Series Statement: Current problems in dermatology Vol. 29
Content: Are free radicals and reactive oxygen species relevant to dermatopathology? Do antioxidants protect against free-radical-mediated cutaneous diseases and aging? To these and further current questions in the rapidly progressing field of basic and applied skin research, this up-to-date volume provides a scientific basis. It presents state-of-the-art reviews on the progress in detection of free radicals and antioxidants and their responses to environmental oxidative stressors. Furthermore, several expert contributions focus on the exciting developments in oxidative DNA damage and UVB- and UVA-induced signal transduction in skin. Finally, information is given on new antioxidant protection strategies against skin carcinogenesis and skin aging which may be fundamental for the pharmaceutical or skin-care products of tomorrow. Due to its unique and up-to-date collection of state-of-the-art contributions by many of the world’s leading scientists in the field, this book will be essential reading for dermatologists, cosmetologists, pharmacologists and environmental toxicologists

Series Statement: Chemical immunology and allergy Vol. 82
Content: The incidence of allergies is increasing worldwide. Beside the well-established symptomatic treatments and subcutaneous immunotherapies, formerly known as de- or hyposensitization, a new form of treatment, local immunotherapy, has been developed in recent years. Local immunotherapy, though still controversially discussed, promises to be a curative, noninvasive, and easily applicable treatment for allergies. This volume summarizes the most current information on local immuntherapy compiled by internationally renowned specialists. In the methodology section, general aspects of local immunotherapy are presented including its history, allergen resorption and biodistribution, mechanisms of oral tolerance and practical experiences. The second section devoted to efficacy and safety presents findings from international placebo-controlled studies on nasal and sublingual immunotherapies with different allergens and for different allergic conditions including asthma and eczema. Possible side effects are also discussed. The concluding chapter critically evaluates the future prospects of this new method, pointing out still unresolved issues such as the exact immunological mechanisms, its long-term effects, or the standardization of dose and application intervals/duration.This state-of-the-art account will be of particular interest to scientists working in the field of allergy, clinical allergologists, pharmacists, and representatives from the pharmaceutical industry
Note: a promising new approach to curing allergies

Content: Non-invasive bioengineering techniques have become indispensable tools both in the development of drugs and cosmetics and in clinical dermatology. These techniques enable researchers to study the structure and function of human skin objectively and quantitatively. Recent technological developments have brought new techniques into the laboratory and the hospital, among them magnetic resonance imaging, optical coherence tomography and microdialysis. This book describes these state-of-the-art developments, details the application of skin bioengineering techniques for clinical purposes, shows their use in the testing of pharmaceutics and cosmetics and provides an overview of the design and legal aspects of skin bioengineering testing. It will be essential reading for dermatologists, cosmetologists, pharmacologists and toxicologists

Content: The differential application of skin protection in occupational settings becomes increasingly complex. Due to new scientific results and technological aspects as well as European and US regulations that have to be considered in the context of cosmetics and personal protective equipment, the practical application of skin protection requires constant reviewing and improvement. This publication provides a comprehensive update on specific cosmetic products from general principles of composition, protection from specific exposures, such as irritants, allergens and ultraviolet irradiation, to safety and efficacy testing both from the perspective of in vitro and in vivo testing. The second part focusses on special requirements and practical application in high-risk occupations and the respective skin protection programs, also including some critical remarks on the limitations of currently available skin protection measures. For specialists in the field of occupational dermatology such as dermatologists, allergists, occupational physicians, industrial hygienists, toxicologists, pharmacists and cosmetic scientists, this volume provides essential information on practical application, recommendation, testing or the making of personal skin protection products
Note: A comprehensive update on practical application, recommendation testing and products

Content: Mucosal membranes have unique anatomical and physiological properties -- differing from those of the keratinized epithelium -- which affect drug or chemical absorption. This makes the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the mucosa a challenge to dermatologists as well as gynecologists, since many conditions are difficult to recognize and well-established principles of skin disease treatment do not apply to the mucosa. This volume is exclusively devoted to the mucosal membrane and delivers a better understanding of this distinctive area. Subsequently to introductory chapters on the morphology and physiology of the mucosa, the topical treatment of impaired mucosal membranes is discussed. A third section covers the wide spectrum of consumer products applied on mucosal surfaces. Finally, the safety of products for mucosal membranes is reviewed.Providing an excellent summary and review of the latest findings and topical applications, this book will be of great value to physicians and clinicians in dermatology or gynecology, pharmacists, scientists and toxicologists who are involved in the development of products for mucosal membranes
Note: An excellent summary and review

Content: Completely new textile technologies have recently been developed with the goal of giving additional functionality to garments. Textiles have been improved to protect against UV radiation and toxic gases or to enhance breathability. In addition, they may have integrated sensors to diagnose medical conditions or may be equipped with carrier molecules to absorb substances from the skin and release therapeutic compounds. At the same time, the awareness of unwanted effects clothing may have on human health has increased. This volume familiarizes the dermatologist, allergologist and occupational physician with what he should know about textiles, and, on the other hand, the textile or chemical engineer with what he should know about the human skin. Further, it is divided into two parts the first of which discusses the functionality of textiles also in medicine, for instance in the prevention of skin infections or wound healing. The last part deals with allergic contact and irritant dermatitis and the risks of possible exposure to hazardous chemical residues in textiles. For the first time the knowledge of textile engineers and dermatologists has been brought together to stimulate a promising interchange
