Abstract: Eight-tree plots of from 5 to 7 different apple cultivars were replicated 3 times in a randomized complete block design. The trees were 15 years old on the EM2 rootstock and spaced 15 × 30 ft. Treatments were applied atpetal fall, May 15, and in 6 cover sprays, May 29, Jun 14, 28, Jul 12, 26, and Aug 13, except the UC 55248 treatment which was applied at tight cluster, Apr 23, and again on Jul 12. Treatments were applied dilute to run-off using a high pressure handgun sprayer at 400 psi delivering 4.2 gal spray/tree or 403 gal/acre. Additional sprays applied over the entire block included Difolatan 4F 5 gal/acre, April 19; Cyprex 65W 2lb/acre, Jun 1; and Plictran 50W 4 oz/100 with the Jul 12 treatments. Above normal temperatures and below normal rainfall occurred during the month of Jul, while more normal conditions prevailed during the rest of the season. Insect pressure was below normal for most species evaluated.

Abstract: Treatments were applied dilute to runoff using a handgun sprayer at 400 psi to 8 tree plots replicated 3 times in a randomized complete block design. Treatments were applied at pink, Apr 20, 22, petal fall, May 14, and in 7 cover sprays, May 28, Jun 12, Jun 24, Jul 8, Jul 23, Aug 7, and Aug 20, using 4.2 gal spray/tree (403 gal/acre). Trees were 17-yrs-old, ca 12 ft high, on EM2 rootstock, and spaced 15 x 30 ft. The fungicide Baycor 50W was applied over the entire block at the rate of 8 oz form/acre along with 2 qt of Agridex/acre on Apr 28, May 19, Jun 2, and without the Agridex on Jun 23. Thinning sprays utilizing from 5-15 ppm of Naphthaleneacetic acid (depending upon the cultivar) were applied May 20. Early spring frosts reduced the fruit crop throughout the area while a later summer drought further stressed the trees. Temperatures were above normal for most the season while rainfall was considerably below normal. Pest populations, especialy plum curculio, tarnished plant bug, and gypsy moth, were above normal levels. Evaluation of insect damage was assessed by examining 100 fruits/cultivar/plot from ,Mcintosh, Sep 1, ,Cortland, Sep 10, and ,Golden Delicious, Sep 23.

Abstract: Eleven treatments were applied to 8 tree plots replicated 3 times in a randomized block design to evaluate seasonal insect control. Treatments were applied by handgun sprayer at 400 psi, to run-off, using 4.2 gal spray/tree (403 gal/acre). Applications were made at pink, Apr 20, 22, petal fall, May 14, and in 7 cover sprays, May 28, Jun 12, Jun 24, Jul 8, Jul 23, Aug 7, and Aug 20. Trees were 17-yr-old, 12 ft high, and spaced 15 x 30 ft. The fungicide Baycor 50WP (8.0 oz form/acre) was applied with 2 qt of Agridex/acre on Apr 28, May 19, and Jun 2, and without Agridex on Jun 23. The fungicide was applied at 4X (100 gal/acre) concentration with an airblast sprayer. Thinning sprays of Naphthaleneacetic acid were applied by handgun on May 20. Plictran was included with several treatments for mite control on Jul 23. Above normal Spring temperatures hastened the onset of the season resulting in an early buildup of most mite populations. Mite populations were assessed by sampling and brushing with a mite brushing machine 25 ‘Red Delicious’ leaves/tree from 1 tree/repiicate.

Abstract: Several insecticides were evaluated for their miticidal properties in a seasonal control program conducted at the Hudson Valley Laboratory orchards. In addition an experimental mificide, UC 55248, was applied at tight cluster (Apr 23) and again on Jul 12 and evaluated along with other treatments. With the exception of UC 55248, all treatments were applied at petal fall (May 15) and in six cover sprays May 29, Jun 14, 28, Jul 12, 26, and Aug 13. Treatments were applied dilute to run-off using 4 . 2 gal spray/tree or 403 gal/acre. Each treatment was applied to eight-tree plots of 5 to 7 different apple cultivars on the EM2 rootstock replicated 3 times in a randomized complete block design. Trees were ca. 12 ft high and spaced 15 × 30 ft. Additional sprays applied for disease control over the entire block included: Difolatan 4F 5 gal/acre Apr 19 and Cyprex 65W 2lb/acre Jun 1 . Pest mite population pressure was very great with over 61 ERM and 300 ARM/leaf in the check by Jul 5 . Above normal temperatures and below normal rainfall during the month of Jul contributed to the high mite populations. Because of the high mite populations present, Plicfran 50W 4 oz formulation/100 gal was combined with the Ambush, Lorsban, Penncap, Guthion, Pirimor, Diazinon, and Pounce treatments and applied on the Jul 12 cover spray. Mites were evaluated Jun 8, Jul 5, 20, and Aug 20 by collecting 25 Red Delicious leaves/tree from each replicate. The leaves were brushed with a mite brushing machine and all mite stages counted under a binocular scope.
