Content: Not wanting to lose, Yi-rang orchestrates a collapse in the middle of a relay race even though she's on the verge of giving up her dream of becoming an athlete. At the same time, Soo-min transfers in from Seoul and Cheol-soo, who dreams of becoming a scientist, come into her life. They are all immature but they are in the midst of youthful aspiration. With this warm-hearted animation, Han Hye-jin and An Jae-hoon encourage Yi-rang's dreams and portray the fantasy and flutter of adolescence through encounters with good people. Set in the '80s and '90s, an old umbrella and a railroad crossing the downtown in the film is the stuff that reminds us of our lost past, evoking a reminiscence in the audience of that which is vanished. Ebenso brutaler wie komplexer Thriller, dessen Gewaltszenen von ausgesuchter Grausamkeit zeugen und die zusammen mit der stark komprimierten Handlung voller Brüche und Löcher dazu dienen, den Zuschauer auf allen Ebenen, vor allem auch emotional, zu manipulieren. Die zutiefst skeptische Meditation auf filmsprachlich hohem Niveau sinnt auf radikale Weise über Rache und Selbstmord als extreme Handlungsalternativen nach, kann insgesamt aber den Bannkreis des Fatalismus nicht durchbrechen. Content: This collection includes popular cartoonist Shin Dong Hun's famous animated films "A Story of Hong Gil Dong" and the sequel "Hopi and Chadol Bawi". Published in 1967, "A Story of Hong Gil Dong" is Korea's first feature-length animation based on his brother Shin Dong Woo's serial comic "The Legend of Hong Gil Dong". Hong Gil Dong is a Joseon folk hero who stole from the rich to feed the poor. To control him, the government made him the War Minister. To create a better world, Hong sets forth to the foreign nation of Yuldo and becomes the king. In the same year, Shin Dong Hun launched the follow-up "Hopi and Chadol Bawi", which features two characters from "A Story of Hong Gil Dong" as the protagonists. Screened at the Teheran Children's Film Festival in Iran and released in Thailand, "Hopi and Chadol Bawi" was the first Korean animated film to be shown overseas. The story revolves around sword master Hopi and Chadolbawi who collaborate to fight against corrupt officials and robbers. [www.yesasia.com]

Content: "A Story of Hong Gil-dong" was an important part of South Korean cinema history but unfortunately was forgotten for a 40 year period as the original Korean film prints were lost and only soundtrack elements survived. It was in 2008 that two film prints were discovered in Japan - one in Kobe and one in Tokyo. They were both 16mm prints that were dubbed in Japanese and added Japanese credit sequences. The Japanese print was resynched to the Korean language soundtrack and a new 35mm element was created. The new master was restored in 2K and now has been given new life by the Korean Film Archive for future generations to see the long lost film. [www.dvdcompare.net]

Content: Young-Chan has been deaf and blind since childhood. As he puts it himself, "In the beginning there was darkness and silence, and the darkness and silence were with god. And when I arrived, they came to me." Young-Chan has no idea how to participate in the world until he meets Soon-Ho, who also has a physical handicap. He marries her and learns to communicate with the outside world through her. By softly tapping each other's finger, they can understand one another; it is sometimes as if they are tenderly playing a piano. This documentary follows the couple in the same gentle tempo as Young-Chan moves through his life. We see them replacing a lightbulb together, receiving friends, working on a theater piece, reading a book, and gliding on a sleigh. These everyday scenes are accompanied by a poetic voice-over by Young-Chan, in which he reflects on his existence without sight and hearing. He feels like an astronaut, but that doesn't mean he is without a sense of beauty in the world. Content: Im ersten Teil seiner Rache-Trilogie entwirft der Koreaner Park Chan Woo ein zermürbendes Szenario: Ein taubstummer, elternloser Mann hat Mühe, sich und seine kranke Schwester zu ernähren, die ohne neue Niere nicht mehr lange leben wird. Da der Weg zu einer Spenderniere mühsam ist, lässt sich das Leid höchstens über den illegalen Organmarkt abkürzen. Doch die Händler spielen falsch, der Mann erwacht ohne Geld, Niere und die Hoffnung auf Rettung seiner Schwester. Das Unglücksszenario spitzt sich immer weiter zu, bis sich der Mann rächt. Angesichts der nicht enden wollenden Schicksalsschläge bleibt, trotz des eindrücklichen Spiel der Darsteller und des neorealistischen Inszenierungswillens des Regisseurs, ein berechnender Geschmack nach Kunstgewerbe, den man bei "Old Boy", dem zweiten Teil der "Trilogie", nicht mehr spürt. Möglicherweise ist "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance" nur eine Fingerübung auf dem Weg zum Opus magnum: dem Abschluss der Trilogie mit "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance" (2005). [Film-Dienst]
