Abstract: Born in Tønder, Denmark, Stephan Kenckel (1661–1732) had a short career in schoolteaching before becoming, in 1697, a customs master based in the provincial port town of Helsingør. Remarkably, Kenckel was a major collector both of musical instruments and of printed and manuscript music. We know this, since his music and instruments were put up for public auction after his death. The printed sale catalogue, the relevant contents of which are listed, described, and analysed, also includes, in the example studied, the handwritten names of purchasers and the prices they paid. The range of instruments—familiar and exotic, antiquated and newfangled-owned by Kenckel and the breadth of his musical repertory, which suggests the existence of a thriving collegium musicum active in Helsingør, testify to a higher state of musical development in early-18th-century Denmark than has been generally recognized.

Abstract: The rarity of thirteenth-century manuscript sources containing representative examples from both musical and theoretical traditions is a notorious disadvantage to any study of the polyphony of the ars antiqua. Such a source is the earliest recension of Lambertus's Tractatus de musica , now housed in the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris under the shelf number 11266, which transmits seven thirteenth-century double motets. However, one ought not simply to assume that the musical compositions illustrate the practice of the treatise, as both Coussemaker (1865, 169ff) and Ludwig (1910, 1/2, 590ff) did. Even since then, most critics have followed the assumptions of these two authors (Gennrich 1957, XLII; Anderson 1971, 39; Norwood 1978, 80; Baltzer 1980). An examination of the data on which these hypotheses are based may lead to a re-assessment of the relationship between music and theory in this manuscript and may suggest alternative interpretations.

Abstract: Of the twenty or so music manuscripts from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries preserved in Hereford Cathedral Library, no fewer than six contain sections devoted to keyboard music — a remarkably high proportion. Although all six contain other music too, this article will concentrate on the keyboard music; and, since the sources are very little known and virtually unrecorded in print, a description and inventory of all the keyboard music will be given here. (A complete inventory of all the manuscripts will eventually be published under the auspices of the Répertoire international des sources musicales (RISM) .) The six manuscripts can be divided chronologically into three groups: two from around 1700, two from around 1720 and two from around the 1760s.

Abstract: Studies of the Royal Institution have focused on science, as the term was defined from about the 1840s onwards, and on the institutionalization of science so defined. They exhibit a particular assumption that, until recent years, has dominated the historiography of science and that still is apparent in the latest study of the Royal Institution by Morris Berman (1978). Berman's aim is to demonstrate ‘the process by which technical reason became (as Michel Foucault would say) the prose of our world’ (p. xxv). Thus, according to Berman, what the chemist, Humphry Davy, stood for ‘ultimately made a greater difference for the history of science than what he accomplished with the voltaic pile, for he paved the way for a society in which the “social construction of reality” proceeded along scientific lines’ (p. xxv).

Abstract: The treatise entitled The Airt of Musick Collecit out of all Ancient Doctoris of Musick , British Library Additional MS 4911, known as 'Scottish Anonymous’, has long been of interest to scholars of faburden and related subjects. The importance of its evidence has been difficult to assess, however, since key questions remain unanswered, such as of what establishment this manuscript represents the musical practices and over what time-period. The matter is further clouded by the circulation of obviously erroneous dates, the background to which is discussed by Judson Maynard in his dissertation on this manuscript.
