Wie in seinen zuvor erschienenen Werken (hier zuletzt "Geschichten aus dem Bett", BA 2/01) verarbeitet Herzberg in "Alle Nähe fern" die eigene Familiengeschichte. Seit der Emigration aus Deutschland während des 3. Reichs lebt die Familie des Lederfabrikanten Zimmermann über den Globus verteilt und erlebt aus verschiedenen Blickwinkeln Verfolgung, Nazi- und DDR-Diktatur und Rückkehr. Herzbergs Können blitzt v.a. in der Schilderung entscheidender Momente auf, die das Leben der Angehörigen für immer verändern, etwa der Befehl von Pauls Vater, man solle mit ihm während der NVA-Ausbildung "hart verfahren". So ist es der stark autobiografische Bezug, der berührt und darüber hinweg tröstet, dass der literarische Gewaltmarsch durch das 20. Jahrhundert kaum Neues über die Schrecken der 2 deutschen Diktaturen zu berichten weiss. Das ereignisreiche Leben der Familie sprengt nahezu das enge Korsett des 270-Seiten starken Romans, sodass ihr Schicksal deutsch-jüdische Geschichte der letzten 100 Jahre zwar exemplarisch, ansonsten jedoch nur schlaglichtartig beleuchtet.
