But in cinema the WWII changed all that for a time. Although the two countries' wartime fortunes differed, post-war both were busy reintegrating returning servicemen and prisoners of war, and accomodating the changed aspirations of women. Margaret Butler examines these subjects and more in her comparative study of the cinemas of Britain and France during and after the war. Using the concept of continuity, she shows how cinema dealt directly with ideas of belonging and alienation, inclusion and exclusion, unity and div

Content: 'At the Edges of Sleep' considers sleep in film and moving image art as both a subject matter to explore onscreen and a state to induce in the audience. Far from negating action or meaning, sleep extends into new territories as it designates ways of existing in the world, in relation to people, places, and the past. Defined positively, sleep also expands our understanding of reception beyond the binary of concentration and distraction. These possibilities converge in the work of Thai filmmaker and artist Apichatpong Weerasethakul, who has explored the subject of sleep systematically throughout his career. In examining Apichatpong’s work, Jean Ma brings together an array of interlocutors - from Freud to Proust, George Méliès to Tsai Ming-liang, Weegee to Warhol - to rethink moving images through the lens of sleep. Ma exposes an affinity between cinema, spectatorship, and sleep that dates to the earliest years of filmmaking, and sheds light upon the shifting cultural valences of sleep in the present moment [...].

Content: Stories are central drivers of media today - not only do they propel plot-driven entertainment media, such as television, cinema, theatre, but also social media. Telling and having a story is widely deemed essential, both in the large and widely visible world of commerce and in the everyday social lives of individuals. Does this dynamic represent an intensification of what has always been part of culture and civilization, or has it reached a new universality?

Content: When the Lumière brothers introduced the motion picture in 1895, Poland was a divided and suffering nation--yet Polish artists found their way into the new world of cinema. Polish pioneer Boleslaw Matuszewski created his first documentary films in 1896, and Poland's first movie house was established in 1908. Despite war and repression, Polish cinema continued to grow and to reach for artistic heights. The twentieth century closed with new challenges, but a new generation of Polish filmmakers stands ready to meet them. Here is a complete history of the Polish cinema through the end of the twentieth century, with special attention to political and economic contexts. Each chapter includes discussions of important directors and films in a given period. (Yiddish-language films, which were made primarily in Poland, are included.) Unique reference material includes a filmography providing cast and crew information for more than 500 Polish films; information about the translation of titles; and a list of all Polish films approved, rejected, or conditionally approved by the New York State Department of Education from 1922 through 1965, during which time the Department exercised virtual censorship for the whole country. Photographs offer a look at hard-to-find Polish films, and an index provides quick access to names and titles.

Series Statement: Film Theory in Media History
Content: One of the iconic figures of the twentieth-century cinema, Sergei Eisenstein is best known as the director of The Battleship Potemkin, Alexander Nevskii and Ivan the Terrible. His craft as director and film editor left a distinct mark on such key figures of the Western cinema as Nicolas Roeg, Francis Ford Coppola, Sam Peckinpah and Akiro Kurosawa. This comprehensive volume of Eisenstein’s writings is the first-ever English-language edition of his newly discovered notes for a general history of the cinema, a project he undertook in 1946-47 before his death in 1948. In his writings, Eisenstein presents the main coordinates of a history of the cinema without mentioning specific directors or films: what we find instead is a vast genealogy of all the media and of all the art forms that have preceded cinema’s birth and accompanied the first decades of its history, exploring the same expressive possibilities that cinema has explored and responding to the same, deeply rooted, —urges˜ cinema has responded to. Cinema appears here as the heir of a very long tradition that includes death masks, ritual processions, wax museums, diorama and panorama, and as a medium in constant transformation, that far from being locked in a stable form continues to redefine itself. The texts by Eisenstein are accompanied by a series of critical essays written by some of the world’s most qualified Eisenstein scholars...
