ein politisches Medium ist. Über diese Haltung haben wir, statt eines Editorials, ein Gespräch mit Nikolaus Kuhnert geführt. Dieses Heft erscheint in Kooperation mit dem Az W aus Anlass der Pensionierung von Dietmar Steiner sowie des 50-jährigen Jubiläums der ARCH+, die 1967 gegründet wurde. Es reflektiert anhand der von Karoline Mayer, Sonja Pisarik und Katharina Ritter kuratierten Ausstellung Am Ende: Architektur und des 20. Wiener Architektur Kongresses nicht nur die Diskurse der letzten 50 Jahre aus heutiger Sicht, sondern zeigt auch am Beispiel aktueller Praktiken auf, welche Perspektiven die Architektur als gesellschaftliche Praxis haben kann." -- "Do people shape institutions or institutions? This question has a strong political dimension, as we are currently seeing in the United States. Not only in big politics, but also on a small scale, it depends on the attitude of the people who give an institution its political orientation. Two people who have shaped two important institutions and thus the architectural discourse of the last few decades each in their own way form the background of this issue: Dietmar Steiner, who headed the Architekturzentrum Wien from 1993 to 2016, and Nikolaus Kuhnert, who has been the ARCH + as editor and co-editor. Both pursued architectural politics out of the deep conviction that architecture is a political medium. Instead of an editorial, we talked to Nikolaus Kuhnert about this attitude. This issue is published in cooperation with the Az W on the occasion of Dietmar Steiner's retirement and the 50th anniversary of ARCH +, which was founded in 1967.
