Content: Confrontations between the powerless and the powerful are laden with deception - the powerless feign deference and the powerful subtly assert their mastery. Peasants, serfs, untouchables, slaves, labourers, and prisoners are not free to speak their minds in the presence of power. These subordinate groups instead create a secret discourse that represents a critique of power spoken behind the backs of the dominant. At the same time, the powerful also develop a private dialogue about practices and goals of their rule that cannot be openly avowed. In this book, the author, a social scientist, offers a discussion both of the public roles played by the powerful and powerless and the mocking, vengeful tone they display off stage - what he terms their public and hidden transcripts. Using examples from the literature, history, and politics of cultures around the world, the author examines the many guises this interaction has taken throughout history and the tensions and contradictions it reflects. The author describes the ideological resistance of subordinate groups - their gossip, folktales, songs, jokes, and theater - their use of anonymity and ambiguity. He also analyzes how ruling elites attempt to convey an impression of hegemony through such devices as parades, state ceremony, and rituals of subordination and apology. Finally he identifies - with quotations that range from the recollections of American slaves to those of Russian citizens during the beginnings of Gorbachev's glasnost campaign - the political electricity generated among oppressed groups when, for the first time, the hidden transcript is spoken directly and publicly in the face of power.

Content: This book reflects the recent developments while providing a comprehensive introduction to the Internet of things (IoT) and cloud technologies in transforming aging. IoT has its origins in device connectivity, whereas the cloud grew out of computer science. They can be viewed as two facets of the same field, and together they have undergone substantial development over the past ten years. This book is aimed at advanced undergraduates or first-year research students, as well as researchers and practitioners, and assumes no previous knowledge of IoT and cloud concepts. Basics of computer applications and concepts are required. Some familiarity with gerontechnology would be helpful, though not essential, as this book includes a self-contained introduction to how technology is transforming elderly care and eHealth management. This book aims to give references that offer more detail than is possible here and hopefully provide an entry point into a series of technologies that can improve the quality of life for the elderly. The book includes several case studies explaining how each piece of technology works and its benefits to the elderly. This book is also considered as a simple guide to the technologies for the elderly to use in the community.
Note: Introduction -- The Vision of the Healthcare Industry for Supporting the Aging Population -- Building Long-Term Care Services Around the World -- Iot and Cloud Computing for Development of Systems for Elderly and E-Health -- New Generation of Healthcare Services Based on Internet of Medical Things, Edge and Cloud Computing Infrastructures -- Artificial Intelligence and Data Mining Techniques for the Wellbeing of Elderly -- Domesticating Homecare Services -- Case Study in Fall Prevention in Indoor Environments -- Case Study in Elderly Consultancy Services -- Case Study in Remote Diagnosis.

Content: Alzheimer's disease is a degenerative brain disease which has major social consequences for the individuals affected and for those who are emotionally and/or physically close to them. The role which language plays in such relationships stands at the center of this book
Content: In contrast to traditional analyses carried out by psycholinguists, neurolinguists and speech pathologists, with speech samples elicited in clinical settings, Heidi Ehernberger Hamilton examines language in the life of one elderly female Alzheimer's patient from an interactional sociolinguistic perspective. The language of open-ended, naturally occurring conversations between the patient and the author, over four-and-one-half years, is investigated not only in an attempt to understand how the patient's communicative abilities and disabilities are related to each other and how they change over time, but, importantly, how they are influenced by both preemptive and reactive communicative behaviors on the part of the patient's healthy interlocutor
Content: This "personal and particular" study of conversations with one Alzheimer's patient is offered as a humanistic approach to language loss. It is one in which communicative breakdowns are analyzed, not separately from details about the patient, her conversational partners, and the setting, nor from relevant social facts which may influence interactions; that is, one in which language disability is seen as a human problem within multiple linguistic and social contexts

Content: Do memory abilities decline with aging? Are changes in memory universal or differential? Do they occur similarly or differentially for all types of memory and to all aging persons? These are some of the principal questions explored in the Victoria Longitudinal Study. This monograph reports recent longitudinal data following the same individuals over a six-year period. The authors consider a variety of theoretical and methodological issues related to memory and aging. In addition, they report analyses of data to examine questions such as, Are average changes in performance associated with age, cohort, or both? Are there substantial individual differences in memory change in later life or are people changing in similar fashion? What component processes predict changes in complex memory performance in adulthood?

Series Statement: Studies in social inequality
Content: The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 was the beginning of one of the most interesting natural experiments in recent history. The East German transition from a Communist state to part of the Federal Republic of Germany abruptly created a new social order as old institutions were abolished and new counterparts imported. This unique situation provides an exceptional opportunity to examine the central tenets of life course sociology. The empirical chapters of this book draw a comprehensive picture of life course transformation, demonstrating how the combination of life course dynamics coupled with an extraordinary pace of system change affect individual lives. How much turbulence was created by the transition and how much stability was preserved? How did the qualifications and resources acquired before 1989 influence the fortunes in the restructured economy? How did the privatization and reorganization of firms impact individuals? Did the transformation experiences differ by age/cohort and gender? How stable were social networks at work and in the family? Were personality characteristics important mediators of post-1989 success or failure or were they rather changed by them? How specific were the East German life trajectories in comparison with Poland and West-Germany?
