Rezension(4): "RT Book Reviews (4 1/2 stars) Top Pick!:Emotional depth, appealing characters, strong storylines and sexual tension are what make Kleypas' novels reader favorites...but what will truly captivate them is watching the characters grow as love makes them the best they can be. A lovely, unforgettable story." Rezension(5): "〈a href=http://www.kirkusreviews.com target=blank〉〈img src=https://images.contentreserve.com/kirkus_logo.png alt=Kirkus border=0 /〉〈/a〉: April 1, 2016 A Welsh grocer's son has built a retail empire in London, but an infatuation with the daughter of an earl threatens his self-control. When the protagonists of a romance novel cement their engagement within the first three chapters, readers can look forward to hundreds of pages of obstacles and miscommunications before the knot is tied. The second book in Kleypas' The Ravenels series (Cold-Hearted Rake, 2015) is no different, with dark secrets, troublesome relatives, and misadventures keeping Lady Helen Ravenel and Rhys Winterborne apart. But Kleypas has taken a tired trope and made it irresistible, with glittering prose and characters the reader longs to befriend. When the clumsy Welsh tycoon kisses his fiancee for the first time, she takes to her bed with a migraine. Her concerned family tells Rhys the engagement must be broken off. But Lady Helen refuses to let him go, courting scandal by coming to see him in the offices above his department store. Rhys observes her shabby clothing and assumes she's rekindling their engagement because her family needs money, but Helen convinces him that though her family had become impoverished, the recent discovery of minerals on their estate has fixed their financial problems. He seizes the chance to compromise her virtue so her family won't be able to prevent the match, and Lady Helen undertakes to convince her family that she really does want to marry him. As the novel progresses, layers of social polish are stripped away to reveal that both Rhys and Helen have been painfully lonely their entire lives, and they must give up other loyalties in order to be true to each other. The novel's parade of complicated characters is set against a compelling backdrop of Victorian England, with all the fashion and technological changes of the era. Kleypas is a masterful writer, and her latest offering will be welcomed by fans old and new. COPYRIGHT(2016) Kirkus Reviews, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. Yet convincing Rhys is only the beginning. There's her family, as well. A wealthy businessman with rough Welsh roots and a gently bred noblewoman who finally takes charge of her life find love and acceptance despite their considerable differences--and a devastating secret. This adventure sweeps its characters from elegant drawing rooms to garbage-strewn slums and provides a callous, delightfully smarmy villain to hate. VERDICT Picking up where Cold-Hearted Rake leaves off, this engaging tale brings class bias, illegitimacy, and assorted social issues of the Victorian era into sharp focus and seamlessly continues the series while hinting at escapades to come. Devon Ravenel inherits an earldom, a rotting estate, a houseful of female relations, and a mess of debt when his cousin is thrown from a horse and killed. Devon initially wishes to sell the property and get back to his bachelor ways, but his passion for his cousin’s widow and his dedication to rescuing the estate both sneak up on him. That passion, however, takes an ugly turn, with many of the more physical scenes pushing the boundaries of consent. At times the story feels more like a case of Stockholm syndrome than a blossoming romance, souring the enjoyability of an otherwise well-crafted story. Agent: Mel Berger, William Morris Endeavor. "

Garrett, a constable’s daughter, nonetheless earned a degree from the Sorbonne and, at age 28, has a state-of-the-art surgery plus a side gig subsidized by tycoon Rhys Winterborne (familiar from 2016’s Marrying Winterborne ). Into this frankly unbelievable life slouches Ethan Ransom, a kind of Victorian James Bond who spends Tuesdays shadowing Garrett on neighborhood rounds. This makes him conveniently available to rescue her from inevitable harassers. He agrees to tutor her in street-fighting skills, and they scarcely resist the ensuing onslaught of lust. Ethan is a double agent engaged in taking down his corrupt government boss, and Garrett doesn’t know the risks she’s taking by getting involved with him. There’s a sense that Garrett has been cast as a doctor to excuse a liberal salting of research nuggets, and Ethan’s Kama Sutra –derived erotic skills are annoyingly orientalist. Such details do give an uncommon flavor to a familiar suspense plot, and the anatomical dialogue, while expected, is still good for a chuckle, but there’s little here for anyone other than series fans. Even walking the precarious streets of Clerkenwell doesn't faze her--until she is accosted by a trio of drunken soldiers. Luckily, Ethan Ransom, a former police officer, now a government operative, and Garrett's self-appointed guardian, steps in to help. Naturally, Garrett is annoyed, but when Ethan offers to give her a few self-defense lessons, she grudgingly agrees, setting the stage for a romance that soon becomes more than a fling and dangerous in ways she'd never imagined. A fearless heroine and an Irish hero confront traitors, assassins, and a diabolical government plot--as well as each other--in a multilayered story that skillfully interweaves gripping suspense with bitter resentments and tangled family dynamics. VERDICT Witty, often hilarious, and delightfully passionate, this compelling, thrill-laced Victorian romance is another superb series entry. Kleypas ( Devil in Spring ) lives in Washington State. Lady Cassandra Ravenel has turned down many proposals, holding out for real feeling. That doesn’t stop railway magnate Tom Severin from asking for her hand within moments of meeting her. Though