    ISBN: 978-3-318-01403-7
Series Statement: Advances in biological psychiatry Vol. 23
Content: Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) was introduced in the mid 1980s in clinical neurophysiology to study the central motor pathways. Research has been exponentially increased since, and many different methods for brain stimulation have been considered during the last decade. This publication focuses on transcranially applied, non- or low-invasive interventions not requiring an implantable device, i.e. electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), repetitive TMS (rTMS) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). It provides an excellent overview on this spectrum of fascinating techniques. Many leading experts in this field have contributed to this book. A single chapter summarizes the state of the art in ECT. A series of chapters provides an overview on preclinical research in animals and neuroimaging findings with rTMS and reviews the evidence of efficacy and safety in various psychiatric disorders (affective disorders, schizophrenia and anxiety disorders) also including an article on the application of rTMS in nonpsychiatric diseases, i.e. Parkinson’s disease, stroke, pain and tinnitus. Finally, separate reviews discuss very recent innovative approaches in the field of rTMS, i.e. magnetic seizure therapy, theta burst stimulation and deep rTMS. This publication will doubtlessly prove to be essential reading not only to researchers in this field, but also to psychiatrists, neurologists and other clinicians who consider applying these new methods in clinical settings
Note: explores the use of an innovative technology

    ISBN: 978-3-318-01084-8
Series Statement: Advances in psychosomatic medicine Vol. 26
Content: Somatically ill patients often also suffer from psychological symptoms. The diagnosis and treatment of these symptoms and their underlying psychiatric disorders are the task of consultation-liaison psychiatry. In this publication the latest developments, such as psychiatric comorbidity in general hospital inpatients as well as mental disorders in the outpatient setting, and special disorders like depression, alcohol abuse, and delirium, are discussed. One chapter on suicide attempts delineates the results and experiences from the 'German Competency Network on Depression'. The important topic of somatoform disorders in outpatient and inpatient settings is also reviewed. Non-German readers are usually are not aware that, in Germany, there are two distinct board-certified physician specialties dealing with patients with psychiatric illnesses, usually referred to as 'psychiatrists' and 'psychosomaticists'. In the 'Debate Section' succinct viewpoints are presented to enable the reader to decide whether this dichotomy is helpful or not in the clinical care of patients with psychiatric and somatic comorbidity. This publication is essential reading for psychiatrists, psychosomaticists, psychotherapists, geriatricians, psychologists, internists and health care planners. Also medical students and non-psychiatrists who want to broaden their view on how modern psychiatry can assist in the care of their patients will find it of special interest
Note: new insights in the care of medically and psychiatrically comorbid patients

Content: Stigma is a dehumanizing process, a method of shaming and blaming that is embedded in our beliefs about who does and does not have value within society. In Lazy, Crazy, and Disgusting, medical anthropologists Alexandra Brewis and Amber Wutich explore another side of the issue: the startling fact that well-intentioned public health campaigns can create new and sometimes damaging stigma, even when they are successful. Brewis and Wutich present a novel, synthetic argument about how stigmas act as a massive driver of global disease and suffering, killing or sickening billions every year. They focus on three of the most complex, difficult-to-fix global health efforts: bringing sanitation to all, treating mental illness, and preventing obesity. They explain how and why humans so readily stigmatize, how this derails ongoing public health efforts, and why this process invariably hurts people who are already at risk. They also explore how new stigmas enter global health so easily and consider why destigmatization is so very difficult. Finally, the book offers potential solutions that may be able to prevent, challenge, and fix stigma. Stigma elimination, Brewis and Wutich conclude, must be recognized as a necessary and core component of all global health efforts. Drawing on the authors' keen observations and decades of fieldwork, Lazy, Crazy, and Disgusting combines a wide array of ethnographic evidence from around the globe to demonstrate conclusively how stigma undermines global health's basic goals to create both health and justice. -- ǂc book jacket
