Content: Commercial esthetics or art? Interdisciplinary perspectives on the interaction of poetry-like structure and the esthetics of advertisement, the art of poetry and persuasion, literature in advertisement and advertisement in literature!

Series Statement: Bloomsbury classics in linguistics
Content: "Examining the ways in which the media represents language-related issues and how it shapes and constructs what people think language is, this book offers a multilingual survey of the construction of language in and by the media. Tackling the big issues of identity, gender, youth, citizenship, politics and ideology across a range of mediums including television, radio, newspapers, magazines and the internet, Language in the Media brings together an international team of experts to examine how the media gives language distinctive forms and values. This is an essential text for students and researchers of sociolinguistics or language and communication. At a time when trust in the mainstream media is at an all-time low and world leaders are using new media to deride so called 'fake news', this classic text offers insight and critical analysis into the key issues surrounding the relationship between language, the media and its audience." --Bloomsbury Publishing

Series Statement: Bloomsbury advances in translation
Content: "While the sociology of literary translation is by now well-established, and even flourishing, the same cannot be said specifically for the sociology of poetry translation. This volume, the first to address poetry translation using a variety of sociological and socio-political approaches, showcases poetry translation looked at from the distinctive perspectives offered by theorists like Pierre Bourdieu and Niklas Luhmann. Discussing poetry translated from and/or into a variety of languages, such as Catalan, Czech, English, Irish, Italian, Russian, Slovakian, Spanish, Swahili, Swedish, and Ukrainian, Sociologies of Poetry Translation addresses poetry translation from sociological perspectives in order to catalyse new methods of investigating poetry translation and features new research on how ideological stances and historical movements affect it. Making the case for a move from the singular 'sociology of poetry translation' to the pluralist 'sociologies', this book accounts for the rich variety of approaches that are currently emerging to deal with poetry translation."--Bloomsbury Publishing

Content: "This book approaches persuasion in public discourse as a rhetorical phenomenon that enables the persuader to appeal to the addressee's intellectual and emotional capacities in a competing public environment. The aim is to investigate persuasive strategies from the overlapping perspectives of cognitive and functional linguistics. Both qualitative and quantitative analyses of authentic data (including English, Czech, Spanish, Slovene, Russian, and Hungarian) are grounded in the frameworks of functional grammar, facework and rapport management, classical rhetoric studies and multimodal discourse analysis and are linked to the constructs of (re)framing, conceptual metaphor and blending, mental space and viewpoint. In addition to traditional genres such as political speeches, news reporting, and advertising, the book also studies texts that examine book reviews, medieval medical recipes, public complaints or anonymous viral videos. Apart from discourse analysts, pragmaticians and cognitive linguists, the intended readership includes cognitive musicologists, semioticians, historical linguists or scholars of neighbouring disciplines"...

Series Statement: Die babylonisch-assyrische Medizin in Texten und Untersuchungen Band 9
Content: The reconstruction of ancient Mesopotamian medical, ritual and omen compendia and their complex history is still characterised by many difficulties, debates and gaps due to fragmentary or unpublished evidence. This book offers the first complete edition of the Assur Medical Catalogue, an 8th or 7th century BCE list of therapeutic texts, which forms a core witness for the serialisation of medical compendia in the 1st millennium BCE. The volume presents detailed analyses of this and several other related catalogues of omen series and rituals, constituting the corpora of divination and healing disciplines. The contributions discuss links between catalogues and textual sources, providing new insights into the development of compendia between serialization, standardization and diversity of local traditions. Though its a novel corpus-based approach, this volume revolutionizes the current understanding of Mesopotamian medical texts and the healing disciplines of "conjurer" and "physician". The research presented here allows one to identify core text corpora for these disciplines, as well as areas of exchange and borrowings between them

Content: Tweets, text messages, Facebook status updates, or microblog entries: the process of announcing news and sharing knowledge seems to be getting shorter and shorter. This volume relates the current trend of abbreviation to its antecedents, showing that the use of brevity existed long before the digital age. The career of the short form is closely connected to the cultural achievements of the 17th century, and skyrocketed in the run up to the formation of professional media networks in the 19th century. Since then, anecdotes, case studies, brief messages, the miscellaneous, headlines, and tidbits from around the world have formed essential elements of the organization and communication of modern forms of knowledge

Content: Over the last years, kollektiv orangotango has gathered more than 40 counter-cartographies from all over the world. As the first of its kind, this collection shows how maps are created and transformed as part of political struggles, for critical research, or in art and education: from indigenous struggles in the Amazon to the anti-eviction movement in San Francisco, from defending commons in Mexico to mapping refugee camps with balloons in Lebanon, from slums in Nairobi to squats in Berlin, from supporting communities in the Philippines to accusing sexual harassment in Cairo. This Is Not an Atlas seeks to inspire, to document the underrepresented, and to be a useful companion for those seeking to become counter-cartographers themselves.

