Inhalt: Andrzej Titkow drehte 1984 den Dokumentarfilm "Der Fußgänger / Przechodzien'" über Konwicki.
Inhalt: Andrzej Titkow is a poet, director, author of screenplays and theatre plays. His work includes not only documentaries but also features made for television and cinema. Literature and cinema, poetry and film intertwine in his work in various ways. The most obvious one concerns the themes of his films, among which portraits, essays and studies of people of letters are in a majority. Therefore no review of Titkow's work aspiring to be representative could dispense with such titles as "Przechodzien'" (1984, about Tadeusz Konwicki)... The behind-the-scenes of Tadeusz Konwicki's film portrait of could in itself provide material for another film story. After all, that was the decade of the martial law, the Orwellian 1984, while Titkow makes - in broad daylight and legally - a film about an author whose novels are published in the underground or appear in emigration publications; the author himself is probably the last man of letters the then authority would have liked to see on cinema screens. The movie begins with Oriana Fallaci appearing at the Wałęsas' flat in an apartment block to interview the future Nobel Prize winner... By doing so, she unveils the truth of a man gifted with charisma and amazing political intuition. The actual biographical story begins in 1970. The following scenes showing his path to political maturity are interwoven with the Wałęsas' family life. ... The film, just as Lech Wałęsa's life, is full of contrasts... Inhalt: Made in 1983, shelved for four years. A chilling tale about kids playing in a bombed-out Warsaw courtyard on the day of Stalin's death, while their parents are away at the church or a memorial procession. A pudgy boy, disliked as a snob and a bully, appears decked out in a black suit covered by his father's medals. He is about to go to the trains station, but first he steals some of the pre-war medals from the porter's ragged son. This second group of decorations outrages the party members who come to pick him up, and leads to arrest of his parents. The terrible ironies and senselessness of the adult world pass over the heads of the kids, who go on playing games like "Uprising" and "Shoot the Jews". In another play kids torment a half-wit woman, then try to make the porter's son strangle the courtyard kitten. Maryska, a girl who always sticks to herselef is chased up and down the precarious scaffolding and finally buried in the sand box along with the dead kitten. The games go on... Inhalt: The process of creating Polish hip-hop group Paktofonika, its highs and lows and very last days of life of its frontman and co-founder Piotr (Magik) Luszcz. "To be a young rapper means being an artist. And when an artist thinks he is god, the world is not enough. When Magik (Marcin Kowalczyk), Fokus (Tomasz Schuchardt) and Rahim (Dawid Ogrodnik) speak, they make mistakes, confuse words, mispronounce. But when they start to rap, it becomes the most natural thing in the world. Making music, going with the flow with words and rhymes is the essence of their lives. They turn their personal issues and experiences into lyrics. As long as they can express themselves through music, everything else falls into place. Through their music they give vent to anger, disappointment and fear. The reality seems at times cruel for the members of legendary band Paktofonika. Fokus is struggling with finishing high school, or rather not being kicked out of one. Rahim has to deal with a tough physical job. Magik faces responsibilities of unexpectedly becoming a husband and a father. For young guys as they are it all may overwhelm. Yet, the truth is their hardships aren't convincing. After all, they come from normal families. Like in all normal families, they have financial problems, but apart from that, the movie presents them as quite regular. For this reason, it's hard to understand what the conflict is here. Is it only the artistic pain, perhaps?" (V for...)

Inhalt: One should look for the sources of the legend that surrounds the person and work of Andrzej Munk (1921-1961) in his untimely and tragic death and, above all, in the belief that what he did create as filmmaker and what he had no time to create contains a mystery. This belief stems from the experience of his films and the feeling that his sudden death put an end to an important current in the history of Polish cinema; a separate phenomenon deprived of spiritual partners and followers. (...) He was fascinated with experiment in art. This is, after all, how his early documentaries have to be seen. In the 1950s, fictionalizing the documentary form - or to put things in the opposite way - employment of the documentary film poetics to depict fictional events, was the mark of his experimental approach, his search for new forms of expression. However, Munk treated formal experiments in a special way. One can safely assume that in most cases - which is particularly evident in the first, documentary period of his work - these formal experiments opposed, in moral terms, the imposed propaganda goals, standardized ideology and aesthetic norms. These became de-mythologized through revealing the presence of real people in the ideologically-programmed un-reality, as well as through his search for forms of cinematic imaging able to destroy certain binding conventions. Andrzej Munk, the rebellious documentary filmmaker, remained one even when he had moved away from the documentary towards feature films. Ewelina Nurczynska-Fidelska (PWA)

Inhalt: Seven friends, officers of the Traffic Police Department in Warsaw lead seemingly fulfilled lives. They work together, party together, together they play jokes, cut small deals and sport fast cars. Their small world gets rocked when one of them is found murdered. Seargent Król becomes a chief suspect in the case. He manages to escape arrest and as a fugitive tries to prove his innocence. Slowly he begins to uncover a corruption scheme which points towards high circles of authority in police and politics. (IMDb)
Inhalt: The Traffic Department is a truly unique and raw piece of cinema. Smarzowski subversively plays with genre conventions of cop drama while he constantly bludgeons sore spots of Polish society. The story composition and the rapid and rough editing and cinematography raise the film far above the average police and political thriller. The overall style leans towards a more naturalistic and explicit approach especially driven by a shaky and frenzied camera. Smarzowski employs a lot of "authentic" shots taken mostly from mobile phones or CCTV to reinforce the naturalism. They can also easily be considered a leitmotif of the film, to render the idea of a tech-obsessive society as a narcissistic one, and depict another reality, similar to that of "big brother." An impressive way to present double-layers of the world, the one subjectively perceived and another one, behind the curtains where all the strings are being pulled. The director drags viewers into the ruthless and outright rotten cesspool of corruption crawling into the higher political ranks... (Martin Kudlác, Cineuropa)

Inhalt: "Gryczelowska, Kamien'ska and Halladin are three great individualities of the Polish Documentary School. Each of them, disparately, paints a vision of Poland in the 60s, 70s and 80s. It is difficult to imagine Polish documentary cinema without their films (...) they never created films together, neither were their achievements linked through a common denominator, nor were they brought together, like they have in this compilation. Nevertheless, the output of these three documentary filmmakers does have plenty in common. Against the background of other films, these stand out thanks to their very specific vantage points. The authors adopt the attitude of a "delicate observer", who looks at the world penetratingly and warmly". Mikolaj Jazdon Krystyna Gryczelowska: "I believe that, from time to time, we all need a moment to contemplate, reflect upon the world, and the reality surrounding us. A good, profound documentary allows us to experience such great instants, in which we notice something new in life, or in the world, something we had been blind to until someone pointed it out to us". From 'Observation and Synthesis' survey, "Cinema" 1978 nr. 22 Danuta Halladin: "I, personally, am most interested in matters private, with insignificant, underdeveloped action. And a child's world is so attractive, that neither limited action, interior arrangements nor decoration is a meaningful impediment for the director". ĺDanuta Halladin on two worlds of a child', "Kamera" 1961 nr. 8 Irena Kamienska: "Making documentaries I enrich my own life with the lives of others, with those of my protagonists, with problems, issues, which I would have never encountered had it not been for the film. I have always been interested in the person, the carrier of his/her own fate, a truth, which no one besides them know".
