Die Hälfte des Himmels gehört einem chinesischen Sprichwort zufolge den Frauen. Doch nirgends ist dies Realität. Die in diesem Buch dokumentierten Einzelschicksale sind erschütternd und machen Mut zugleich. Denn immer mehr Frauen schaffen es, nachdem sie unermessliches Leid erfahren haben, sich zu befreien - mit tatkräftiger Hilfe von außen. Auch dazu möchte dieses Buch uns privilegierte Westler/innen aufrufen: humanitäre Projekte zugunsten von Frauen zu unterstützen. Diese Unterstützung - auch das stellen die Autoren klar - muss jedoch ohne Bevormundung und mit Respekt vor der Selbstbestimmung der Frauen geschehen. Viele dieser Frauen aus südlichen Ländern leisten trotz aller Schwierigkeiten Erstaunliches. Mit ihren Projekten sind sie "die wirkungsvollsten Motoren der Veränderung."
