Content: In Algorithms of Oppression, Safiya Umoja Noble challenges the idea that search engines like Google offer an equal playing field for all forms of ideas, identities, and activities. Data discrimination is a real social problem; Noble argues that the combination of private interests in promoting certain sites, along with the monopoly status of a relatively small number of Internet search engines, leads to a biased set of search algorithms that privilege whiteness and discriminate against people of color, specifically women of color. Through an analysis of textual and media searches as well as extensive research on paid online advertising, Noble exposes a culture of racism and sexism in the way discoverability is created online. As search engines and their related companies grow in importance—operating as a source for email, a major vehicle for primary and secondary school learning, and beyond—understanding and reversing these disquieting trends and discriminatory practices is of utmost importance. An original, surprising and, at times, disturbing account of bias on the internet, Algorithms of Oppression contributes to our understanding of how racism is created, maintained, and disseminated in the 21st century. Content: Psy-sciences (psychology, psychiatry, psychoanalysis, pedagogy, criminology, special education, etc.) have been connected to politics in diverse ways during the 20th and 21st centuries. Besides episodes in the history of psychoanalysis in politically troubled times, the chapters in the book explore the full variety of "psy" disciplines in dictatorships and authoritarian regimes such as Nazi Germany, East European communist regimes, a Latin-American military dictatorship, and the South African apartheid regime, discussing psychology's role in legitimating and "normalizing" dictatorships. The essays' authors also explain the ideological and political foundations of ideas concerning mental health and illness in Russia, Hungary, post-war Transylvania, and Germany. Currents of critical psychology are also discussed, which try to understand how academic, therapeutic, and everyday psychological knowledge is produced within the power relations of modern-market or state-capitalist societies

Content: "Pogroms and blood libels constitute the two classical and most extreme manifestations of tsarist antisemitism. They were often closely intertwined in history and memory, not least because the accusation of blood libel, the allegation that Jews murder Christian children to use their blood for ritual purposes, frequently triggered anti-Jewish violence. Such events were and are considered central to the Jewish experience in late tsarist Russia, the only country on earth with large scale anti-Jewish violence in the early twentieth century. Boasting its break from the tsarist period, the Soviet regime proudly claimed to have eradicated these forms of antisemitism. But, alas, life was much more complicated. The phenomenon and the memory of pogroms and blood libels in different areas of interwar Soviet Union-including Ukraine, Belorussia, Russia and Central Asia-as well as, after World War II, in the newly annexed territories of Lithuania, Western Ukraine and Western Belorussia are a reminder of continuities in the midst of revolutionary ruptures. The persistence, the permutation, and the responses to anti-Jewish violence and memories of violence suggest that Soviet Jews (and non-Jews alike) cohabited with a legacy of blood that did not vanish. This book traces the "afterlife" of these extreme manifestations of antisemitism in the USSR, and in doing so sheds light on the broader question of the changing position of Jews in Soviet society. One notable rupture in manifestations of antisemitism from tsarist to Soviet times included the virtual disappearance-at least during the interwar period-of the tight link between pogroms and blood allegations, indeed a common feature in the waves of anti-Jewish violence that erupted during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries." --

It traces the evolution of regulatory institutions, highlighting the most recent era of globalization, deregulation, privatization and regulatory innovation before examining influential frameworks for understanding regulatory culture in action, assessing the impacts of regulatory policies, and explaining regulatory change. Content: "Language and Society introduces a broad and exciting array of topics relating to the interaction of language and society in a clear, non-specialist way. The book discusses the socio-political roles played by dominant, large languages around the world, and how the growth of major national and official languages is threatening the existence of smaller, minority languages, leading to the widespread occurrence of language death in modern times. As individuals adopt new ways of speaking, many languages are disappearing, others are spoken in mixed-ways combining words from different languages, and even very 'stable' languages are coming to take on distinctive new shapes, as young speakers create novel expressions and make use of innovative pronunciations. Carefully explaining the many reasons for language variation and change which relate to the structure of society and the expression of group and personal identity, Language and Society presents a detailed but highly accessible examination of the social importance of language in our everyday lives, and how our knowledge of language can either act as a facilitating gateway or inhibit access to education, advances in employment and the development of social status. The volume also includes chapters focused specifically on the global growth of knowledge of English, multilingualism, differences in the way that gender and gendered practices interact with language, and the ways that language may potentially influence the ways speakers perceive the world." - Verlag

-Amanda Ripley, autora de The Smartest Kids in the World, éxito de ventas editado por el New York Times.
