Sie erreichen das Segelschiff Thetis, das sie über die Ostsee nach London bringen soll. Die stürmische See und die gefährliche Überfahrt erinnern Wagner an eine Sage, die er nun Minna erzählt. Es ist die Sage vom Fliegenden Holländer, dem Kapitän eines Geisterschiffs. Dieser darf alle 7 Jahre an Land gehen und eine Frau suchen, die ihn liebt und ihn durch ewige Treue von seinem Fluch erlösen kann. Die Zeit auf See und die Sage inspirierten Wagner später zu seiner gleichnamigen Oper. Ausdrucksstarke Bilder, die durch die Farbgebung auch optisch die Rahmenhandlung von der Erzählung der Sage trennen, Trackangaben im Bilderbuch, die auf die entsprechenden Arien und Chöre auf der beiliegenden CD verweisen, und ein stimmiger Text ermöglichen ein erstes Kennenlernen von Wagners Oper, auch wenn die Texte der Arien und Chöre naturgemä ︢meist nicht verständlich sind.
