Series Statement: Frontiers of neurology and neuroscience Vol. 24
Content: This publication summarizes the most recent advances in neurobiology, diagnostic approaches and therapeutics of the major dementing illnesses such as Alzheimer’s disease, frontotemporal dementia, Lewy body disease, and vascular dementia. In a succinct, practical and comprehensive manner, it provides an updated view of the disorders likely to be encountered in a daily practice. Each section is focused on a major form of dementia and is organized following the same scheme reviewing the pathophysiology of the disease, its diagnostic challenges, its characteristic neuroimaging features, therapeutic interventions and patient management issues. Avoiding an overspecialized approach, the book bridges the gap between clinical practice, advanced imaging, recent therapeutics and basic sciences. Thus, it serves as an excellent guide for mental health professionals working in the field of dementia as well as primary care physicians and students
Note: latest developments in diagnostic tools and imaging modalities, and therapeutic perspectives

Content: Dietary restriction uniquely and robustly increases maximum lifespan and greatly reduces age-related diseases in many species, including yeast, flies, nematodes, and mammals. To study mechanisms mediating the protective effects of dietary restriction, the National Institute of Aging convened a program involving several leading gerontological laboratories. Results from many of these, as well as from other leading research institutions in the field, are presented in this book. The first three papers address general molecular mechanisms, derived in part from recent DNA microarray studies, that may mediate protective effects of dietary restriction. The subsequent articles examine specific model systems, including flies, nematodes and non-human primates, that have provided exciting new information about these mechanisms. Finally, mechanisms of dietary restriction mediating protective effects against cancer and neurological diseases are discussed. In addition to gerontologists and geriatricians, many other medical and nonmedical professionals in the field will find a great wealth of information on possible interventions that may ameliorate age-related diseases

Content: One of the world’s major geriatric departments is housed in the Geneva University Hospital and has a 36-year-old history behind it. Some of its developments are set out in this book.Care programs such as geriatric concepts of care, community based support, convalescent beds, memory clinics, palliative medicine and care and practice of clinical ethics are discussed. Research has focussed on 15 years of comparative cross-sectional studies on aging in an urban and a rural area of Switzerland, prevalence of dementia in Geneva and Zurich, clinico-neuropathological correlation, fall prevention, hip fracture outcomes and the impact of nutrition on the recovery of hip fractures. Teaching activities include interactive pre-graduate teaching of geriatrics, patient-centered medicine, post ethics, teaching the teachers by the European Academy for Medicine of Aging. Networking by the Interfaculty Center of Gerontology, Swiss Foundation for Research on Healthy Aging and the WHO program on ‘Aging and Health’ are in progress. This book will be of interest to geriatricians, administrators, gerontological researchers and public health managers as it gives an insight into the setting up of a geriatric team and the implementation of geriatric programs

Content: One of the most demanding aspects regarding the endocrinology of aging is to determine the extent to which hormones change with age, independent of age-related pathologies, and the clinical significance of these changes. The emphasis of the present volume is on function, as it is of particular interest to many nonspecialists under what circumstances endocrine therapy may be useful in the elderly. For this purpose, leading investigators in their respective fields review the most important hormonal systems affected by aging. Furthermore, to facilitate the utility of the reviews particularly for nonspecialists, the book emphasizes the critical analysis of specific issues: The extent to which the hormones considered really do change with age, especially in humans; the physiological significance and the causes of these changes; and the prospects for treatment.Additionally, this volume also includes reviews on subjects such as cytokines, the sympathetic nervous system and leptin, which have not been traditionally considered in reviews of endocrine systems. However, while the concept of hormone replacement in the elderly is promising, as the chapters in the present volume indicate, much more research is necessary to determine under what circumstances such therapy is appropriate rather than counterproductive

Content: As the number of elderly people in human populations increases, the study of normal aging, age-related disorders, and enhanced longevity is taking on new urgency. Fundamental research will provide means of preventing and effectively treating the most debilitating and distressing aspects of advanced age. Considerations of aging in non-human life forms do not aim at life extension, but at an increasing appreciation for the biological role of the aging process in populations, in addition to developing a more comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms of aging. The present volume focuses on primate aging because human characteristics that evolved during their evolution are homologous with those of other primates. Therefore, the research on nonhuman primates will decidedly also contribute to our understanding of the process of human aging. The topics of this volume include brain aging and neurodegenerative diseases, social behavior, cognition and aging, skeletal aging in natural and captive conditions, and consequences of caloric restriction for life and health extension. The great variety of contributions aim at providing a survey of the relevant work in progress and increasing the understanding of normal and pathological aging and life-span enhancement in a variety of nonhuman primate species
Note: for a better understanding of normal and pathological aging

Content: Increased adiposity and decreased muscle mass contribute substantially to age-dependent disease and disability. In particular age-related increase in adiposity is quickly becoming a major threat to public health throughout the world. Although the hypothesis that age-related changes in body composition are due to lifestyle choices alone is well accepted, it is a vast oversimplification. This volume reflects the current knowledge in this rapidly developing field of research. The first part of the book discusses the extent to which increased adiposity contributes to age-related diseases and longevity. The 'obesity paradox', describing the protective role of overweight in decreasing mortality while increasing pathology, is covered in depth. Further chapters address specific aspects of the regulation of energy balance during aging, including the effects of changes in food intake. Finally the causes and consequences of loss of muscle mass and age-related osteoporosis are examined.A valuable help for physicians treating elderly patients, this book will also be of great interest to researchers studying energy balance, muscle physiology, bone disease, and other aspects of aging