she ignores his proposal, the shrewd businessman fancies her from just a glance and sees winning her as a thrilling challenge. His pursuit leads the pair to grow close. But when Tom starts to feel more than lust, he abruptly ends their budding friendship to avoid the liability he feels his emotions pose on his cold, calculated life, leaving a smitten Cassandra confused and hurt. They continue to run into each other, and their physical and mental attraction proves too strong to ignore. When one of Cassandra’s scorned suitors slanders her reputation, Tom is determined to protect her. Kleypas modeled her on Elizabeth Garrett Anderson, who in 1865 became the first Englishwoman to qualify as a doctor. Garrett lives with her father above her busy office, and although her friendship with the Ravenels grants her proximity to wealth and nobility, she is fulfilled in her career and content in her life. At age 28, she may be on the shelf, but it happens to be a very interesting shelf. Little does the good doctor realize that in a chance encounter two years prior, her brilliance and beauty captivated secret government agent Ethan Ransom. Ransom, a by-blow of the late Earl of Ravenel, was raised by a prison guard. Rejecting his biological connections, he prefers a solitary, anonymous life, the better to exercise the espionage skills he gained under the tutelage of England's most powerful spymaster. Kleypas' depiction of the city Garrett and Ransom adore is one of the novel's delights: It was a mean, big-bellied, prosperous city, shod in brick and iron, wearing a thick overcoat of factory smoke, carrying a million secrets in its pockets. A terrorism subplot gives Ransom strong reason to stay away from Garrett, who is game for a fling but concerned about her reputation, precarious as it already is given her controversial line of work. While Ransom's workplace issues never quite gel, vivid romantic encounters in nooks of London not often featured in this subgenre--a fencing club, a raucous street party, a darkened lab--make this a love story to savor.Another winner in Kleypas' Ravenels series, with elegant prose, a fascinating heroine, and a Victorian London constructed with compelling historical detail. " Rezension(6): "〈a href=http://www.publishersweekly.com target=blank〉〈img src=https://images.contentreserve.com/pw_logo.png alt=Publisher's Weekly border=0 /〉〈/a〉: February 5, 2018 Kleypas sets the implausible fairy tale of Garrett Gibson, the only woman doctor in 1876 England, in working-class Clerkenwell, but this sanitized version of London has the squeaky-clean artifice of a toothpaste commercial. Content: " Although beautiful young widow Phoebe, Lady Clare, has never met West Ravenel, she knows one thing for certain: he's a mean, rotten bully. Back in boarding school, he made her late husband's life a misery, and she'll never forgive him for it. But when Phoebe attends a family wedding, she encounters a dashing and impossibly charming stranger who sends a fire-and-ice jolt of attraction through her. And then he introduces himself...as none other than West Ravenel. West is a man with a tarnished past. No apologies, no excuses. However, from the moment he meets Phoebe, West is consumed by irresistible desire...not to mention the bitter awareness that a woman like her is far out of his reach. What West doesn't bargain on is that Phoebe is no straitlaced aristocratic lady. She's the daughter of a strong-willed wallflower who long ago eloped with Sebastian, Lord St. Vincent the most devilishly wicked rake in England. Before long, Phoebe sets out to seduce the man who has awakened her fiery nature and shown her unimaginable pleasure. Will their overwhelming passion be enough to overcome the obstacles of the past? Only the devil's daughter knows..."

It's often said that you can never go wrong with a Lisa Kleypas book, and Devil's Daughter does much to maintain that aphorism." Rezension(9): "〈a href=http://www.kirkusreviews.com target=blank〉〈img src=https://images.contentreserve.com/kirkus_logo.png alt=Kirkus border=0 /〉〈/a〉: February 1, 2019 The fifth in Kleypas' popular Ravenels series puts a young flame-haired widow in the path of her late husband's tormenter. But neither is what they seem. When Phoebe, Lady Clare, married her chronically ill childhood sweetheart, Henry, she vowed to take care of him. Eventually, Henry succumbed to his wasting disease, leaving her to raise two young sons. While managing her grief and supporting her children, Phoebe is content to allow Henry's cousin, Edward Larson, to run the Clare estate in Essex. But a trip to her younger brother's wedding at the sprawling Eversby Priory introduces Phoebe to estate manager Weston Ravenel, who sparks her interest in new farming technologies, and in his tall, brawny physique and piercing dark blue eyes. Alas, West had tormented sickly Henry in boarding school, earning him Phoebe's intense dislike. West is something unusual in the genre: a self-reformed rake. When carousing and pleasure-seeking lost their charm, he left London and began a new life of honest hard work on his brother's estate. Phoebe, the daughter of a duke and the wealthy mother of the heir to a viscountcy, is out of his league. Phoebe and West are seated together at a lavish wedding dinner, an exquisite, transporting scene of small intimacies spanning two chapters in which Kleypas (Hello Stranger, 2018, etc.) is at the top of her game. Unlike Henry, West is both the storm and the shelter,he kissed like a man who had lived too fast, learned too late, and had finally found the thing he wanted. Readers will enjoy revisiting beloved characters from both the Wallflowers series and from earlier installments of the Ravenels, although West's protestations of low worth ring hollow when surrounded by happily married friends and relatives with similarly debauched pasts.A widow emerges from mourning with the help of a reformed rake in a truly romantic tale that stands well on its own.
