(Verlagstext)

Content: "Reverberations of Nazi Violence in Germany and Beyond explores the complex and diverse reverberations of the Second World War after 1945. It focuses on the legacies that National Socialist violence and genocide perpetrated in Europe continue to have in German-speaking countries and communities, as well as among those directly affected by occupation, terror and mass murder. Furthermore it explores how those legacies are in turn shaped by the present. The v. also considers conflicting, unexpected and often dissonant interpretations and representations of these events, made by those who were the witnesses, victims and perpetrators at the time and also by different communities in the generations that followed. The contributions, from a range of disciplinary perspectives, enrich our understanding of the complexity of the ways in which a disturbing past continues to disrupt the present and how the past is in turn disturbed and instrumentalized by a later present."--

Series Statement: Studies in political radicalization: historical and comparative perspectives [1]
Content: The increasing radicalization of political life in most countries in Europe lends special relevance to studies of the antifascist legacies on the continent. This insightful collection of essays is an in-depth review of antifascism in Slovenia, setting it in the context of related movements elsewhere in Europe. The period treated by the 19 essays comprises the interwar period, World War Two, and the post-war decades. The comparative and transnational perspectives advanced by the volume change our understanding of antifascism. The essays deal with the right-wing but also left-wing instrumentalization of antifascism, with a particular focus on the communist and post-communist periods. The authors point out that antifascism comes in various strains, whether inspired by liberalism, social democracy, communism, monarchism, anarchism, or even Christian conservatism. The contributors bring to light several overlooked antifascist actors, campaigns, and organisations, mostly in Slovenia and the Adriatic area.

Content: "This book is a vital exploration of the harrowing stories of mass displacement that took place in the first half of the 20th century from the perspective of forced migrants themselves. The volume brings together 15 interrelated case studies which show how the deportation, evacuation and flight of millions of people as a result of the First World War intensified rather than alleviated ethnic conflicts which culminated in population transfers on an even larger scale during and immediately after the Second World War. While each chapter focuses on a different group of refugees and displaced persons, the text as a whole looks at the experience of forced migration as a complex set of evolving relationships with the receiving society, the homeland, the broader diaspora and other migrant communities living within the same host country. This innovative, four-dimensional model provides an overarching conceptual framework that binds the chapters together within the longer arc of European history. By going beyond the conventional narratives of national victimhood and (un)successful assimilation of refugees, A Transnational History of Forced Migrants in Europe reveals that identities of forced migrants in the first half of the 20th century were individualised, hybrid and constantly reconstructed in response to socioeconomic forces and political pressures. The case studies collected in this volume further suggest that age, gender, social class, educational level and the personal experiences of 'unwilling nomads' are more important to the understanding of forced migration history than ethnoreligious identities of victims and perpetrators."--

Content: This book, inspired by the sociologist Günter Dux, co-edited by the historian Hans Ulrich Vogel, and introduced by Mark Elvin, is a collective intellectual masterpiece written by some of the world’s leading scholars. Its purpose is to illuminate premodern Chinese ways of thinking about Nature by comparing them with their counterpart traditions in Europe. In so doing it also subtly reshapes our understanding of premodern European concepts of the natural world. The domains covered principally include philosophy, language, poetry, science, and mathematics, and their relations with society, technology, and politics. By analyzing the frequent partial similarities between these great two cultural areas in the context of their overall contrasts, it points the way for the first time to defining accurately the differences that have been critical for world history

Content: The keywords migration, elite, and confession that form the leitmotiv of this book allow a focus on major subjects of research in early modern history. Concentrating on subjects relevant to the history of education, the essays collected here offer manifold insights into new source material and the evaluation of methods. The fifteen papers cover a wide range of topics related to the education of academic theologians and clergy in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. As training programmes differed from university to university, this gave rise to migration and an extensive communicative network. Although a final conclusion of methodological questions requires more research, the volume provides an important contribution to the interdisciplinary discussion between representatives of the many historical disciplines. The fifteen contributors: Luca Baschera, Amy Nelson Burnett, Otfried Czaika, Simone Giese, Anja-Silvia Göing, Leonhard Hell, Wim Janse, Julian Kümmerle, Andreas Mühling, Hans Peterse, Frank van der Pol, Sünje Prühlen, Alexander Schunka, Sven Tode, and Jason Zuidema

Series Statement: Greifswalder Theologische Forschungen Band 31
Mit Beiträgen von William Adler, Christfried Böttrich, Jan Dochhorn, Igor Dorfmann-Lazarev, Dieter Fahl, Sabine Fahl, Emmanouela Grypeou, Caroline Macé, Martin Meiser, Johannes Niehoff-Panagiotidis, Alen Novalija, Paolo Odorico, Julian Petkov, Martin Rösel, Tat'jana Rudi, Tetjana Vilkul, Tat’jana Vladimirovna Anisimova, Evgenij E. Vodolazki. [From History Bible to World Chronicle. Studies in the Paleya Literature] Medieval times were a golden age for biblical fiction in Europe. In the East, it took the form of the so-called »Paleya«, an anthology of biblical narrations from creation up to King Solomon. This collection, which exists in different forms and redactions, was later expanded and shifted into the chronographic genre. The development in the West was very similar, producing »Peoples’ Bibles« or »History Bibles« which, for their part, evidenced a great affinity to illustrated or rhyming chronicles. The present volume ist devoted to this phenomen of »History Bibles«, referring back to an international symposium in Greifswald in September 2017. Its 17 contributions examine different aspects of the Paleya literature in order to situate them in the wider context of European »History Bibles«.

Content: The question of how research on structures and outcomes in Religious Education can be carried out successfully is of current interest in many countries. Next to the more traditional historical, analytical and, more recently, international comparative approaches, empirical research in religious education has been able to establish itself as a major approach to this field. Moreover, the contemporary discussion about comparative evaluation in schools has raised a number of questions which also refer to Religious Education. What competences can pupils acquire in this subject? Does Religious Education really support the acquisition and development of the competences aspired? Are there differences in this respect between different forms of Religious Education or between different approaches to teaching? With contributions from eight European countries, the volume brings together approaches and research experiences that try to follow this lead by offering new and empirically based perspectives for the future improvement of teaching and learning in this school subject. Whoever is interested in improving the practice of Religious Education then, will not be able to bypass the question of researching processes and outcomes – an insight which also refers to a small but growing number of studies in this field which can be identified in several countries.
Content: It is rare, in my experience, to find a book that is so informative and so well framed by the editors, to leave the reader both informed and wanting to know more, both knowledgeable and thoughtful, both full of research and wanting to participate in more research. I welcome this volume, and applaud its breadth and depth. – Julian Stern, in: British Journal of Religious Education 2/2019, p. 236.
