International gewinnt die Debatte über eine Public-Health-Ethik an Fahrt. Inhaltlich knüpft sie kritisch an die Bioethik an. Die Debatte über Public-Health-Ethik ist zugleich eine Auseinandersetzung über das angemessene Selbstverständnis von Public Health, deren Aufgaben, Maßstäbe und Ziele. In Deutschland besteht ein hoher Anschlussbedarf an diesem Diskurs. Die im deutschsprachigen Raum vorhandenen Erfahrungen der Sozialmedizin, Sozialhygiene und auch der Medizinethik können wertvolle Beiträge liefern, wenn sie aus ethischer Perspektive aufgearbeitet werden. Derzeit nimmt die deutschsprachige Public-Health-Gemeinschaft das Thema Ethik aber kaum war. Die Gründe dafür sind bislang nicht expliziert. Der angloamerikanische Diskurs ist dem deutschen deutlich voraus. Dennnoch sollten die Vorgaben nicht einfach übertragen werden, da in Mitteleuropa andere Traditionen und Strukturen in Wissenschaft und Praxis vorhanden sind. Die Grundbegriffe und Paradigmen einer Public-Health-Ethik sollten Gegenstand des Diskurses sein. Da es hierbei um das Selbstverständnis von Public Health geht, ist die Teilnahme an diesem Diskurs von großem Gewicht.