Content: Since Edward Said’s foundational work, Orientalism has been singled out for critique as the quintessential example of Western intellectuals’ collaboration with oppression. Controversies over the imbrications of knowledge and power and the complicity of Orientalism in the larger project of colonialism have been waged among generations of scholars. But has Orientalism come to stand in for all of the sins of European modernity, at the cost of neglecting the complicity of the rest of the academic disciplines? In this landmark theoretical investigation, Wael B. Hallaq reevaluates and deepens the critique of Orientalism in order to deploy it for rethinking the foundations of the modern project. Refusing to isolate or scapegoat Orientalism, Restating Orientalism extends the critique to other fields, from law, philosophy, and scientific inquiry to core ideas of academic thought such as sovereignty and the self. Hallaq traces their involvement in colonialism, mass annihilation, and systematic destruction of the natural world, interrogating and historicizing the set of causes that permitted modernity to wed knowledge to power. Restating Orientalism offers a bold rethinking of the theory of the author, the concept of sovereignty, and the place of the secular Western self in the modern project, reopening the problem of power and knowledge to an ethical critique and ultimately theorizing an exit from modernity’s predicaments. A remarkably ambitious attempt to overturn the foundations of a wide range of academic disciplines while also drawing on the best they have to offer, Restating Orientalism exposes the depth of academia’s lethal complicity in modern forms of capitalism, colonialism, and hegemonic power.

Content: Introduction -- Putting Orientalism in its place -- Knowledge, power, and colonial sovereignty -- The subversive author -- Epistemic sovereignty and structural genocide -- Refashioning Orientalism, refashioning the subject
Content: "Edward Said's Orientalism not only inaugurated a new and highly controversial arena of discourse but also set the terms of debate around knowledge, power, and imperialism since 1978, when the book first appeared. The substance of discussions remains extensively political, limited to the so-called problem of knowledge and power and the complicity of Orientalism in the larger project of colonialism. One of the many critiques was that Said was too sweeping in his condemnation of Orientalists, leaving no analytical space for distinguishing degrees of difference between one scholar and another. Thus any scholar who depicts Islam negatively or too positively is an Orientalist, the former a bigot of some sort and the latter an exoticizer. Restating Orientalism offers an alternative account that accepts and transcends political thought and positioning while avoiding the totalization of authorial condemnation in Said's narrative. Hallaq reopens the problem of power and knowledge to an ethical critique, asking such questions as: What makes certain forms of knowledge useful to power, and what kind of cultural configurations exist in the world in which knowledge and power have virtually no relationship with each other? Refusing to isolate or scapegoat Orientalism, the book extends the critique to other academic fields, tracing their involvement in colonialism and genocide to a seventeenth- and eighteenth- century structure of thought whose most salient characteristic was a type of domination anchored in sovereignty over life and death. Orientalism, Hallaq argues, is no more an exception to liberal and modern forms of knowledge than genocide in general was an exception in modernity, but rather is the truest representation of modern sovereign capabilities"--

Content: The creation of new lexical units and patterns has been studied in different research frameworks, focusing on either system-internal or system-external aspects, from which no comprehensive view has emerged. The volume aims to fill this gap by studying dynamic processes in the lexicon - understood in a wide sense as not being necessarily limited to the word level - by bringing together approaches directed to morphological productivity as well as approaches analyzing general types of lexical innovation and the role of discourse-related factors. The papers deal with ongoing changes as well as with historical processes of change in different languages and reflect on patterns and specific subtypes of lexical innovation as well as on their external conditions and the speakers' motivations for innovating. Moreover, the diffusion and conventionalization of innovations will be addressed. In this way, the volume contributes to understanding the complex interplay of structural, cognitive and functional factors in the lexicon as a highly dynamic domain

Series Statement: Oxford handbooks in linguistics
Content: This volume offers a thorough, systematic, and crosslinguistic account of evidentiality, the linguistic encoding of the source of information on which a statement is based. In some languages, the speaker always has to specify this source - for example whether they saw the event, heard it, inferred it based on visual evidence or common sense, or was told about it by someone else. While not all languages have obligatory marking of this type, every language has ways of referring to information source and associated epistemological meanings. The continuum of epistemological expressions covers a range of devices from the lexical means in familiar European languages and in many languages of Aboriginal Australia to the highly grammaticalized systems in Amazonia or North America. In this handbook, experts from a variety of fields explore topics such as the relationship between evidentials and epistemic modality, contact-induced changes in evidential systems, the acquisition of evidentials, and formal semantic theories of evidentiality. The book also contains detailed case studies of evidentiality in language families across the world, including Algonquian, Korean, Nakh-Dagestanian, Nambikwara, Turkic, Uralic, and Uto-Aztecan.
